One day after Pope Benedict reiterated his feelings against same-sex marriage, a group of approximately 40 activists demanding that the church stay out of Italian affairs protested outside St. Peter’s Square. The protest was timed to mark the anniversary of the death of Alfredo Ormando, a gay man who set himself on fire there in 1998 to protest the Catholic church’s position regarding homosexuality.
