Manny Ramirez and Julian Tavarez: Dugout Buddies
This clip is from the Red Sox/Twins match-up earlier this month. Can't a guy give his buddy a good head rub without being mocked?

what? it is funny...i think most people would have laughed at that...why knock someone for finding humor in a silly situation...

I posted this a few weeks ago and got some interesting comments on the reaction of the announcers. What does your audience think?

So cute!!

Gender Treachery!! HomoTerrified! The announcers must make it clear that they are straight as they police the contact of male skin against male skin.
Barbara Krueger could have a field day with these images.

If it were two women, they would have wanted them to take it much further. A-holes those idiots.

Sorry, but I thought it was pretty fucking hilarious. He wouldn't stop rubbing his head!!! It just looked kind of silly, especially in the dugout. I don't know that even as a gay guy I would let a friend keep rubbing my head like that... unless of course there was going to be some payoff later. :)

It's both cute and funny at the same time. Considering how superstitious baseball players are I was thinking he was doing it for good luck! I've noticed hispanic men are not shy about physical affection even if they are str8.

I just returned from Turkey where it is completly natural for men to show affection for one another publicly. Many walk the streets arm-in-arm. It was very refreshing. Rights of women in that country have continued to move in a positive direction and gays have moved further into the mainstream in a very short amount of time. (The first openly gay bar opened in Istanbul 14 years ago) There is so much we could learn from their example.

kind of ironic that julian tavarez was involved, because when he was with the cubs, i kind of remember him making some disparaging, homophobic remarks about fans at some point. does anyone else have a better recollection of this?

red sox suck

he had his arm around him also..but latinos do not have a problem with body contact..I thought it was funny & sweet. The commentators thought they were looking at the mating season happenning of the rare tutu birds

the head rubbing, constant though it was, made the arm around the player especially interesting and cute and funny. the announcers while probably pretty old-school did get a good laugh..so what...it was funny.

i'm latino. and i've found that latino males not born in the u.s. have different sensibilities regarding male/male affection. perhaps it is the hyper-hetero ethos of american culture that prevents american men from expressing natural feelings toward one another. sad. the head rubbing and embrace were really cute, though, if over-long.

I love Manny Ramirez. I think he is so cute. If you know anything about him, he is know for his affectionate touching and rubbing. Manny hugs and gropes everyone on the team. I love Manny so much, I named my dog after him, because my dog humps everything. The announcers found the humor in Manny's actions. If you're a Red Sox fan, this is nothing unusal for Manny. I love the way he has his arm around Julian. It's like their on a date.

I think this just shows how this country is so HOMOPHOBIC about one man touching another man in public. I think that these 2 announcers would have drooled all over themselves if it was two women who were doing this and then they would have probably whipped out there stuff if they would have kissed. I mean come on AMERICA. WAKE UP!!!

Cody, You're an idiot. If you know anything about sports or better yet, anything about Manny Ramirez, you would know that this is his personality. There is nothing homophobic about it or the announcers. Cody, I know you probably see homophobia in everything. Cody, please let us know when we can laugh at something silly. I'm sick and tired of the homophobia police cracking down on harmless fun and banter.

James,
It was in the bullpen in a game against the Giants. Tavarez was heckled by some fans and talked about the "fags in SF." That's not exact, but it's more or less the idea.
He gave a very, very half-assed apology, or rather the team issued one. He's had "anger issues" elsewhere. Or maybe I should say "mouth issues" elsewhere, I seem to recall.

fyi -- Manny grew up in washington heights. It's not like he's straight from DR or anything. And couching all Latinos together is a bit unfair. I don't think Dominicans and Argentinians are inherently similar in their attitudes toward male affection. If anything I would expect DR to be pretty homophobic just because it's in the Caribbean. I think this is truly a case of Manny being Manny. And it's fucking adorable.

Thank you, for your insight, NIC, and thanks, ANON, for the facts about Manny's bio.
I thought Manny's show of masculine affection was beautiful and pure(as Tennessee Williams would say). I wish I had some handsome Latino to pet me. Hell, I'd settle for a regular old American now--with Manny's muscles, of course.

Am I the only one who thinks, all talk of homophobia and showing affection asside, its still a weird thing to do? Who rubs somebody's head like that? I would be creeped out if my own boyfriend did it, in public or in privet.
