Indianapolis Colts Accused of Producing Fake Crowd Noise

Manning

The Indianapolis Colts have been accused of enhancing the level of sound in the RCA Dome after an unusual noise was heard during the Colts-Patriots broadcast, which was then uploaded to YouTube. That unusual noise would be familiar to anyone who has heard a CD skip before. It can be heard at about the :30 second point in the clip above. In addition, the roar of the crowd comes to an abrupt, unnatural halt shortly thereafter.

The Colts claim the noise was made by the CBS production crew, and the NFL is standing behind them: "CBS has informed us that the unusual audio moment heard by fans during the Patriots-Colts game was the result of tape feedback in the CBS production truck and was isolated to the CBS broadcast. It was in no way related to any sound within the stadium and could not be heard in the stadium."

Of course, given the way things are going these days, who's to say he wasn't holding a fake news conference?

  1. I'm more inclined to believe the version of the story that the sound is feedback from the CBS truck. After all, I can't imagine that Tony Dungy is more concerned about crowd noise than he is about preventing gay men and women from enjoying the marriage rights.

  2. Yeah, it really is sound feedback. I've worked audio for similar events, and this happens when prefade audio kicks into post audio. No biggie, just a lone audio guy pushing the wrong button.

  3. Having several years of broadcast production to my name, you're hearing sound feedback issues. Kidnextdoor got nailed it on the head. Someone potted one audio input up before potting down another.

So... LET'S ALL MAKE CRAP OUT OF THIS. Good lord.

Do we need Al Gore to set folks straight?

  4. I wasn't there but I'm sure there was no need to enhance the crowd noise. It was probably one of the biggest football games of the season. I'm sure the crowd didn't need any help making noise.

  6. Who's kidding whom--it's all fake! The crowds, the announcers, the teams, everything!

  7. They weren't trying to enhance crowd noise just for the sake of it, it was a cheating type tactic so the Pats wouldn't be able to hear what plays were being called.

  8. Who cares if they enhance the crowd noise? "Sports" is just spectacle anyway. Britney doesn't sing, the President doesn't run his own administration...whatever.

  9. Why is this story even being posted on a gay website? Maybe it has something to do with how hard certain bloggers have been riding Tom Brady's jock lately. If it's a non-story, then why take up the space on the page with it? Towleroad usually handles all of its subjects in a informative, authoritative way, but if they're just going to play innuendo, that's only going to pull away from the legitimacy of their stories. The FEMA fake conference link is a pretty MASSIVE leap.

  10. Wow. Even when they win, they whine. Class... pure class.
