Cindy Adams on Larry Craig and Homosexuality

Gossip columnist Cindy Adams has a few words about Larry Craig in her Post column today, and they perked up our ears:

Cindyadams"I have nothing for this ruined ex- politico ex-senator ex-nice family man Larry Craig. Never met him. Never heard of him before. I don't care a fig about him. I don't care about Idaho either. I don't even know where that is, other than you get to Chicago and make a left. Aside from a baked potato topped with sour cream, who-the-hell ever makes mention of Idaho? So, I have no horse in this race. It's just that in my limited, not-very-smart view, his guilt is primarily hypocrisy. The rest of the crime, if in fact Craig is gay, is of our making. The tawdry solicitation leaves us partly to blame. Draping homosexuality in shame is what forces the weak to hide and lie and rail against it publicly in order to cover themselves privately. A guess would be he spoke and voted and campaigned against it in fear for himself. To draw a curtain around his own being. Those Enron guys probably didn't start out bilking billions. They started small. A little here, a bit more there. It's always the first step. Suddenly you're in it up to your eyeballs. Same with this shivering little scared mess of a man. Terrified of his own self, he early on made one statement. Then maybe had to back it up. Then he maybe enlarged it. All in mortal dread that his innermost voice might make itself heard. Possibly someday, if all of us, each with our own demons, could wash away the stain of whatever tints our sexuality, this pathetic soul would never have picked a bathroom for a bedroom."

  1. Wow. Very smart lady. Now, if she could knock some sense into Arlen Spector...maybe the Senate should have a mandatory retirement age.

  2. She gets it. 100% Ms. Adams. 100%. Respect.

  3. WOW..Who knew Cindy could actually strings words together and write a beautifully constructed, thoughtful piece like that? And she's so right.

  4. I've never thought twice about Cindy Adams before, but this was excellent--more thoughtful and reasoned that 300 other op-eds on the subject. Kudos to her!

  5. Thanks so much for this...I don't read the Post because it the worst kind of judgemental tabloidism, and many times homophobic. But this is simple and to the point....thanks again!

  6. Well, I never gave a "fig" about Cindy Adams. But who knew she could string a sentence together as beautifully as Iris Murdoch or Don Delillo? That, my friends, is writing.

  7. never knew Cindy Adams to write anything of consequence... till now. hers is the absolute position on this story.
    kudos to Cindy !!

  8. wow. just wow. i make a point of NOT buying the post. my 25 cents withheld or whatever it costs now is my way of saying to murdoch 'fuck you.'

and i won't start buying it, either. but i have to say cindy adams knocked this one clear out of the park. so much that is wrong summed up on a few clear, direct sentences. that's good writing - and from a gossip columinist. only in new york kids, only in new york.

  13. Cindy really needs to ask Miss South Carolina for one of those "map" things, so she and other US Americans can see where Idaho is located.

  14. I guess I'm completely out of touch. I've never heard of this woman before.

Whoever she is, she knows the score.

I'm an instant Cindy Adams fan.

HOMERT@COX.NET, it isn't that she doesn't know where Idaho is. She clearly knows that it's somewhere "left of Chicago". It's just that she doesn't CARE to know where, precisely, Idaho is. It's not an issue of geography as much as it is an issue of apathy.

  15. DAAAAAAAAAAAAMN! Right on, sister! I have been saying the same thing, although not as eloquently, for a long time.

  16. Wow, Cindy! Who woulda thunk that such wisdom could come from the gossip columnist of a skanky, racist piece-of-shit rag like the Post? I doff my hat to you, madame!

  19. "Aside from a baked potato topped with sour cream, who-the-hell ever makes mention of Idaho?"

Well, that's harsh. I mean, there's also the Aryan Nation/Neo-Nazi's there and all the loser "OMG! The black helicopters are coming! OMG" nuts holed up with enough guns to stock a small army. That's the diversity of Idaho, Ms. Adams!

  20. Well this is shocking. Cindy's said things previously that sounded bitchy and homophobic. I remember her whining that there's too many gay shows on TV, and do people have to apologize for being heterosexual now. Now that sounds terrible taken at face value, but if it was coming from a friend, like she certainly sounds like here, that puts it into a whole new light. Now it sounds to me like she was just acting catty with some gay friends, harmless, something Kathy Griffin might say tongue-in-cheek.

  21. While her words about homosexuality may strike all the right notes the rest of her statement makes me think she's not too bright. She doesn't know where Idaho is? Maybe she needs to get out of Manhattan on occasion.

  23. This gurl, Miss Larry Craign, is a mess:

First, he hits on policeman in a public restroom in a busy airport.

Then he gets caught and pleads guilty despite having three months to ponder his plea.

Then he says that plea is a mistake.

Then he says he is going to resign.

Then he starts to change his mind.

Then he leaves a message (outlining his political strategy) on the wrong cell phone: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/09/05/craig-leaves-message-disc_n_63126.html

    Gurl, you need some meds...fast!

  24. The only reason why the NY Post is worth reading. The ONLY reason. Cindy Adams is one, smart, intelligent, opinionated woman whose honesty has been a breath of fresh air over the many years she has been writing her column. Thanks, Cindy. We all should send her a dozen roses.

  26. dear andy....
this is hilarious....the story, the site, the inane aspects of summer in new york....just as the hypocrisy of so much after being away from the extremities of pockets of culture and anti-culture and anti-matter....yet, what i've seen gay men come to accept is baffling, if i'd not seen how much advertising and other absolute crap is being shoved down their gullets on a daily basis within the confined limitations of some semblance of urban existence with planning that is off-the-hook if not off the charts at times.

with all due respect, it makes me comprehend how you've allowed so much advertising on your site as well when i consider that i've been in touch for several years now. the changes -- both positive and negative -- perhaps the advertising goes with the latter, yet, a summer in the city, it's amazing but not surprising the crap that some people have embraced as a formative movement in a positive direction that isn't actually creating karma that will be ultimately very harsh, as it's nothing remotely close to a healthy garden. if any fag (or, maybe, a dyke) is remotely aware of contemporary history they'd maintain their awareness that a healthy seed (and soil) for the garden has nothing to do with mourning wet dream discharge in their underwear on the corner of 9th avenue and 14th street.

    take care.
