Sam Smith was reportedly involved in an incident centered on racial slurs while out at a popular London bar on Tuesday night. It is not yet clear whether Smith was just a witness to the incident or whether he is at all implicated.
Questions arose about what happened Tuesday after a London native tweeted that Smith screamed “black c*nt” outside the Soho bar Freedom. Said Twitter user Simon Wallerus, “I have to say, @samsmithworld screaming ”black c*nt’ outside @freedombarsoho is something special to witness on a tuesday…!”

Meanwhile, Smith said on Twitter that he was left “speechless and hurt” after a friend was verbally abused with racial slurs. “Just experienced my friend getting verbally abused racially in London. I am absolutely SPEECHLESS,” Smith said. “I never ever ever ever thought that would happen here. Absolutely speechless and hurt,” he added.

Smith continued to discuss the incident until the early hours of Wednesday morning: “I feel like I have to shine some sort of light on it. The police were so unhelpful in the situation and its deeply shocked me. Humans are HUMANS. I feel like I have to say something. I’m just so upset. So UPSET.”

Though Wallerus had been contacted by the paper The Evening Standard, he has yet to expand upon his tweet about what he overheard Tuesday night.
Twitter users, meanwhile, were quick to criticize Smith for “whitesplaining” racism.
