Leonardo DiCaprio Working with Icebergs Again

Leonardo_dicaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio is back on the ice for the "Green Issue" of Vanity Fair. This time his co-star is not Kate Winslet but Knut, the Berlin Zoo's born-in-captivity polar bear cub. The last time we saw DiCaprio clinging to an iceberg the situation was Hollywood from an entirely fictional perspective. Icebergs have driven DiCaprio's career, onscreen and off.

The Annie Leibowitz shoot did have its bit of Hollywood "magic". While DiCaprio was shot at the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, in southeast Iceland, Knut was shot against a green screen in Berlin and inserted into the image.

Knut has become an international star and symbol for the plight of polar bears since his public debut on March 23, with much credit to YouTube.

I just hope that with all the glamming up of global warming, the message doesn't become lost in the trendy landscape. But if this is the only way it's going to grab the public's attention, I'm all for it.

  1. I wonder how much jet fuel was burned getting Leo, Annie, and crew to Iceland. And how many issues will be recycled rather than trashed.

When Ladies Home Journal does a green issue, it'll be worth it for bringing the issue to a much-needed audience. I think Vanity Fair's green issue is glossy feedback loop of preaching to the choir.

  2. Puh-leeeze. Of the 12 groups of polar bears in the Arctic, 11 are stable or growing. One, repeat one, is declining in population. Don't buy all the crap out there, dude.

  3. I thought I'd graduated from "pretty men" to older "handsome men." DiCprio brings me back to pretty. He's adorable--probably smells good too.

  4. Even the hard core environmentalists have to admit that Knut has given them one Hell of a leg up with the public attention! There is no person, male/female/gay/straight, who can look at that bear's face (Knut's, not Leo's, hehe) and not turn into a big baby-talking mess.

  5. I'm not sure efforts like these are helpful. Ultimately, they reinforce the notion that global warming is primarily about natural conservation, which is in turn portrayed as a pastime of the elite. Global warming is now a human survival issue, and a huge collective action problem that concerns everyone. 21st century vanity pieces like this (complete with green-screened wildlife) are pointless and possibly counterproductive.

  6. Matt is so right. Leo shoulda stayed in LA and shot his photo against a green screen, too.

  7. yes, no one should ever travel again. i mean really, isn't most business doable over the phone and isn't your backyard or patio the perfect vacation spot!?!?

Do you think, perhaps, they went on a flight that would have gone there anyways?!?! people do fly to iceland on a regular basis.

Oh i forgot, attacking the messenger is the only thing people have in the face of something they don't want to accept. Yes, everyone is lying to us all, they want to destroy everything with the end result being the end of capitalism. yup, thats it. they don't love capitalism too with the money it has brought them. They're such horrible people for wanting us to try, just a little, to be better stewarts of the place our children and grandchildren will inherit. So selfish and needy this "environmentalists" are.

  8. For traveling all the way to Iceland for that shot it looks incredibly fake and uninteresting.

  9. Oh, I was just going to mention myself that I bet gay-hating John McCain and closet queen Lindsey "Lohan" Graham burned up way more fuel for their ridiculous photo op in Iraq the other day.

And Leonardo didn't demand so much security that 4 other US military were killed the same day due to the 100 armed men, three helicopters and two gunships that were taken away from other posts to protect gay-hating McCain and Lindsey "Lohan" Graham.

So I would say the horrible cost of McCain's photo op was a lot more than the cost of Leonardo's, wouldn't you?

  10. Sorry, Stony, but would that your image of the sensitivity of all humankind were accurate. However, if you'll go to the link below, you'll see just one of the stories about people who wanted him killed because he's an orphan, as well as learn some other ugly facts about zoos. I have mixed feelings about them myself, but firmly believe that there must be an alternative to purposely, cold-bloodedly killing an otherwise healthy animal.

And, speaking of coldblooded and the environment, yesterday the sane, non-puppet

While I wouldn't literally put her down, I think Annie Liebowitz is vastly-overrated. I've seen some creative photos by her, but virtually none of them are among the photos that have made her a millionaire. Take away her assistants, props, and huge budgets and she would be hard pressed to come up with a single photo to equal the majesty and eloquence that, for instance, Dorothea Lange could achieve with nothing but a camera and, e.g., a dustbowl migratory worker and her starving children.

  11. Should have read: And, speaking of cold-blooded and the environment, yesterday the sane, non-puppets-of-the-Right-Wing justices on the Supreme Court bitch slapped Bush all the way into the 21st Century regarding the Clean Air Act. I’ll drink to that!

  12. I really don't understand all this global warming craze. It seems like I hear about it most with politicians than from scientist and other experts. Oh, well if it is or isn't occuring, I'll be long dead before the planet burns up.

    Posted by: matt | Apr 3, 2007 1:36:42 PM

  13. Yes, Matt, and you will be stupid till then, too.

The politicians you listen to denying global warming are -- surprise -- the same ones who spread Republican anti-gay hate.

The scientists that you are blissfully ignorant of are the ones trying to save a bit of the planet for later generations, you of course have just said you are to selfish to care. Typical self-hating gay Republican. Thanks for never disappointing us.

  14. Bambambam,

You crack me up. I'm not self-hating. I'm happy with who I am. I love myself. I do vote both Republican and Democrat. I vote based on the candidate. I don't understand why you have such contempt for anyone who has a different opinion than yours. It's one thing to disagree respectfully and another thing to call someone stupid. Obviously there are two schools of thought on global warming. The comments here reflect that. Stop being so angry and let's have a discussion without name calling. I at least have the guts to put my real email address in the link. I'm assuming tttt@aoll.com is not real.

  15. I thought this topic was all about Leonardo DiCaprio's extraordinary beauty, not about some shallow shit like global warming.

Posted by: Derrick from Philly | Apr 3, 2007 4:50:59 PM

  16. "Obviously there are two schools of thought on global warming."

No, there aren't, Matt. The truth and a well funded lie are not two different "viewpoints" on the same issue. Since they couldn't get away with completely denying evidence of climate change, big energy chose to create the illusion of "debate" where none existed in the greater scientific community.

    You're wrong.

    Posted by: nuflux | Apr 3, 2007 5:15:54 PM

  17. You just said you don't understand this global warming "craze."

So just STFU about it while the rest of us find out from the scientists. Mm-kay? You don't care about it because you'll be dead, so just STFU. I don't need to convince a troll who wants to show everyone else he doesn't care. I'm just pointing out how stupid and trollish you are to the rest of the readers.

    Posted by: bambambam | Apr 3, 2007 5:43:25 PM

  18. So the USA is critized and bashed about not cutting down on power while the rest of the world (China, Russia, etc...) continue unabated burning fossil fuels and other shit. They do not have "concerned citizens", so they can grow their economies any way they want and we can't. Thank you Mr. "Neverwas" Al Gore.

  19. I'm glad that Knut is still alive, after those crazy animal rights activists tried to have him killed!

Their claim that in the wild he'd have been left to die was rediculous, considering the it was born in captivity and its mother was a performing bear.

    Posted by: lambman | Apr 3, 2007 7:26:24 PM

  20. that bear was photoshopped in and it looks ridiculous.

    Posted by: rascal | Apr 3, 2007 7:58:06 PM

  21. Actually Nuflux and Bambambam there are more than one view on the causes of Global Warming. In fact there are 3 main ones. One is put forth by big business, another by independent scientists(those not getting funding from industry or goverments, or who's carreer's depend on a certain outcome in the debate) and the majority group of scientists who's funding comes from Global Warming grants from goverment or Enviromental groups and would be looking for work if they are proved wrong.

While all 3 groups agree Global Warming is taking place, the debate is about **why**.
And calling people **ignorant, stupid, a**holes etc. isn't the best way to win them over to your way of thinking.

I'm betting that Leo left a much smaller carbon footprint for this promotional shoot than Al Gore does on any given day at his home.
