Dan Savage's South Carolina Huckabee Tour
Bill Maher sent SLOG's Dan Savage down to South Carolina to check out why folks might be supporting Mike Huckabee. John McCain ended up taking the South Carolina primary with 33% of the vote to Huckabee's 30%.

Ouch. Being from SC, that was difficult to watch. Trust me me when I tell you-not all people from SC are that ignorant. The Upstate is pretty dumb, come down to the coast and around Aiken and you will find a much more liberal mindset.

I saw that the other night.
I am embaresed to say I had never heard of Savage before. I will now be paying attention to him.
The funniest part of the show was when that singer guy said "Have cows stopped fucking?" on the issue of cloned beef.
LOL

I <3 Dan Savage.

Dan Savage is awesome. He used to write a fantastic column called Savage Love....I think it was in OUT. He's a great ambassador from the gay community...smart and funny and quick and unapologetic without being a tiresome agitator or overly outré. America could truly bring this guy home to dinner. I always feel confident seeing him represent "me" in the media.

I also ♥ Dan Savage.
I have to agree with him that most Christians haven’t read the Bible and haven’t the slightest idea what it says other than a few quotes taken out of context.

Dan Savage still writes Savage Love, which is in papers across the country. He's also the editor of the Stranger, a Seattle paper which may be the best alternative weekly in the country.
Dan rocks!

Dan is one of my all time favorite author/commentators. Do yourself a favor and pick up his book "Skipping Towards Gomorrah". In each chapter, he investigates one of the seven deadly sins, interviewing normal sinners all over the country. It's funny and very eye opening. You can also read Savage Love online on Stranger website, thestranger.com.

I enjoy Savage's books and his writing style but whenever I see him live commenting on social or political issues he comes off as an arrogant prick. He also has the tendency to shout down his opponents instead of engaging in a real debate. You see some of it on Mahers show.

I don't think he shouted down his opponents. In fact, I thought he was rather reserved with DL Hughley considering what a homophobe DL is.

Man, how brilliant and funny is Dan Savage? Pretty cute, too. :)
You can always read Savage Love on The Stranger website, too. I also highly recommend his books The Kid and The Commitment . . . maybe even more so than Skipping Toward Gomorrah.
Very glad to see Bill Maher giving Dan Savage time on his show -- Dan balances out Bill's often uninformed views on gay people and I can see how they would find each other funny with their unvarnished truth-telling humor.

I agree that Dan Savage is one of the best voices of the GLBT community. Smart, hilarious and informed. And he doesn't seem to take personally all the bullshit from the right wing.

Thank god for DVR, I was able to watch this show! I loved when he was interviewing people and they would spout their beliefs and he would then say, "By the way, I'm gay!" To funny! And DL didn't seem to like a homophobe to me! He brought up a great point about flags and fags! All in all, this show was worth watching again and again!

Not all ideas are equally valuable and logical. The show is "REAL Time with Bill Maher", not "EQUAL Time with Bill Maher."
Huckabee can say whatever he wants, but to suggest that Dan Savage have to "respect" it too is beyond the call of duty. Free speech protects the speaker. But it also protects the audience. They can decide to not like what they hear.
When you're talking about amending the constitution to incorporate "God's law" (the Bible) into the government, I don't think there's much room for debate. It's sorta like Osama Bin Laden's list of demands for global peace. It's non-negotiable.

James,
You're right that DL didn't seem too homophobic on the show, but in his stand up routine he makes some pretty nasty remarks about gays and marriage.

I like the first part where many of the voters aren't engaged yet. I agree with the guy that said, "I hate all of them." It's going to be a lesser of two evils election.

I tuned into to Real Time just before Dan came on. What a treat to listen to him. He didn't shout down anyone. I think it would be great to have more people like him on "mainstream" shows representing the gay viewpoint in a logical, well informed manner.
Oh, and his response to the question as to whether cows have stopped fucking was great. Something like, two cows, that must be wrong. A cow and a bull, that would be OK. He's got a great wit.

Dan Savage has a great online call-in show where he interviews people who leave him sex-related questions on his voice mail.
