Jeremy O. Harris Reacts to His Record-Breaking 12 Tony Nominations for ‘Slave Play’ — WATCH

Andy Towle October 16, 2020 Leave a Comment

Slave Play.

On Thursday, Jeremy O. Harris, who happens to be gay, received the most nominations in Tony Awards history for a stage play for his drama about interracial relationships, Slave Play (our review here).

Said Harris to the New York Times: “I'm freaking out! … There are a lot of issues with the white maleness of the Tonys, but the 12 nominations feels like a statement from the community saying that right now, we do want to focus on Black lives. The last time a play was nominated this much was ‘Angels in America,' which was the most influential play for me as a teenager.”

Obviously my first response is to say "insane", make a "Thanks Amy Cooper" joke, or just remind everyone all the people these awards generally ignore but i can't do that.

Im lit crying.
⁰In Shock.

I did this last night and stayed in the outfit bc I wanted to celebrate being alive for a crazy time in history…now I guess I was celebrating making history too?

I stayed in this outfit for 24 hours btw. pic.twitter.com/vMPu8FhV8h

Harris also spoke with Broadway News: “Right before the Tony nominations, we did a Zoom call with the cast, crew, producers and director Robert O'Hara. We said no matter what happened today, we already had succeeded in the way that we wanted to succeed because it was improbable that this play would even happen. This is the play I wrote for a basement theater at Yale. And I never, ever had aspirations that it would get to Broadway. In fact, it was writing it against the idea that it would go to Broadway. I was writing against commercial impulses. It hit me like the greatest orgasm one could ever have. I was so honored to know that not only did the community really like this play, but also to have them say, this is a play we want to be remembered in history.”

Harris's wasn't the only queer theatrical masterwork that received multiple nominations. Matthew Lopez's epic AIDS drama The Inheritance picked up 11.
