Matthew Perpetua over at Fluxblog offers a glimpse at the new album from Nouvelle Vague, and a snacky cover of The English Beat Modern English’s “I Melt With You” which always inspires a joyful/melancholy retreat back to my days in college. Perpetua: “I’m sure that over the years, this song has appeared on countless mixes made for crushes and romantic partners, and that at least half of those people put the song on to express the sentiment of this version – cuddly, low-key sexiness rather than epic romance.”
Nouvelle Vague’s French/Bossa Nova/New Wave makeover works beautifully on this track. If you’re hungry for more, an EP on iTunes will get you two more covers — Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and PIL’s “This is Not a Love Song.”
Addendum: Yes, “I Melt With You” is Modern English, not The English Beat. But the Beat is great too, and they both occupy the same little apartment in my brain. Sorry for the mistake – it’s Monday morning…
