Tennessee Teens Charged with Hate Crime for Vandalism

Authorities in McMinnville, Tennessee, a rural town approximately halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga, have charged three teens with a hate crime after they apparently confessed to spraying a gay man's house with paintballs. They said they targeted Neal Anthony because he is gay.

Anthony, whom I posted about the other day, found his home covered in anti-gay graffiti that said "all gays go to hell" and "fags deserve to die" just days after the paintball incident, in which he said his home was peppered with more than 80 paintball rounds.

Police aren't releasing the names of those charged, as they are juveniles (two are 15, one is 16), and it's unclear whether they are connected to the anti-gay writings discovered on the side of Anthony's historic 1851 home.

Anthony has asked that they clean up the damage.

  1. Oh, small-town-hell. Hopefully, the 'minors' will learn and not grow up to be like their bigoted, backwater wingnut parents, who obviously have taught them that a gay person can be harassed with impunity. Until now?

  2. I have a very close personal friend who was born and raised in the small town where this happened. One of the victims may be his cousin. It really brought the reality of homophobic crime home to him in a very personal way.

Sometimes we don't even realize how few degrees of separation stand between us and a DIRECT connection with an act homophobic violence, bullying and/or intimidation.

Hopefully none of us have to be the direct victims of homophobic violence or intimidation to take it seriously or to be motivated to challenge it.

  4. Not releasing their names, eh? Then how about the parents? Embarrass the hell out of them too.

  5. I am just glad they were caught! McMinnville is such a great place to BE FROM! Never will I live there again! Good luck to them...they are going to need it. I suppose I am happy with the speed the police worked though. This was something I was afraid that would get swept under the rug. And yes, Zeke, this did bring reality a little too close to home my friend. Wow...Thank God I got out!!!!!
