Chelsea Reveals its Hateful Underbelly

Chelsea_sign

Towleroad reader Dean Kurth sent us a photo he shot while taking his morning run.

He writes: "As Pride banners are being readied for a month-long display on 8th Avenue in New York's Chelsea district, less than a block away we have this disturbing image. The 'artist' who chalked the word 'faggot' onto this 19th Street billboard clearly wanted to send a message to the neighborhood's many gay residents. The defaced poster hangs just around the corner from several of 9th Avenue's gay owned stores, salons and the ever-popular Billy's bakery."

Some have heard about an increase in gay-related assaults in the area. As Hell's Kitchen becomes the new Chelsea, is Chelsea becoming the old Hell's Kitchen?

ADDENDUM: Commenters note that the ad is a promo for Kyle XY and the sexuality of the show's star, Matt Dallas, has been the subject of speculation. Perhaps a message of backlash against Dallas...

  1. I'm convinced that most of the time, the people writing these words just want to hear what they sound like out loud. Like the urge to shout in church. Dangerous words titillate.

If a gay man is physically attacked, he should fight like hell. We're men. Many of us are muscular and strong. Time to think in terms of doing some damage.

  3. I think you might be wrong on this one. I think the word is referring to the actor Matt Dallas who plays Kyle XY on abc family. The posters are a promotion for the show and Dallas is rumored to be gay. I think whoever wrote that may be upset at Dallas for hiding his sexuality. Just a thought.

  4. I hate Gay Pride. Not because I'm not prideful, simply because it's nothing more than a circuit-sponsored event that truly does little for supporting tollerance among all groups. The leather daddys, the fat chicks on harleys, the gay asian queens, the Splash go-go bartenders. Yep, that's me-------NOT!!

I'd say the majority of gay men and women don't identify with the circus that goes on each and every gay pride in New York City.

Oh, as for the defacing of pride posters, why not? In your face sexuality (gay or straight) deserves to be vandalized.

  5. Anonymous, you have an interesting point.

IT'S CALLED GRAFFITI!!! Probably scrawled out by some drunk teenager(s) BIG F-ING DEAL!!!

    GET OVER IT!!!

  9. that new york...such a hot bed of ignorant, intolerant, hate-filled, religious, bigoted, redneck, bible thumping, stupid, homophobes. poor new york gays. they should all move somewhere safe. like the south.

  10. Those arent Pride posters though. They're promotion for the new season of Kyle XY on the ABC Family channel. lol.

  11. I do not see how this is a "story" or worth thinking about in any way whatever.

So an idiot defaced property, possibly because he doesn't like gay people. Who cares?

I, too, hate "gay pride," but not because it's been camped up. Sexuality is not chosen and so is nothing to be proud of. If widespread "normalcy" about homosexuality is what you're after, you'll get it by being open and honest about your sexual preference, not by dwelling on what other people think about it.

Mr. Towle, I dislike the tone on your blog of "force it down the throat" of people who disagree. Let them disagree! Perhaps it would be more productive for you to argue against our Democratic system of law, which permits at any time the irrational bigotry toward gays that you hate to be LEGALIZED. Without the law to back it up, a person's anti-gay beliefs are worthless as far as any gay man, or any rational person, is concerned.

I like your hot men features, but I think your political views are totally misguided.

  12. Speaking of Matt Dallas though, has anybody seen the movie he was in "Camp Daze (Camp Slaughter)"? Its quite possibly the worst movie ever created even though he does play a gay guy in it. Rent it if you want to see a movie that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Also, on rumors that he's gay in real life. He hangs out with Kathy Griffin..Hello!

  13. Speaking of journalism, did you ever correct that article you posted about being able to see the guys testicles on Greys Anatomy even though it was obviously the guys head like I said it was?

  14. I don't know if I would call this to be directed at the gay businesses in this area. I agree with anon that it is probably more pointed at Matt Dallas of Kyle XY (or as I like to call it Kyle KY) who is rumored to be gay. Either way it's graffiti and needs to be removed and someone prosecuted if the perp is ever found which is highly unlikely. I believe Mr. Kurth who submitted this may have not have known of the Matt Dallas angle to this story.

  15. Unforth I'm not in NY this week. Why doesn't someone just go up to this piece of art, and add under the scrawled graffiti...

    ...are better at sex.

That would piss someone off. Now that is expression.

  16. Um, I think Andy was simply bringing up the question of gay-related assaults and whether Chelsea is becoming more like Hell's Kitchen was and vice versa. I don't see how that gets interpreted as a "political view". It is the reader that sent in the photo that made the comments. It's reporting, plain and simple- why get up in Andy's face about it and say it's a political view. At least the "O" in the graffiti was a happy face. You guys are taking this way overboard by attacking.

  17. What Brent said. Andy is only a conduit. Don't blame the provider. The stuff you read here is available to everyone-Andy just puts it together for us. Everyone should thank him for that.

  18. Hmm...

Something about this is off. It is an ad for Kyle XY. And there has been alot of controversy about the actor playing many gay roles and working his way out of the closet, but now that he's getting a name for himself - wiggling write back in.

I'm not defending the use of the word. (It was done in chalk, though?)

But please notice that the "O" in faggot has a smiley face in it? What angry person confronting the fears of his own sexuality by scrawling an ugly word in such a cowardly way stops to put a smiley face?

    Seems off to me.

  19. I must be going crazy. Doesn't anyone else notice the backward f and the mixture of lower case and upper case letters. Was this done by a child?

  20. It's a crayon scribbling on a wall. Unless it's your wall, and you have to clean it up, who the fuck cares?

    Posted by: Scott | May 31, 2007 3:42:47 PM

  21. "In your face sexuality (gay or straight) deserves to be vandalized."

So you get upset by images from Carnival in Rio, correct? Daytime Soaps bother you too, right? And I assume you get as irate each time you pass a magazine stand and have to look at the cover of Maxim.

'cause all of those are pretty "in your face" with their heterosexuality.

Something, though, tells me you really don't get AS upset. Hmmm, wonder why?

  22. In your face sexuality deserves equal time as all the in your face violence that exists and is ENCOURAGED/PROMOTED in this fucked up culture. Maybe if MORE in your face sexuality existed then men and women in today's society wouldn't be so ashamed of their bodies and wouldn't be so freaked out by a flaccid penis or sagging boobs?

    Posted by: ShawnSF | May 31, 2007 3:59:30 PM

  23. yeah, I am thinking one of our own sprayed that on the Kyle XY posters in protest of the huge closet cases denials despite you tube footage of his real life SUPER DUPER nellie personality traits.

  24. Geez BRYAN G. - what a troll. Firstly, those aren't pride posters. Secondly, the point of the posters is not sex, but the fact that the TV character DOES NOT HAVE A BELLY BUTTON! Hello!

The showing of skin is not always sexual, except perhaps in your perverted mind. Maybe it's your brain that needs the graffiti.

    Posted by: Gregg | May 31, 2007 6:33:48 PM

  25. Bryan G. is a stupid faggot.
