Jim McGreevey Joins Larry Kramer in Times Square Protest

Protest1_2

Former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey (above, right) joined Larry Kramer (below in T-shirt and hat) and his ACT UP "army" of approximately 60 activists and veterans today at noon at the Times Square military recruiting station to protest remarks made by Joint Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff General Peter Pace and the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

We sent Towleroad correspondent Dave G. to cover the activity. Kramer called for a new "gay army" in remarks at New York's Gay & Lesbian Center on Tuesday night, and announced plans to picket Times Square. McGreevey, who attended that event, promised to show up at the protest, and did.

National Gay & Lesbian Task Force Executive Director Matt Foreman and Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum were both arrested for civil disobedience.

  1. Cyd,

Speaking as a former Republican (and I am not being flippant here), my affiliation with that party ended not long after I came to the realization that there was nothing wrong with being gay and I came out.

I could no longer consider myself Republican when so many right wing Fundamentalists and politicians (all Republican) were saying my lifestyle was immoral and that I was a threat to children and to family values.

I am still confused on how you balance your notion that being gay is ok with affiliation to a party - populated by many religious conservatives - who not only think that your lifestyle is immoral but that you should not be allowed to enjoy tax benefits or adopt children?

I am not one who will shoot you down if you say that you're trying to turn the tide away from those religious zealots in your party. Fantastic, and more power to you... I just can't understand why liberals bother you more than fag-hating zealots? As I've pointed out to other conservatives on this blog, it just seems to me that liberals are the lesser of two evils. If you don't agree, then please explain why.

As I said, I'm not being flippant or confrontational here.

  2. Too bad this thread was highjacked with arguments left vs right.

What I retain is that some very brave men and women took it to the streets of NY to voice their anger at what is starting to shape in the question of gay rights in the country.

And I believe we have to demonstrate in ALL WAYS we can that we will not be intimidated by the powerlful or the famous; and if anyone should give themselves the liberty to publicly condemn our lives and families, they should expect a statement back about them. Fair dealing.

And I'll say this: if you're homosexual in the US 2007, observing everything that's going on, and you're not angry - then I'd love to know what your secret is..

  3. Cyd, I can see how one could view Ann Coulter as a comedienne.

But I believe you are smart enough to know that many people out there believe the garbage that she is spewing.

And promoting her books on a web site at least partially dedicated to a gay man's life only encourages controversy. But I guess you want that. You seem to love the "I am gay, but I don't fit in with the gays" persona. Good luck with that.

  4. JMG, he's just a homosexual. He's not socially and politically identified as a gay man. Just a run of the mill, ambivalent homo.

  5. Why are we all getting so upset over Cyd? He is contributing to our cause by running OutSports and he is entitled to his opinion on politics even if the majority of us feel that he is wrong. I personally don't see how anyone could be Republican but it has a lot more to do with them being the party of Big Business, Corporatism, and Alexander Hamilton than with the few bones they throw to the religious right from time to time. Also I don't like the Dems either but truthfully both parties support big government now just in different ways and if you don't believe me than why has the government grown more in the past six years than during the entire Clinton era. Also both parties support militarism abroad it's just that the Dems prefer to use it more at a later time than the Repubs; just remember who started Vietnam.
I am a libertarian and if they aren't available then I vote Green. Will they get elected maybe or maybe not, but at least I don't feel guilty for voting for the lesser of two evils anymore instead I vote my conscience and if everyone in America did that then we would have a much better country. I want to see real change in this country and neither the Repubs or the Dems are going to give us that. So let him support who he wants to support.
The others are right here though Cyd supports a party that currently supports active discrimination against gay people. The Dems may not actively support us and our causes but they aren't actively discriminating against us either. If the Republican party had its way sodomy would still be illegal and they would be trying to pass more legislation against gays if only to appease their voter base more thoroughly. If the Dems ever get a backbone the Republicans will be in trouble.
