Ricky Martin: HIV/AIDS Not A Gay Disease

6a00d8341c730253ef017ee49a2ad1970d-800wiRicky Martin took a break from his busy Broadway schedule to chat with the Huffington Post about his work fighting HIV/AIDS and how people's minds still need to be expanded when it comes to the disease's demographics.

"It's really sad when people say, 'Yeah, that's an issue for gays,' because it's not only the gay community that's struggling with AIDS -- it's [heterosexual] men, women and children, too," he said.

"For many years I did it quietly, because I had this conception people might think I was doing it for recognition, until I talked to real activists who told me, 'Dude, you need to talk about this, because people listen.'"

And if they're not listening, they're definitely looking at Martin when he drops trou for the non-profit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (see right).

Martin and Wong also discussed President Obama's reelection, which Martin describes as "nothing but light."

"If we went the other way, it was going to be like going back in time. As a Latino Puerto Rican U.S. citizen that can vote for the president, it was very beautiful to see minorities getting together for democracy, for freedom, for civil rights," said the singer and Evita star.

Ricky Martin dropped a pantsless shot on his WhoSay page:

E! writes:

The 40-year-old will be auctioning off his trousers for charity to help benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a nonprofit that's actively raised funds to help AIDS-related causes for more than two decades now.

"We even ended up auctioning my pants WTF!!! LOL Terminamos subastando hasta mis pantalones jajaja @BCEFA," the star tweeted.

Ricky Martin is headed to television, according to the Hollywood Reporter:

The multi-platinum singer, who recently appeared on an episode of Glee and is currently starring in Broadway's Evita revival, has signed a talent holding deal with NBCUniversal that will see him developing his own starring network TV vehicle.

Universal TV EVP Bela Bajaria announced the news on Monday. “Ricky is an iconic superstar who is as talented as he is popular,” she said. “Whether he’s performing before sold-out concert crowds, or starring on Broadway, where he is currently playing to SRO in Evita, Ricky connects with his audience in a very palpable way -- and we are thrilled that he will be adding TV star to his incredible resume.”

Obama Delivering Barnard Commencement Address Alongside Evan Wolfson; Will Attend NYC LGBT Fundraiser Later

Obama is delivering Barnard College's commencement address at this hour, NY1 reports:

Fund_obamaArriving in the city late Monday morning, the president is slated to deliver the commencement address before 600 Barnard graduates at 1 p.m.

Obama called Barnard President Debora Spar on February 29 and requested to speak at the commencement. The original scheduled speaker, New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson, agreed to step aside to allow the president to headline the event.

While both Democrats and Republicans have recently debated on the campaign trail a women's right to choose and issues concerning working women, one of the scheduled student speakers at the commencement, Jessica Blank, told NY1 she hoped the president would also address the economy in his speech.

"You can't not talk about jobs. I think it's going to be interesting to see the balance I'm talking about, women's issues and jobs. I think they're both going to be prominently featured in his speech," said Blank. "But I think that coming to Barnard is a little bit different than whatever other colleges the president has spoken at in the past about jobs, because of this issue of women's leadership, and it's such a focus at Barnard, especially during the last four years."

The president is expected to receive a medal of distinction at the commencement.

WolfsonAlso receiving the medal is Freedom to Marry Founder and President Evan Wolfson. The joint honor was planned well before last week's historic announcement from Obama.

Said Wolfson in a statement:

I am deeply moved to join with President Obama to celebrate the next generation of leaders coming up among Barnard women, and to share the Barnard Medal of Distinction with him. I will thank the President for doing what we elect presidents to do - showing moral leadership in standing up for freedom, fairness, and families - and for speaking in such personal terms about the journey he and so many Americans have made to understand who gay familes are and why marriage matters.

Later this afternoon Obama will attend an LGBT fundraiser:

After the commencement, Obama is heading to the Rubin Museum of Art in Chelsea for a $5,000-a-ticket fundraiser co-hosted by the LGBT Leadership Council and openly gay singer Ricky Martin.
