The Hobbit Battle of the Five Armies

The trailer for the next entry in Peter Jackson's Hobbit films has now hit the internet, and while there is precious little in the way of dragon-slaying there are plenty of tantalizing scenes hinting at the greater war to come in The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies.

Actor Ian McKellen Surprises Audience At Hobbit Premiere: VIDEO

Gandalf

Fans of Peter Jackson and J.R.R. Tolkien got a surprise when they attended a Friday the 13th midnight showing of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug at New York City's AMC Lincoln Square—Gandalf the Grey himself (Ian McKellen) appeared for a few opening remarks.

The crowd broke into applause and gave the openly gay British actor a standing ovation as he commented on the film. McKellen said, "I think the dragon goes on a bit long, but my God he looks amazing." If you've seen the film, you know he's right.

He also says, "I just wanted to let you know that when we were doing Lord of the Rings all those years ago at the beginning of the century, we didn't really know whether anybody was going to want to come and see them. And it happened that you and others enjoyed them. So when we went back to do the pickups for part two and part three of Lord of the Rings, it was as if we were making these films for people who really cared."

McKellen is currently playing in a Broadway production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot and in Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land. He's also been seen hanging around with his BFF and Godot co-star Sir Patrick Stewart outside The Stonewall Inn.

New 'Hobbit' TV Spot Shows Bilbo Leaving Home: VIDEO

Bilbo

Middle Earth fanatics got more glimpses of the upcoming Hobbit adaptation with a new TV spot added this week which features a closer look at Martin Freeman's Bilbo Baggins being sent out into the world by Ian McKellen: "The world is not in your books and maps -- it’s out there."

In related news is Denny's stomach ache-inducing new 'Eat like Bilbo Baggins' menu:

Many of the dishes are simply rewarmed stand-bys: “Hobbit Harvest Pies” are just pumpkin and pecan pie by another name. But some of the menu items actually seem to have involved a bit of hard-spun creativity. There’s “Lonely Mountain Treasure” — cubes of seeded cake — and “Radagast’s Red Velvet Pancake Puppies” — balls of pancake batter studded with white chocolate chips. Both are offered with a side of cream cheese icing to speed you on your way to the land of type II diabetes.

There’s also “Bilbo’s Berry Smoothie” (old hobbits have to stay healthy, after all) and “Lone-Lands Campfire Cookie Milk Shake,” which we think could have been more evocatively titled, “Campfire on Caradhras.” On second thought, Denny’s title does sound a bit more tasty.
