Last week, we reported that Jason Collins is being considered by the Brooklyn Nets. Today comes word that, according to ESPN, the team will choose Collins if their first pick decides to play for another team in the NBA. The potential scenario:

There is growing sentiment within the Brooklyn Nets' organization to move quickly to sign Jason Collins to a 10-day contract if they are spurned by free agent-to-be Glen Davis, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Collins will meet with the Nets later Sunday and is expected to sign with Brooklyn, a source told ESPN.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Nets — who have made Davis their top frontcourt target — still intend to make a signing soon if they can't convince Davis to choose them over the Los Angeles Clippers.

USA TODAY reports that Davis is indeed expected to go to the Clippers and that the Nets' next pick would be Collins.

"…according to a person with knowledge of the situation – the Nets were told on Sunday morning that Davis would sign with the Clippers and Collins is widely believed to be their next option. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the talks."

If the Nets do indeed sign Collins, he would become the first openly gay player in the NBA.
