John Waters: I Was a Juvenile Delinquent 'Hag'

Waters

John Waters, whose Cry Baby musical is set to open on Broadway, appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart last night and talked about his love affair, both on film and in real-life, with juvenile delinquents:

"I couldn't win any fight. Anyone could beat me up. So in high school, as a juvenile delinquent hag basically, I learned that - people who could beat you up - if you could make them laugh, they wouldn't beat you up, and maybe they would sleep with you!"

  1. cry baby was just an awful movie so i can't imagine it being a good musical unless it's been completely revamped... john's greatest work was with divine of course and when she died he didn't produce the same level of work... susan tyrell who was in cry baby said this as well...

  5. I admit that Cry Baby wasn't as great as Hairspray or Serial Mom, but we >are< talking John Waters here. Like Monty Python's movies, a lot of Waters' flicks are hit-or-miss affairs. I was watching Female Trouble on Sundance recently and although it's my fav of his earlier works, I started to doze off towards the end. I know this is blasphemy but I kind of wish he or one of the newer gay directors would remake it. The story is still near-brilliant -- who wants to die for art?! -- but who could replace Divine? And would that person be male or female?

  11. Crybaby was FABULOUS! John took a different turn with his later styles and reached an entirely new universe. I even got my own mother to watch Crybaby. Now, Female Trouble on the other hand...

I could care less about another friggin' musical, but I fervently disagree with the detractors...and I will always have a special place in my heart for Hatchetface.
