Gay Barbie Nativity Raises Stink at Italian Parliament
Two Italian parliamentarians, Bruno Mellano and Donatella Poretti, raised a furor in Italy after they placed pairs of embracing Barbies and Kens next to a traditional Christian nativity scene in order to make a statement about gay marriage.
Several parliamentarians spoke out about the gesture. A statement from the opposition conservative Forza Italia party blasted the dolls: "This is a vulgar and unacceptable double attack against both a (national) institution as well as a religious symbol." A communist parliamentarian called it "a grave political error".
Pope Benedict also released a statement: "Has anyone seen my Barbies?"
