What's LGBT On Kickstarter: Three Projects Worth Looking At

Kickstarter_2

From time-to-time we highlight LGBT projects on Kickstarter to inform you about up-and-coming indie LGBT art projects. Our round-up this time includes a banned book of poetry, a black LGBT film festival and a gay monogamy sitcom inspired by The Golden Girls.

While funding online projects has its risks, two of the three projects we highlighted last time made their fundraising goals, which is pretty cool.

WATCH: Debut Trailer for 'Out in the Line-up' - A New Kickstarter Doc About Homosexuality in Surfing

Out in the lineup

With the number of athletes coming out in other sports steadily increasing, you might be surprised with the fact that there has yet to be an openly gay surfer on the professional tour. A new Kickstarter-funded documentary, OUT in the line-up, is looking to uncover this long-standing taboo of homosexuality in surfing.

Synopsis via the film's website:

Out in the line-up2OUT in the line-up follows the story of two gay surfers who unite to bring the issue out into the open. Together they embark on a global journey to hear the perspectives of people from all corners of the surfing community including former world champion Cori Schumacher, big wave rider Keala Kennelly and former US Congressman Barney Frank. As their journey unfolds, they uncover a culture of fear, secrecy and exclusion but are also inspired to affect change by connecting people, provoking discussion and looking to surfing's grassroots values of freedom of spirit and love for the ocean.

The film is currently in the final stages of production and is looking to raise the funds needed to launch on the international festival circuit in early 2014.

What's LGBT on Kickstarter: Three Projects Worth Looking At

Kickstarter

Arguably, the LGBT-themed creative projects on Kickstarter and other crowd-funding sites represent the next wave in up-and-coming queer art. So from time-to-time we'll take a look at what's currently fundraising and highlight a few projects that seem worthwhile.

While funding online projects does have its risks, each successfully funded LGBT art project has the potential to highlight the true diversity of our community while shattering outdated stereotypes about us and our passions.

'Coming Out' Seeks To Show The Process Firsthand, But Needs Your Help - VIDEO

Alden comes out to his father on camera

Back in 2010, Alden Peters was taken aback by the repeated suicides of young person after young person. It was then that he decided to come out to his family, friends, and his various online acquaintances. But simply coming out wasn't enough, so he decided to embark upon a feature-length documentary, depicting the entire process firsthand.

The result is Coming Out, a film that allows the audience to witness the entirety of Peters' process, and the ensuing drama, heartbreak, support, discrimination, and formation of a new identity. The film has wrapped principal photography, and is scheduled to finish post-production this September. That is, if the film's Kickstarter campaign reaches its $20,000 goal. The film previously ran a successful Indiegogo campaign and received a grant from the Alan Landsburg Documentary Fund. More funds are unfortunately required for pickup photography, media licensing, outreach, and other costs that are outlined on the group's page.

A rough cut has been assembled, and has already been test screened for audiences at Rutgers University to supportive reviews. For those interested in seeing the finished film, digital downloads access will be given to all of the film's backers.

Creator Of 'The Outs' Has New Series, Seeks Funding On Kickstarter: VIDEO

WhateverThisIs

Adam Goldman, creator of the popular web-series, The Outs, has a new project in the works and is seeking funding on Kickstarter. Whatever This Is follows the lives of two production assistants in New York, Sam (Hunter Canning) and Ari (Dylan Marron), along with Lisa (Madeline Wise), Sam's girlfriend:

"Whatever This Is asks a tough question: how long are you expected to do work that you hate, for pennies, until it becomes something that you love that pays the rent? Is it even possible?"

As Dylan Marron puts it,

"It's a show for anyone who is in that time in your life when there isn't an orientation, and there isn’t a guidebook and you’re writing the guidebook."

You can contribute to the kickstarter page here and follow the project on Facebook.

Gay Superhero Comic Reaches $14,000 Kickstarter Goal In Less Than 24 Hours: VIDEO

Comic

Less than 24 hours after launching a Kickstarter project to publish his gay superhero web comic The Young Protectors in book form, writer Alex Woolfson has reached his $14,000 goal. Back in March, we reported on Woolfson's first Kickstarter-funded comic Artifice. Both have been tremendous successes on the crowd funding website.

Kyle"I wrote The Young Protectors because I loved action movies and superhero comics as a kid," Woolfson said. "But I never got to see what I really wanted to see and that's kick-ass genre stories with heroes who just happened to like other guys."

To foster interest in the project, Woolfson has created a variety of rewards for different levels of pledge support, including signed copies, posters, keychains, and even chances to appear in future pages of the comic. As of Tuesday afternoon, over $28,000 has been pledged to the project.

Check out Woolfson's trailer explaining the comic, AFTER THE JUMP...
