The Miami Herald reports that the Fort Lauderdale-adjacent enclave of Wilton Manors has become the third most populous gay city in the nation, behind Provincetown, Massachusetts and Guerneville, California.
“Many see Georgie’s Alibi Bar & Grill, a gay bar that opened seven years ago, as the catalyst that helped turn Wilton Manors into a haven for gays.” It’s interesting to me that even today gay neighborhoods continue to be built around nightlife that serves as a nexus for community. I’ve heard a lot of people say that that’s a thing of the past. Perhaps that’s jumping the gun. We’re not that assimilated — yet.
