Tony Blair tells Attitude magazine that Britain is ready for a gay prime minister: “Anybody who’s an adult will learn from their own experience that there are people with a different sexuality. There are heterosexual people and homosexual people and that is just a fact.”
Conservative leader Michael Howard, who brought in Clause 28 while serving under Margaret Thatcher, also expressed that he had changed his mind about the Clause, which banned funding of films, plays, books, and other material that presented homosexuality in a positive light: “‘I’ve changed on that. I was wrong. I thought, rightly or wrongly, there was a problem in those days. That problem simply doesn’t exist now. It’s not a problem, so the law shouldn’t be hanging around on the statute book.”
