State Auditor Hector Balderas, who is running for U.S. Senate in New Mexico and must defeat Rep. Martin Heinrich in the Democratic primary, tells New Mexico's KNME that he supports marriage equality:
“Absolutely. But more importantly than that, I've been advocating for civil rights for almost all my life,” said Balderas. “I'm an attorney, I was a prosecutor that fought hard for victims' rights. So, any type of discrimination in this country really needs to be addressed swiftly.”
Heinrich, who has co-sponsored a bill to repeal DOMA, has not yet come out for equal marriage rights, but takes, as the paper notes, Obama's position on the issue.
