George 'Rentboy' Rekers Resigns from 'Ex-Gay' Group NARTH

George "rentboy" Rekers has resigned from the Board of the "ex-gay" group National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH).

Via Talking Points Memo:

Rekers "NARTH vice president of operations David Pruden tells TPMmuckraker that Rekers first offered his resignation last Thursday, and officially resigned today. NARTH is a group that promotes the idea that homosexuality can, and should, be cured. Pruden also denied a report in the Miami New Times that NARTH had been involved in helping Rekers respond to the media. 'NARTH has never had any role in advising Dr. Rekers except to suggest that if he is innocent he needs to get a good lawyer,' Pruden said in an email. 'He has friends who are members of NARTH and they are free to talk with, advise, and needless to say, they are free to help him in any way they might select.' ...  'NARTH as an organization has taken no official role in this other than asking him to explain to us what has happened and in accepting his resignation,' he said."

Rekers

Brandon Thorp and Penn Bullock are the Miami New Times journalists who exposed "ex-gay" Christian leader George Rekers as he returned from his vacation with "rent boy" Lucien.

And they're a couple.

The South Florida Gay News:

Thorp and Bullock went about the task of writing their story methodically. First, it was not Roman that tipped them off to the lead the young man was in Europe with Rekers. Instead, it was a friend of Roman’s, who was an ‘authorized user’ of his e-mail account. Apparently, while reviewing Roman’s contacts, he came upon the escort’s famous client, and contacted his friend, Bullock. His goal was to expose Rekers, a married man, for hiring a male escort.

Bullock and Thorp immediately recognized the significance of their quarry, and the potentially explosive nature of the story. They arranged to secretly be at the airport with a camera when Rekers arrived, and snapped the now famous photos of Rekers standing over his luggage, with Roman in the background.

Thorp and Bullock say that the aftermath of the story has been "incredibly stressful" given the "tumultuous effect on the people we wrote about."

Florida AG Bill McCollum Personally Urged State to Hire Rekers

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum gave a statement to the Miami Herald's Naked Politics that seemed to suggest he was unaware of George Rekers damaging and dangerous "ex-gay" background when he was hired to defend the state's ban on gay adoption (and paid $120K for it).

Said McCollum to Naked PoliticsMccollum

"I will not do it again. I think our team’s done what it should do. We’ve been defending the constitution of the state and we’ve been representing the Department of Children and Families, who hired him and paid him and needed expert witnesses and he was available and credentialed. I wouldn’t do it again if I knew what I know today but I didn't know that then and neither did anybody else."

Today, however, the Florida Tribune reports that McCollum personally lobbied for the hiring of Rekers over another expert because of his areas of expertise:

"Attorney General Bill McCollum personally urged that the state hire George Rekers, the anti-gay psychologist whose recent European trip with a gay male escort has exploded into a furious media frenzy since it was first reported last week...

****

McCollum wrote a July 2007 letter to then DCF (Department of Children and Families)  Secretary Bob Butterworth where he said his legal team “strongly” recommended the hiring of Rekers, a psychologist once on the faculty of the University of South Carolina and who helped found the Family Research Council back in the ‘80s.

“They believe that this expert and his testimony are necessary to ensure a successful result in this case,’’ wrote McCollum in the letter obtained by the Florida Tribune.

McCollum in his letter noted that initially DCF refused to hire Rekers, due primarily to the potential cost of his fees. Instead the child welfare agency wanted to only hire Walter Schumm, a professor of family studies at Kansas State University.

“Dr. Schumm is a good expert, but his areas of expertise are different from Dr. Rekers,’’ wrote McCollum. “Our attorneys handling this case have searched long and hard for other expert witnesses with comparable expertise to Dr. Rekers and have been unable to identify any who would be available for this case.”

Butterworth wrote a letter back to McCollum three days later saying that he gave “great weight to the analysis and recommendation of your staff” and authorized the hiring of Rekers as long as the state’s obligation did not exceed $60,900 for services through the trial. The state eventually paid twice that much over a two-year period.

Joe Follick, a spokesman for DCF, said that the department listened to its attorneys and decided to go along and hire Rekers.

“We retained the Attorney General to defend the Florida law,’’ said Follick. “In any of those relationships you rely on your counsel to provide the best defense. We have faith they represented us to the best of their ability.”

Not a lot of research is required to find out that Rekers is on the Board of "ex-gay" therapy group NARTH. McCollum should be held accountable.

Florida AG Bill McCollum Distances Himself from Rekers Wreck

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, whose campaign Facebook account was bombarded with negative comments last week after it was revealed that "ex-gay" right-wing hypocrite George Rekers was paid more than $100,000 to defend the state's gay adoption ban, is now distancing himself from Rekers and the "rent boy" scandal.

Mccollum Said McCollum to Naked Politics: "I will not do it again.

The paper adds: "McCollum spokeswoman Sandi Copes called to clarify: 'They have paid him but we did select him, executed a contract that DCF approved,' Copes said. 'We selected him, they paid for him.'''

'Rent Boy' Lucien: George Rekers Said He Hired Other Escorts

Here's the latest in the George Alan Rekers scandal:

A coalition has come together to stand behind "rent boy" Lucien, including, Equality Florida, NCLR, pr guy Howard Bragman, The Trevor Project, and Lambda Legal.

Roman Meanwhile, a Facebook exchange between Lucien and Rekers exposes Rekers' lie that he did not find out about his travel assistant's internet advertisements offering prostitution activity until after the trip was in progress."

In a Facebook exchange between Rekers and the gay escort dated March 20, Lucien offers to do "just about anything" at any time.

"George wanted to say when ever you want to talk, would you mind messaging, i'd prefer that," Lucien wrote at 7 p.m. "and you find out what you want to do i would be ok with just about anything and when ever is the next time you want to meet i'm ok with that as well"

Rekers responded at 10:29: "OK will do -- messaging and phone calls. I'm still working researching some trip ideas. Will let you know soon."

Lucien told the Miami New Times that Rekers told him there were more rent boys: "He's told me that he's hired other escorts, and it's never really worked out. They don't talk enough, or they've had very weird circumstances... Basically, he's never been fully comfortable with the situation, or they've jipped (sic) him. Jipped him of time or money."

Meanwhile, more than 1500 people have signed a petition demanding an apology from Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum for wasting taxpayer money on "discredited bigot-for-hire" Rekers.

Rekers Rentboy.com posted a statement regarding the Rekers scandal:

This week an anti-gay activist and family values crusader named George Rekers was caught by the Miami New Times returning from a vacation with a rentboy, and the story has turned into an international media circus, with coverage on CNN, Colbert Report, BBC, The Daily Show, The Tonight Show and the blogosphere. We were completely surprised by this turn of events and we are following it closely. At rentboy.com, it is our policy to protect the privacy of any escort advertising his services on our site--the same goes for clients. Information exchanged between consenting adults meeting on our site remains private. Mr.Rekers has built a highly public, lucrative career out of shaming gay men and women. If it is true that he took a rentboy "on vacation," then he has brought this negative attention on himself. We reserve judgment, we don't know all the facts.

Just to be clear, Rentboy.com is not an escort agency, we are an ad listing service for male escorts, where men place their own ads and work for themselves, so that clients can contact them directly. Our mission is to create a non-judgmental space where anyone curious about exploring male-male companionship can hire a man by the hour. We remain open-minded and devoted to privacy for the people who use our site, but we can't take the risk out of leading a double life, or having a closeted or hypocritical career... If you're a famous heterosexual homophobe and you appear in public with a rentboy with your pants down, you're just asking for trouble.

If you would like to Take a Pornstar or Male Escort on Vacation, Rentboy.com is where you'll find him. Excess baggage can indeed be heavy and there is nothing like a hot man to help you unload it.

Here's Rachel Maddow's excellent Friday commentary on the scandal, AFTER THE JUMP...
