Upcoming 'Star Wars' Novel Will Introduce Series' First Queer Character

Long ago in a galaxy far, far away a young Imperial woman by the name of Moff Mors became the first canonical lesbian to be introduced into the Star Wars universe. Mors will be a central character featured in Star Wars: Lords of the Sith, an upcoming novel set within the broader Star Wars universe penned by Paul S. Kemp.

As Big Shiny Robot points out, Mors’s introduction into Star Wars lore, while momentous, might seem a bit underwhelming to hardcore fans familiar with the expanded universe.

Ziro the Hutt, a character introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and C3PO are commonly thought to have been implied to be gay based on their mannerisms. It should be pointed out that Hutts are hermaphroditic and reproduce sexually and C3PO, as best as anyone can tell, wasn’t designed with those protocols in mind. Mors, explained Del Rey publishing’s Star Wars editor Shelly Shapiro, will openly identify as a lesbian.

"This is certainly the first character in canon," Shapiro said. "But there was a gay Mandalorian couple, so it's not brand new.” She added:

“There's a lot of diversity--there should be diversity in "Star Wars." You have all these different species and it would be silly to not also recognize that there's a lot of diversity in humans. If there's any message at all, it's simply that "Star Wars" is as diverse (or more so because they have alien species) as humanity is in real life and we don't want to pretend it's not. It just felt perfectly natural."

Mary Cheney Describes Herself As 'Darth Vader's Daughter,' Talks GOP Support for Marriage Equality

Mary cheneySomewhere in Mary Cheney’s home sits a vintage action figure of the one-time Supreme Commander of the Imperial Fleet. Specifically--the toy lives in her seven year-old son’s room as a tongue-in-cheek reminder of Cheney’s self-proclaimed identity as “Darth Vader’s daughter.”

Cheney joked about her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, earlier this week during an intimate gathering of college Republicans at the American University in Washington, D.C. Despite Cheney’s longstanding alignment with the Republican Party, she continues to openly push for a more socially progressive GOP when it comes to LGBT equality. In her estimation, she explained, much of the Right’s future success will be contingent upon its continued evolution of thought when it comes to gay Americans.

“I think you’re going to see a lot more Republicans taking the Scott Walker, Chris Christie approach of ‘that’s settled, we’re moving on,’” she said. “I don’t picture the whole national Republican Party running to embrace the issue of marriage equality any time in the near future, I certainly don’t expect to see it in the party’s platform next year in Cleveland.”

Cheney admitted that none of the current potential Republican frontrunners for the 2016 presidential election piqued her interest in particular, though she “would love it if Rob Portman decided to run.”

When asked Cheney declined to comment on her very public spat with her older sister Liz’s opposition to gay marriage.

Screenshot 2014-07-21 14.34.18

J.J. Abrams gave the world its first glimpse at a battle-worn X-Wing from Star Wars: Episode VII this morning in a video promoting the Star Wars: Force For Change campaign. Launched back in May of this year, Force For Change sought to raise funds for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund’s Innovation Labs, which aims to spur innovation in UNICEF’s means of reaching out.

By giving anywhere between $10-$50,000 through the campaign’s Omaze page in the next four days, fans will be entered into a raffle to shoot a scene and be in the next Star Wars film and tour the London set with Abrams. Supporters are also entered to win the chance to host an advanced screening of the film for themselves and 20 friends.
