Oregon Gay Rights Foes Fail Again, This Time on Discrimination Law

Marilyn Shannon and her band of bigots have failed again to turn in the required amount of valid petition signatures, putting an end for now to efforts to halt a law that would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation from going into effect on January 1st.

Shannon_oregonThe Register-Guard reports: “Anti-gay rights activists behind the push ended up with 53,875 valid signatures — not enough to meet the 55,179-signature threshold.”

Efforts to challenge Oregon’s domestic partner law failed last week for the same reasons.

Governor Ted Kulongoski spoke out about the results: “This is a landmark day for Oregon because it shows who we are as a state and as a people. Oregonians proved that they do not support discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. At the same time they showed they do support legal recognition of domestic partnerships between same-sex couples.”

Shannon remains undeterred, reiterating her plans to repeal the laws: “A million of us voted that a marriage is between a man and a woman. “Fifty-four legislators and the governor put these bills upon us.”
