Eminem: Some Artists Grow, Others Simply Fester
Eminem is back with a new track called "No Apologies" in which he puts himself squarely in the latter category. A few choice lyrics:
"fuck yeah i'm a basketcase and i master this rap shit til' my ass gets wasted, til' my assassination, til' i'm slain cuz of some fag's infatuation..."
Wonder if Elton John has tired of his infatuation yet?

"artist?"

No level of artistry makes up for ignorance and hate.
Posted by: Martin | Nov 22, 2006 10:36:17 AM
Talk about broken record. I think he's lost his relevance.
Posted by: Ridwah | Nov 22, 2006 10:36:52 AM
When was he *ever* relevant?
Posted by: Jonathon | Nov 22, 2006 10:39:13 AM
Isn't it time for him to release an album of old jazz standards by now?
Roll over and die now, you ignorant waste of molecules.
Posted by: Rey | Nov 22, 2006 10:41:26 AM
Yeah, I always kind of wondered, when Elton used to say how funny Eminem was, did Elton laugh when he heard Em rhyme about Versace's murder, and "checking the mail," did you laugh about that, Elton, when he mocked the murder of your supposed good friend?

Oh please, must we address and add credence to this blatantly transparent attempt at publicity??
Posted by: forreal | Nov 22, 2006 10:53:47 AM
However much it will add to his publicity, and to his bank account, which it will, it will, such verbal assaults MUST be answered. Always. "Silence equals assent." Always.
Posted by: Leland | Nov 22, 2006 11:04:46 AM
I disagree with "always" answering Leland. As my Grandmother always said to me, "wise men choose their battles". By answering every uneducated and uninformed viewpoint, you are in essence validating it and confirming its truth. Eminem is trash and you will waste your time and energy attempting to address EVERY feeble attempt at stirring up controversy by him and those like him.
Posted by: forreal | Nov 22, 2006 11:38:23 AM
Why is this newsworthy?
Posted by: soulbrotha | Nov 22, 2006 11:42:01 AM
"...in essence validating it and confirming its truth."
By lending a voice to oppose a view one actually validates and confirms that view? Um, what?
Posted by: Josh | Nov 22, 2006 11:42:53 AM
"By lending a voice to oppose a view one actually validates and confirms that view?"
Oh great, I remember you. That's not what I said/wrote. Perhaps you should re-read (learn to read) what I actually communicated. Now I'm going to follow my "Grams" advice.

I'm not sure I agree with that Leland. "Silence equals assent" is the principle by which people actively seek to curb gay rights, promote their ideas of a "moral" life etc etc. How is that good?
Posted by: EireKev | Nov 22, 2006 11:53:25 AM
Elton was more relevant to the gay community when he was in the closet. Now he's simply an embarrassment to himself and our community.
Posted by: Brook | Nov 22, 2006 11:58:48 AM
Eminem is a classic closet case if ever there was one.
Posted by: closet case | Nov 22, 2006 12:00:35 PM
Yawn. What a total fucking bore. I mean, does anybody really even give a shit about this guy or his ignorant opinions?
Posted by: JR | Nov 22, 2006 12:20:24 PM
Look... it's the same old thing I saw growing up in the neighborhood. Loud-talking macho boys always spouting some "fag" foolywang, usually when they're hangin' with their boys. Then, when they see you by yourself, suddenly they're all sweet and seductive...finally, alone in the dark, they turn over and say "stick it in." Different place, same story: Emmie has had plenty of dark meat, I'm sure.

endearing....perhaps, he should visit some of the faith-based charities that i've met on the road....for some, he could sing their anthem. many were not the most accepting bunch while working for their "cause".

Calinexus,
You know how tight Em is with Dre. You know how tight Dre was with Eazy E.... and we all know Eazy E was on the down low.
Connect the dots and you have a white boy protesting a bit too much I think.

i've always liked the tune and beat of his songs, but the lyrics and his trailer-trash skanky looks prevented me from ever taking him remotely serious... never saw eight mile... never downloaded a song.

As is all too frequently manifested on Towleroad, as in life, too many are extrapolating to the world their own narrow reality. St. Judy knows there is no one more opinionated here than moi, but I try to acknowledge that not only do others have different opinions but that they might be in the majority [which, of course, is different than being "right" but....].
MILLIONS "give a shit about this guy [and] his ignorant opinions." And most of them are the very age range that are most impressionable, particularly when what is being "modeled" for them reinforces preexisting attitudes, especially those which involve negating those who don'g "fit in" with the herd. Most people involved in antigay physical assaults are in the demographic of his largest audience, who have made him a millionaire several times over. Most are in the age group that we need to turn into gay-friendly voters if we ever hope to flush away their parents/grandparents legalized homophobia.
Viewed contextually, Mel Gibson's drunken anti-Semitic meltdown; Michael Richard's repugnant racist rant pale by comparison. But Eminem will AGAIN get away with it because it's just "freedom of expression" and because it's still OK to hate "fags."
Posted by: Leland | Nov 22, 2006 1:22:46 PM
Leland, all very true. But changing attitudes of the very impressionable minds of this idiot's fan base is really beyond the scope of my interest. The fact that a high profile gay person like Elton would get on stage with and endorse this hater only serves to prove that even homos think its OK to hate fags. I'm just kind of over it. If these kids want to be dumb enough to go through life hating and listening to and believeing in morons like Eminem, then I say "good luck with that". Hopefully we just don't cross paths.
Posted by: JR | Nov 22, 2006 1:34:17 PM
FORREAL, "Pay them no mind, they don't have any." was what my Grandmother's sister always said. But she was talking about the one on one run in with an ahole, not the type that this douche bag is making. I have to once again agree with LELAND on this one. Too many kids are hearing and reinforcing the homophobia being fed to them at home.
Meanwhile I have to agree with Mark M here. Maybe he's sending a signal to Elton John, that he wants him to do him up the ass til he dies. I'm all for it, maybe even take Elton with him.

I'm still reeling from the description of Eminem as an "artist."

OK, why does someone always have to connect the dots this way? On the one hand, we say that straight men who are friends with gays are cool. Then on the other hand, if a straight guy like Dre is friends with a gay guy like the late Easy E, Dre had to have been gay.
Why can't we just focus on Marshall Mathers being a homophobic asswipe instead instead of trying to "connect the dots"? Isn't that kind of logic self-defeating in that it pushes a stereotype that the only "straight" men who are friends with gay guys are guys aren't really straight? Doesn't that just help to alienate any straight guys from forming friendships with gay guys because of the inferred sex?
Mathers is a scumbag. Go after his sorry, scrawny head, don't drag in someone who was a straight friend of a gay guy.
