Toronto Maple Leafs and Jiri Tlusty Respond to Nude, 'Gay' Photos

Nineteen-year-old Toronto Maple Leaf rookie Jiri Tlusty, who told a Canadian gossip site "I am not gay or bi nothing" after the site published photos of him tonguing a companion alongside nude photos taken with a camera phone, issued a statement late Tuesday.

JiritlustySaid Tlusty: "I used poor judgment in this instance last season and I have learned a valuable lesson. It will not happen again and I have no further comment."

Maple Leafs general manager John Ferguson issued a statement as well: "Photographs were posted recently on the Internet without Jiri's knowledge or consent. He made a naive mistake as a teenager. It's a lesson in how something private can easily become very public in the Internet age. Hopefully it's a lesson that other people will learn from as well."

Maple Leafs coach Paul Maurice told SLAM Canada: "(Jiri's) handled it as well as anyone could handle it under the circumstances. It's an excellent learning experience for a young man. There has to be a new awareness (about new media). When you're in the public eye, you have to guard how you behave. I hope this young man can put this behind him quickly. I hope he has already."

  1. This is rather absurd. He doesn't have to explain himself for the supposed "tounging" photo or the self nudes. In this day and age of digital cameras there's few 19 year old males who don't have nude pictures of themselves. He should just smirk and say nothing.

  2. He might want to distinguish between the innocent kissing photos and the more indiscreet nude photos.

  3. It seems apparent to me that Jiri has already "put this behind him". 'This,' of course, refering to his "friend's" body parts. Too bad typical pre-coming out experimentation had to be so publicly exposed. That is likely to prolong the sealing of the closet door. Someone needs to remind these young people of the first rule of publicity in the Electronic Communication Age: never take a picture that you would not want to see on the Internet. Despite the letter from his lawyers, that picture will resurface and live for virtual eternity.

  4. Why does joking around and sticking his tongue out a a friend mean he's closeted, ANON? Your assumption that Jiri's already "put this behind him" (his friend's "body parts") is exactly why he's so paranoid in the first place. Lame-o homo wishful thinking... Leave the poor kid alone.

  5. I think this is ridiculous that we're even having this debate. It's 2007 and his sexuality shouldn't even be an issue. News flash...this just's ok to be gay now! They don't hang you by your balls anymore... (it's also ok to be straight...also not a hanging crime). Get over it! Find something useful to the war in Iraq...or I punishment... There are children starving to death in the world and veteran's sleeping on the streets, and you're worried about whether one of the Toronto Maple Leaf's players popped a woody on facebook or tongued his male friend! Seriously, devote your time to something more'll feel better about yourself when you're dead!

  6. I love all these athletes always doing things that they then feel the need to inform the public that they are not gay for doing. Shakespeare said it best: "Methinks thou doth protest too much".

  7. It's a shame that he treated this so seriously. He should of counterattacked with candor and humor. He would have been a hero, a pinup and a gossip-slayer in one fell swoop.

  8. The picture of him 'tonguing' his friend looks like the sort of picture that drunk, straight guys would take as a goof. Besides, his tongue does not appear to be touching his friend's body/face/tongue at all. So I think we are jumping to conclusions to assume that he is gay or bisexual. Though, after seeing his nude pics, I most definitely hope he is gay or bisexual and will one day find his way into my bedroom.

  9. I've analyzed the photo thoroughly and all I can say is, "I'd do him".

  10. Lol, JJ. Which photo?

On a more serious note, this makes me think of 2 things:

    1. Who cares? He didn't need to explain himself because he did absolutely, positively nothing wrong.

    2. If only more hot athletes would post naked pictures of themselves, not only would it not be a big deal, but the world would be a better place! LOL

  11. Not only are their tongues not touching, this is not the way two men kiss. Ever. This is how jocks fool around when they're drunk. Leave him be.

  12. Ryan - Either photo is fine with me but I'm kinda partial to the tongue one. And your absolutely right - we need more naked athletes!

  13. Jay, sexuality will always be an issue as long as there are people to whom one finds attraction. It doesn't matter what year it is, or how tolerant people are. The irony here is that people insisting the irrelevance of such stories, are the ones getting bent out of shape, and I don't know why.

  15. "He made a naive mistake as a teenager." What "naive mistake" is that? Expecting privacy?

See if we don't look shamefully at those who expose crap like this rather than the objects of the expose then an expectation of privacy will have no meaning.

I approve of the tongue photo.

  16. Whatever.

Like it would take a lot more action than that to turn me on. And like who hasn't done porn when they were 19? When I was 20 I already had a catalog and the photographer had been raided by the FBI (don't ask, it's shady).

  17. I think its hot!
people should be able to do whatever they want! There are just practically nothing we don't do these days anyways.
so what if he's a pro athlete, he's still human, and gay or not, Jiri should know himself.

  18. Wow, he looks so gay! That is far, far from act of innocent to me, hahaha ;-)
