Tab: Isaiah Washington Used Gay Slur in Grey's Anatomy Brawl

Greys_2An on-set confrontation between Grey's Anatomy co-stars Isaiah Washington and Patrick Dempsey which resulted in Washington grabbing Dempsey by the throat and shoving him was kicked up a notch this morning when the National Enquirer (the tabloid that broke news of the fight) revealed that Washington had used a gay slur during the confrontation:

The melee has set off World War III on the show and may cost Isaiah his job," an insider told The ENQUIRER. "The cast is divided over the shameful event."

As The ENQUIRER exclusively revealed last week, Patrick and Isaiah clashed over cast members being late to the set, right before shooting a scene at Prospect Studios in Los Angeles.

A heated discussion quickly escalated to violence when Isaiah snapped, revealed an eyewitness. At one point, Isaiah yelled, "I'm not your little faggot like (name deleted)," according to the source. Those who heard him were stunned.

The tabloid, however, refuses to identify who the gay slur was directed at, citing its 'extreme nature', however, Washington did refer to T.R. Knight as a "bitch" in earlier reports...

Now with all the McDreaminess and McSteaminess on the Grey's Anatomy set, there's bound to be some alpha male-style jockeying for position between the male co-stars, but these aren't the kind of blows one would want it to come to. More to come as we hear it, and if anyone has heard it, please send us an email...

  2. Okay, this report came from the National Enquirer. Does anyone believe that rag? They sell papers based on lies and innuendos.

  3. Isn't "Derrick from Philly" black?

Anyways...this is great since I have a bit of a crush on George O'Malley.

  4. Is this a cable show? Doesn't sound like my cup of tea at all.

  6. BTW, it's interesting to see how easily some gay people are at spewing racist garbage while simultaneously complaining of alleged homophobia:

"Wow, a black man loses it.... shocking
    Posted by: M | Oct 18, 2006 5:17:22 PM"

"Derrick: You are so right. But in this insane age of political correctness, white people can't say anything to black America. But it is true:
    Gay is the new Black!

  7. Racist garbage? Please, they simply called a spade a spade. I'm so fucking tired of political correctness.

  8. jjabely, i can say with 100% certainty that T.R. is most definitely NOT a "tina head." That is so far from reality it's not even funny. I have known T.R. for almost 3 years, we have lunched together, we have dined together, we have worked out together, and recently wrapped up a business relationship where were were speaking everyday. you are sadly, sadly mistaken. T.R. is a top notch guy.

  9. I saw Isaiah on the Megan Mullaly show a few days ago. I'm not sure whether it pre-dates this incident. Anyway, Isaiah made a very pro-gay comment, which I can't remember well enough to quote, but it had something to do with gay marriage. Either he was doing pre-emptive damage control (if the show aired after the incident, but before the details got out), or he's not actually homophobic.

  10. Well... Isaiah jumped into a burning condo building and saved 6 orphaned gay babies. True story! My cousin told me!

It looks like Mr. Washington didn't use the word "faggot" after all. But, it's much easier to believe the National Enquirer than to investigate the facts.

    Tom,
"Racist garbage? Please, they simply called a spade a spade. I'm so fucking tired of political correctness.

Your statement proves the point. On the one hand, you condemn a man for allegedly calling a guy a faggot (embracing political correctness). Then you scream about how terrible political correctness is when racism is pointed out. Pot meet kettle.

Blaming a bad temper on someone's race is racist by definition. Racism is just as bad as homophobia. Just as condemning someone based off an article in the National Enquirer is really fucked up. Moreover, the condescending attitude about whites not being able to speak to black America is such crypto-racist bullshit. As if all African-Americans walk, talk, and think alike. Is Colin Powell the intellectual twin of 50-Cent?

Do you hold the exact same values and opinions of John Waters, Barney Frank, Mark Foley, or Andrew Sullivan? That's right, all of those INDIVIDUALS have distinct views on the world: some clashing and some overlapping.

So why is it okay to say that all African-Americans have a hive mind, unable to think for themselves? Why is it okay to make bigoted remarks against them but not against gays?

Because a white man and black man get into an argument says less about the culture at large as much as it does about the individuals. Actors being tempermental? That's never happened in Hollywood? Get real.

Again, the facts now show that Washington didn't call anyone a faggot.

Many gays compare the gay rights struggle with the Civil Rights Era. But some seem to have little respect for their supposed siblings in the fight for dignity.

  12. Um, Noah, you're not really calling US magazine "facts" are you?

    Posted by: Wayne | Oct 19, 2006 8:22:44 AM

  13. Yeah, Noah, the US Magazine report is from a week ago and matches the original Defamer report. The update on Defamer is from an email sent out by the National Enquirer in the last couple of days. Good investigation of the facts!

    Posted by: Kevin | Oct 19, 2006 8:37:22 AM

  14. So let me get this right. The National Enquirer is now a place for facts? As for all of the race stuff, it just proves what I've thought for ages: white gays are no better or worse when it comes to racism.

    peace

  15. Tom... "a spade a spade" ? Sure, you're tired of political correctness, but have the courage to be a clever coward. Well, try this one on: karma is karma--and no wonder you and your life are a mess. You smell, dude... and rancid is rancid.

  16. Of course Derrick from Philly is black (kinda' on the yella' side, but that doesn't do me any good), and a queen too. My point was that too many folks don't know that calling a gay person a "faggot, cocksucker, fruit, bulldyker, etc." at their place of employment is the same as making a racial on ethnic slur. It should be treated that way by the management of whatever company or institution where it occurs. I've had it happen to me too often and it aint right. Those who are used to reading my bitter (sometimes tinged with a little alcohol induced self-pity) comments know that I would've had the same response to that story on Keith's, Jasmyne's or Rod's blogs.

Don't accuse me of being no Auntie Thomasina now...I DON'T KISS NOBODY'S BEHIND--not black, not white, not even Tiger Tyson's...well?

Posted by: Derrick from Philly | Oct 19, 2006 10:47:12 AM

  17. From reading the reports, didn't Isiah say: "I'm not your faggot." which is completely different even if he was alluding to T.R.; and yes, nph is gay--which makes him wondeful.

    Posted by: tekay | Oct 19, 2006 12:13:53 PM

  18. ...gee, don't gays call each faggot? you better work it, bitch...!

    Posted by: yeahisaidit | Oct 19, 2006 12:25:58 PM

  19. Launching the initial salvo that turned this issue "racial" is really workin' my nerves. You know what? Most white gays ignore white racism, don't believe it's a serious problem anymore; most black gays ignore black gay bashing, believe it's feminine acting queens "bringing it on themselves" (I was going to change the word "most" to "too many", but no, that's accurate) The word "faggot" is as powerful and painful a word to some of us as "nigger" or "cracka" or "wop" or "kyke" is to others. My employer has a policy of no discrimination or harassment based on sexual orientation. Too many fuckin' idiots don't understand that the use of the word "faggot" against a gay person is in violation of that policy. That was the point of my original comment. Two straight guys having a fight and one calls the other "you faggot"-- that's one thing. But straight folks calling gay people faggots on the job. I want your white, black, Latino, or Eskimo ass FIRED! Anybody got any Old Granddad, dammit?

Posted by: Derrick from Philly | Oct 19, 2006 12:58:36 PM

  20. But therein lies the rub, Derrick. The terms faggot and nigg-a/er have been ADOPTED by the very communities that are offended by them, with the assinine notion that they will "lose their power". It's insane! "It's ok if I say it, but not ok if YOU say it." BULLSHIT! If you are going to adopt a derrogatory word into your vernacular, sexual or racial, then you are also going to adopt the consequences, i.e. the infusion of that word into media and ultimately, the general population.

  21. When Mickey Rourke was being chastized by this site for using the word faggot just a few weeks ago, I don't recall reading any comments that his views had something to do with him being a white male.

But look at all the comments here.

What does race have anything to do with this incident? Is an actor who happens to be black using the word "faggot" worse because he's black?

One comment: "But in this insane age of political correctness, white people can't say anything to black America. But it is true."

Really? I don't recall any comments that Mickey Rouke's comments were typical of white guys. Judging by several comments on this story alone, some of you CLEARLY have no problems mouthing off on how awful blacks are. Oh, wait, is it that you won't dare say it to a black person's face, but you feel comfortable making such comments anonymously online?

As someone else has commented, blaming a bad temper on someone's race is racist by definition.

Go through the archives on this site. PLENTY of stories on the use of the word faggot by non-blacks. Mickey Rourke's story was just a few weeks ago.

Some of you clearly have issues with black people, and the minute you see a story about an actor who happens to be black using the word faggot, you get obsessed with the "black" part of it.

Mickey Rourke's story is about a has-been actor acting badly. This black actor using the word faggot gives us these lovely comments from gays complaining about injustice:

Wow, a black man loses it.... shocking
    Posted by: M | Oct 18, 2006 5:17:22 PM"

Racist garbage? Please, they simply called a spade a spade. I'm so fucking tired of political correctness.
    Posted by: Tom | Oct 19, 2006 1:21:29 AM

Are those posters so consumed by racial hatred, and the minute they see a story involving a black guy behaving badly, it's the race's fault? Meanwhile, white guys, like Rourke, using the word faggot says a lot about the individual but nothing about the race.

  22. oh let's just all hold hands and eat some fried chicken on a color-coordinated, well set table, shall we?

    Posted by: louis | Oct 19, 2006 3:12:14 PM

  23. WTF,

Sorry gay is not the new black. Despite what you say white people say plenty about blacks and other minorities despite of political correctness. I'm always amused when a polarized group wants to assert how they are the new group that is spat on. How about joining the club and fighting against all kinds of discrimination instead of ranking them.

  24. TR Knight just SCREAMS gay to me. I bet George O'Malley is a gay boy trapped in a faux-straight-boy's body. That would only make me love him more than I do now. Ten bucks says Sara Ramirez's character is a transsexual!

The latter part aside, this diva-fest between McDreamy and Preston Burke has gotten out of control.
