George Takei Calmly Eviscerates Anti-Gay Tennessee Lawmakers in New 'Fireside Chat': VIDEO

In a new 'fireside chat", George Takei calmly shreds Tennessee lawmakers for the anti-gay legislation they're pushing. First, he takes on Stacey Campfield and his "Don't Say Gay" bill, followed by Rep. John Ragan and his bill that protects bullies of LGBT kids behind a veil of religious freedom, and finally, Rep. Richard Floyd, who threatened to "stomp a mud hole" through any transgender person coming near his family.

Takei explains why they all remind him of 'friends of Dorothy' in his delicious takedown.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson and 'The View' Ladies Discuss Tennessee's 'Don't Say Gay' Bill: VIDEO

Last week I mentioned that in testimony over Tennessee's 'Don't Say Gay' bill (Which a House panel advanced last week), one lawmaker suggested that parents not allow kids to watch Modern Family because they would discover that gays exist. Jesse Tyler Ferguson and the ladies of The View discussed those developments today.

'Don't Say Gay' Bill Approved by Tennessee House Panel

Rep. Stacey Campfield's disgusting 'Don't Say Gay' bill, which forbids discussion of homosexuality and anything but “natural human reproduction science” in public school before the ninth grade, has been advanced by a Tennessee house panel, The Tennesseean reports:

CampfieldThe House Education subcommittee approved the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill on a voice vote Wednesday, renewing a debate that roiled the legislature last spring over whether elementary and middle schools should be allowed to initiate discussions about homosexuality.

The panel accepted the version of the bill that passed the state Senate late in last year’s session.

Opponents say it will not curb talk about homosexuality among grade school kids but will send the signal that it should be stigmatized. But several lawmakers argued that it would protect parents’ right to educate their children about their beliefs on their own terms.

The Tennessee Equality Project condemned the bill again last month:

“The very existence of this bill sends a bad message about Tennessee at a time when we should look at constructive proposals to make schools safe, welcoming places for all students,” according to TEP Nashville Committee Chair Chris Sanders. “The fact that this is the one of the first bills debated this year makes the citizens of Tennessee wonder how serious our Legislature is about improving our schools.”

You may also recall that its author, Campfield, was thrown out of the Bistro on the Bijou restaurant by its owner Martha Boggs.

Campfield also came under fire for ignorant remarks he made in an interview with Michelangelo Signorile in which he called the bullying of gay teens a farce and made false assertions about AIDS.

Martha Boggs, the owner of Knoxville, Tennessee's Bistro at the Bijou restaurant who refused to serve "Don't Say Gay" bill author Senator Stacey Campfield last week, explains why she did it to the Knoxville News.

Boggs also posted a thank you to her supporters on the restaurant's Facebook page yesterday.

Dear Friends

I want to thank everyone for all the wonderful e-mails and posts sent over the last few days. While I have read each and every one of them, I dearly wish that I had the time to respond to you all personally. The stories and emotions that you shared with me are deeply touching. I truly had no idea that the power of the internet would take this story of a simple act of defiance and take it all the way around the world in a matter of 72 hours and touch so many lives.

I am just a hill billy from Ducktown TN, my family is blue collar. I have worked really hard to get where I am today but I had a lot of help along the way. Like many of you I was bullied and teased for various reasons but in the end it only made me stronger. I hope that the pain that many of you have endured will help make you stronger as well.

While I truly appreciate the sentiment to come by and patronize my establishment, that was not my intent, but if you trulyfwwl compeled to make a contribution against hatred and intolerance, please donate to the local politican of your choice where you money and your vote will do the most good to you personally.

let the healing begin, it will get better.
Martha Boggs

TN Lawmaker Stacey Campfield Discusses Being Tossed Out of Restaurant as CNN Picks Up Story: VIDEO

Tennessee state Senator Stacey Campfield, author of the dangerous 'Don't Say Gay' bill, continues to spread his lies about gay people and AIDS. Yesterday, he was interviewed by David Pakman, who asked him about being kicked out of the Bistro at the Bijou restaurant earlier this week in Knoxville.

This morning, Michelangelo Signorile spoke to CNN about Campfield's lies and the damage he's doing in his state, where two teenagers recently committed suicide due to anti-gay bullying.

TN Senator Stacey Campfield Reportedly Thrown Out of Restaurant Over His Anti-Gay Remarks: VIDEO

Knoxville, Tennessee restaurant Bistro at the Bijou is receiving boatloads of support on Facebook after reports began surfacing that it refused service to state Senator Stacey Campfield out and asked him to leave.

Campfield is also getting blowback from local news outlets in Tennessee over his remarks. Watch him defend them in a WBIR interview, AFTER THE JUMP...

CampfieldCampfield, who has been in the news again recently because he's still trying to push his heinous homophobic "don't say gay" bill in Tennessee, gave an interview last week to Michelangelo Signorile in which he asserted that bullying of gay kids "is a lark", compared homosexuality to sex with animals, asserted that homosexuality is "glorified" in the media, and that it's "virtually impossible" for heterosexuals to contract AIDS.

Some of the responses on Facebook to the alleged restaurant incident:

Brooke Scurlock
From Nashville- thank you for your stand against bigotry and discrimination! Will be sure to eat at your place when in Knoxville and spread the word to friends and family! Thank you!

Jeff Doughty
Just heard a rumor that yall asked th village idiot to leave!! If its true, THANK YOU!!

Kelly Schaal
If you did indeed kick Mr. Campfield out of your establishment...I applaud you!! That clown is an embarrassment to our state and an embarrassment to the residents that actually aren't small minded bigots, living in a 1950's mentality. I cannot wait for this joke of a "representative" to be replaced. He has done absolutely NOTHING for the people of Tennessee. These old school bigots will soon become the minority. I guess those of you that actually agree with his politics, should enjoy it while it lasts! He WILL be replaced very soon. I've always enjoyed The Bistro and now I'll enjoy it even more.

I haven't been able to find a full, proper account of what went down at the Bistro, and Facebook responders are also asking for one, so, hopefully we'll hear something official soon.

UPDATE - from Buzzfeed:

An unfazed Campfield told BuzzFeed in a brief telephone interview that "I went in there and the lady started calling me names and wouldn't serve me." The hostess told him he was a homophobe and that he hates homosexuals, he said.

Campfield said that on the contrary, he has no problem with gays. "In my business I do rental properties and I've rented to homosexuals, mixed-race couples, black couples," he said. "And about every single group you can think of has been in my office."

There's also a petition online to fire Campfield and a Facebook page to recall him.
