Watch: 'Ex-Gay' Proponent Dr. George Rekers Confronted About Suicide of 'Sissy Boy' He Treated

Rekers

In part two of AC360's look at therapy pushed by Dr. George Rekers meant to "cure" boys of their effeminate ways, CNN's team confronts Rekers about the suicide of Kirk Murphy.

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

Part 1 of the AC360 special, if you missed it, is HERE.

As you may recall, the State of Florida spent hundreds of thousands of dollars hiring Dr. George Rekers as its star witness in the case against adoption by gays in Florida.

Florida's hiring of Rekers by Attorney General Bill McCollum made headlines after Rekers, who built his career out of this damaging "ex-gay" therapy, was discovered returning from vacation in Florida with a rent boy he had brought with him.

Watch: How 'Anti-Sissy' Therapy Destroyed a Man and His Family

Sissyboy

Here's the first part of AC360's look into the damaging "anti-sissy" treatment pushed by "ex-gay" proponent Dr. George Alan Rekers that I previewed yesterday:

"In 1970, a five-year-old boy named Kirk Murphy was subjected to an ex-gay experiment. Under the care of Dr Ivor Lovaas and George Rekers, then a doctoral student, of UCLA, he underwent therapy to eliminate supposed effeminate behaviors. In 1974, Lovaas and Rekers jointly published a paper about the boy they renamed "Kraig," heralding his treatment for "childhood cross-gender problems" a success and claiming he had been transformed from a gender-confused homosexual-in-waiting to a healthy, heterosexual young man. On the back of this study, Rekers built a career as an anti-gay activist and a supposed expert in childhood sexual development. He co-founded the Family Research Council and championed reparative therapy to turn gay men straight. In 2003, Kirk, aged 38 years old and gay, committed suicide."

Watch: How 'Anti-Sissy' Therapy Destroyed a Man and His Family

Tonight, an AC360 special report looks at the "experimental therapy" designed to make effeminate boys more masculine, a treatment that was promoted by Dr. George Alan Rekers, the "ex-gay" proponent who was caught last year returning from a vacation in Florida with a male hustler. Rekers built a career out of this therapy, ruining lives in the process.

Kirk One of those lives was Kirk Murphy. Murphy who committed suicide at the age of 38 after years of therapy basically stole his soul.

Rekers documented his therapy using the pseudonym 'Kraig' for Kirk. Jim Burroway of the blog Box Turtle Bulletin did a major investigation on what happened to Kraig/Kirk:

"In this original BTB investigation, we speak with his family and friend who knew the real “Kraig” to uncover the truth behind Reker’s greatest success story. Their stories reveals the tragedy of a terrible experiment on a very young boy which would haunt him for the rest of his life. It is not only an indictment of a man who built his anti-gay career on Kirk’s suffering, but a rebuke to others — those in the mental health profession then and in the contemporary ex-gay movement today — who would place their careers and agendas ahead of the well-being of this young boy and countless others like him."

Watch: Florida AG Bill McCollum Doesn't Like Gay Adoption, Says He Hired Rekers Because Other 'Experts' are Afraid to Testify

Mccollum

In a new interview with Sun-Sentinel Broward Politics, Florida gubernatorial candidate Attorney General Bill McCollum defends the hiring of "ex-gay" fraud George Alan Rekers. Rekers, you may recall, was the state's only witness in its case defending Florida's ban on gay adoption, and was caught in late April returning from a vacation with a "rent boy".

Here, McCollum explains that Rekers was not an "expert" but was a "scholar" hired because he had "the expertise to admit documents." McCollum claims that it was difficult to find other experts on gay adoption because people are afraid to speak out against gays because of fear of discrimination due to the political climate on college campuses.

Rekers was paid more than $120,000 in taxpayer money for his "expert" defense.

McCollum also discusses his "political, personal view" on gay adoption. Basically, he's a bigot:

"I don't believe that the gay family model is good for the kids."

In related news, a University of Virginia study was released this week saying just the opposite:

"In a sample of 106 adoptive children living in different parts of the United States, youngsters were developing well regardless of whether they were living with lesbian, gay or heterosexual parenting couples. The study found that whether or not adoptive children were developing in positive ways was unrelated to the sexual orientation of their adoptive parents. The finding appears in the August issue of the journal Applied Developmental Science. "We found that children adopted by lesbian and gay couples are thriving," said U.Va. psychology professor Charlotte J. Patterson, who led the study. "Our results provide no justification for denying lesbian or gay prospective adoptive parents the opportunity to adopt children. With thousands of children in need of permanent homes in the United States alone, our findings suggest that outreach to lesbian and gay prospective adoptive parents might benefit children who are in need."

Emails Show Florida AG Bill McCollum Pushed to Hire George Rekers Against Advice of His Own Staff

Newly-released records show that Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum pushed to hire Christian "ex-gay" activist (and employer of rent boys) George Alan Rekers to defend the state's ban on gay adoption even after his own attorneys recommended against it.

The Herald Tribune reports: Mccollum

"The hiring of a now-disgraced psychologist to defend Florida's ban on gay adoption was done over the objections of the main attorney defending the case for the state, according to records made public Thursday...Nevertheless, Attorney General Bill McCollum pushed for the hiring of the psychologist George Rekers, who was at the time a leading advocate for conservative social issues."

For some reason, McCollum really wanted to get in bed with Rekers:

"The e-mails released Thursday show that an attorney in McCollum's own office warned against hiring Rekers, whose testimony had been deemed suspect in an earlier Arkansas lawsuit that challenged a ban on placing foster children in homes with gay parents. Assistant Attorney General Valerie Martin wrote in a July 2007 e-mail that after talking to Arkansas officials and reviewing the background of the former University of South Carolina professor that she would 'recommend NOT using him.' E-mails also show that during a conference call Martin -- who said the state considered more than 30 possible expert witnesses -- was ordered to hire Rekers 'against my strong cautions.'"

This news contradicts McCollum's statement in a July 2007 letter to Florida's Department of Children and Families (DCF) in which he said that his staff strongly recommended hiring Rekers.

The state of Florida ended up paying more than $120,000 to an "ex-gay" hypocrite who hires rent boys to defend the state's ban on gay adoption.

McCollum is running for governor of Florida.
