David Hyde Pierce Nudged Out of the Closet

While a People magazine cover may be the de rigeur method for celebrities to come out these days, some take a more subtle approach, such as burying the news in the 16th paragraph of an AP profile.

DhpAfterElton notes that Pierce, heretofore reticent to discuss his sexuality, has his information offered up in a recent story on the actor:

"He worked at Playwrights Horizons, the Public Theater, Shakespeare in the Park and a lot of regional theaters such as the Guthrie in Minneapolis, Chicago's Goodman and Long Wharf in New Haven, Conn. Pierce got to Los Angeles in the early 1990s when his partner, actor-writer-producer Brian Hargrove, wanted to write for television."

While this is probably not earth-shattering news, it's still worth noting that Mr. Hyde Pierce has broken out of that glass closet.

  1. I'm pretty sure that Mahoney is not gay. There is an interview with him where he states that he has never been married and it is maybe his one regret.

As for DHP, I loved him on Frasier. I thought his infatuation with Daphne was wonderful. Quite frankly, I'm glad the reaction to gay actors is becoming "And??"

  2. MARK M - I don't understand your point. If Butler was on a panel as an openly gay actor, doesn't that make him "out"?

In any case, I remember him being out, doing interviews about being gay, and still being on Frasier. I was thrilled at the time, so it sticks in my mind.

  3. To clarify, I was making the point that Dan Butler didn't come out while on Frasier and then get fired. He was out before he got the Frasier gig.

  4. Mahoney is family and has been quietly out throughout his career in Regional Theatre.

  5. I've always had a major crush on DHP despite his twink-iness, but alas he's probably a one man man. I'd love to get behind his "Curtains". I love that he thanked his lover when he won the Emmy.

As for gorgeous & hunky Dan Bulter, he was fired because he broke his contract due to his rightful protest of that evil, vile radio witch Dr Laura Schlessinger; whose show was also produced by Paramount.

As for the characters I am sure that Roz would have eaten muff if her man du soir asked her to.

  6. God, we are rehashing all this again? Can anyone point to any concrete evidence in support of when Dan came out, when DHP first came out, when Mahoney came out, etc? Several months ago everyone was certain they were correct, but not everyone could be obviously. Now John Spencer is a big shock (if true). I see on Wiki he supported AIDS awareness and nothing else.

  7. John Spencer? What about his companion and live in girlfriend, Patricia Mariano? The one they interviewed about his sudden death.
She was with him at the 2005 SAG awards.
