An Australian Private serving in Iraq is dead in a military accident after playing with his gun and joking to his fellow soldier that a song they were listening to was “so gay [he] would rather be dead.”
A roommate of Private Jacob Kovco testified that the two were relaxing in their barracks listening to pop music when Kovko's gun went off:
“I didn't see Private Kovco remove his pistol from his holster within the room and I am unaware of how he shot himself. I think he might have done it in a joking way. The song we were singing was in a female, homosexual way. [It was] almost to say this is so gay I would rather be dead. I have no evidence to support this theory and I didn't see Private Kovco do it, but it is the only way I can explain how Private Kovco shot himself.”
The inquiry into Kovco's death is ongoing.
