Nelsan Ellis Rips Former 'True Blood' Co-Star Luke Grimes, Who Refused To Play Gay

Nelsan Ellis, known for playing True Blood’s Lafayette, has come forward with a few choice words for former co-star Luke Grimes.

LafayetteGrimes abruptly departed the popular show last winter after learning that his character James would become romantically involved with Ellis’s in the upcoming season. True Blood, a cult gay hit, has been known to throw its characters, both male and female, into homoerotic situations at a moment’s notice, even if only for a few scenes. Ellis felt as if Grimes should have been aware of the show’s reputation, and was sending a clear message in leaving the show.

“If you have a child, if you have a son, and he comes out as gay, what are you going to do?” He asked the Huffington Post.  “You just made a statement, and it has ripple effects. I didn't like what he did because he made a statement, and sometimes you have to take responsibility.”

Nathan Parsons, who replaced Grimes, opened up to the Hollywood Reporter to talk about the importance of delving into the narratives of characters still questioning their sexualities.

[T]his story is important and should be told and needs to be shared. It’s a story that’s being told all over the place, and TV doesn’t pay enough attention to it. The "Do I love this guy or love this girl?" and "Is this right or is this wrong?" becomes more important than the act itself.

'True Blood' RECAP - 'Lost Cause' [Spoilers]

Screen Shot 2014-07-21 at 12.52.23 AM

Ain’t no party like a True Blood party, because a True Blood party includes at least one stabbing.

Break out the jungle juice, because folks in Bon Temps are getting lit. (More like Bon Turnt, amirite?) Tonight's episode lacked the action-packed punch of this season's first few installments. Blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol, I guess.

We did, however, get some nice man-on-man action (albeit with almost no nudity whatsoever, which is notable on this show).

So see who hooked up with whom, and share your comments on tonight's episode, AFTER THE JUMP ...

'True Blood' RECAP - 'Death Is Not The End' [Spoilers]

Screen Shot 2014-07-14 at 6.32.57 AM

Oh, this show. I've been pleased with how the final season of True Blood has been thinning the herd of the show's ridiculously bloated ensemble. However, after tonight's episode, I'm left a little unclear what the thrust of the remaining will be. Sometimes these things wrap themselves up a little too nicely. We're just four episodes in, and tonight's episode swiftly dealt with two of the primary groups of antagonists this season.

At least we know we can count on Sookie to run roughshod over everyone's lives in Bon Temps. It's probably the only thing we can count on from this show (aside from the gratuitous shirtlessness and sassy Pam one-liners).

Let's hold hands in bed and try to remember everything that happened in tonight's episode, AFTER THE JUMP ...

Luke Grimes Left 'True Blood' Because He Didn't Want to Play Gay: Report

Lukegrimes

Last Sunday’s True Blood premiere reacquainted us with Jessica’s (Deborah Ann Woll) new love interest James, a handsome fellow vampire that she’d met in southern vampire prison. Fans of the show were surprised to see the character, previously played by Luke Grimes, suddenly replaced by Nathan Parsons of Bunheads fame.

According to HBO Grimes’s departure was due to a disagreement over “the creative direction of the character.” Put frankly, Grimes was not comfortable with the not-so-subtle homoerotic storyline developing between James and Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis.)

Tumblr_n7m2aikro71qd6a26o1_250Grimes’s publicist insisted to Buzzfeed that the departure was due entirely to conflicts in the actor’s schedule with upcoming roles in 50 Shades of Grey, The Shangri-La Suite, and, American Sniper. Grimes’s team claims that he was not privy to the character’s story-arc in advance, though True Blood has a well established history of portraying its vampire characters in particular as sexually fluid and diverse.

Changes Ahead for Lafayette on 'True Blood' Final Season

Ellis

[SPOILERS]

Michael Ausiello at TV Line has the scoop:

Lafayette’s getting a new boyfriend — and a serious one at that. After spending much of Season 6 in the shadows, Nelsan Ellis will sashay back to the forefront in True Blood‘s final season — with a little help from Drake. Described as a cross between Jim Morrison and James Dean, this brooding and insanely good-looking vamp is a compassionate protector with a poet’s edge. The series-regular role calls for a twentysomething actor who is comfortable performing in simulated (and near-naked) sex scenes with another man in front of the director, assistant director, stage manager, script supervisor, camera operator, first assistant camera, second assistant camera, boom operator, production sound mixer, key grip, best boy grip, gaffer, lighting technician, makeup artist, hairdresser, costume designer, a half-dozen production assistants and Sally with craft services (who shouldn’t be peeking in but probably will be).

Six Unforgettable Gay Moments From 'True Blood'

BY BOBBY HANKINSON

It’s no secret that HBO’s True Blood has built a solid gay fan base. Yes, there are parallels between the vampires' quest for civil rights and the current climate for LGBT Americans. But, beyond that, the over-the-top series serves up plenty of action with an abundance of beefcake. Don’t let the vampires, werewolves and witches fool you; this series is not for kids.

In honor of the sixth season premiere Sunday on HBO, we’ve rounded up six of our favorite gay moments from the show’s previous seasons.

More, AFTER THE JUMP...
