Why can’t this kind of sanity be practiced in America? Spain’s Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero took on the Vatican in a brave, rational ‘State of the Nation’ address that touched on his most high-profile policy to date: gay marriage.
Said Zapatero: “I will never understand those who proclaim love as the foundation of life, while denying so radically protection, understanding and affection to our neighbours, our friends, our relatives, our colleagues. What kind of love is this that excludes those who experience their sexuality in a different way? I am aware that this measure is one of the most controversial we have approved…(but) we cannot deny a right to many of our compatriots when the exercise of that right does not harm anyone else.”
How refreshing to hear a world leader take a stand against the hideous civil rights laws affecting so much of the western world. The Vatican recently threatened that any religious officials in Spain who chose to marry same-sex partners would risk losing their jobs. I am glad to see that someone is finally standing up to the bullies.
