The Priesthood: Men and Lots of 'Em

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York has launched a new marketing campaign in an effort to recruit new meat men into the priesthood. The various posters focus on the priest as father, hero, martyr, etc.

This one, I assume, is for the gays.

Check out the rest of the posters here.

  1. These ads remind of the USMC recruitment ads -- we need a few good men (don't we all!).

  2. Some of my best gay BFFs are priests or the ex-lovers of priests, so I'd say your assumption is right on target: this campaign is for the gays. Although, I'd also add that it's for gays who can tolerate dull wardrobes, a lack of individuality and fewer cocktail parties.
    Cheers, Lulu B.

  3. "Seminary" and "semen" both share the same, er...root.

Is there any occupation these days that *doesn't* get advertised using that bankrupt-through-ubiquity word "hero"?

  4. They ran a trailer produced by the same group for a while in movie theatres. They provoked loud laughter at the E-Walk on 42nd Street.

  5. How ironic that the church, which can be so homophobic, appears to be using a photo from the funeral of Fr. Mychal Judge -- a celibate gay priest who ministered to fire fighters and died at the World Trade Center on 9/11.

  6. The oldest ex-gay movement in town.

  7. Celibacy is a deeply flawed and dangerous concept that has no place in humanity.

  8. Right on, THE POPE IS GAY, right on.

  9. Years ago the New York Archdiocese put out a vocations public relations campaign with the tag line: "The New York Priest: God knows what he does for a living." How true.

  10. I love a man in cassock. And so does the Pope.

  11. The only glaring message I get from this advertisement is that the Catholic Church needs better copywriters. Holy cow, that's a clumsy phrase!

  12. I guess they also only need white priests?
The Catholic Church needs to realize that they should also be targeting their ads towards people of color. This is a bit of a generalization, but wouldn't it make sense to target minority populations who tend to take religion more seriously than white people?

  13. How do I start with such stupidity?

First off, yes the ads are misleading that they are a white only group, but if you go to any church or see the new recruits you will see most are in fact not white.

My real question to you is how is it that minority populations take religion more seriously than whites?

  14. And is ANYONE left wondering why Gay men comprise such a significant chunk of the priesthood? (And I'm thinking one-third would probably be an understatement)

I mean, SERIOUSLY: Look at how things must have been for Gay Catholic men in the past: You didn't want to marry a woman, but you also didn't want to raise suspicions, so ... VOILA! Become a priest! What's not to like? Between the ceremony and incense and robes and jewels, HELL, it's just a step away from musical theatre!

  15. Don't be too hard on them for the all-white photos. In order to find a picture with more than, say, ten priests gathered together, they had to go back decades, when, in fact, almost all U.S. priests were caucasian: Italian, Irish, Polish.

  16. Seems to me the best way to attract new priests is for the church to gut the whole structure of priestly life and redesign it in such a way that it lets a man be a man. However, Bishops will never ever go for that, since it would threaten their power. Can you imagine Cardinal Egan welcoming a man with balls who wouldn't be afraid to stand up to him?

  17. Well, the Catholic Church and the Military are now advertising for members. Both flawed institutions have been "figured out" by most. Plus, both have always been afraid of "the Gays".

  18. I will never understand how the Vatican, which is about 97% gay men, can have the audacity to be so fucking anti-gay. Wouldn't it be grand if one day EVERYONE in the Vatican came out? In one grand stroke they could stand up and say "Open your eyes, dumbfucks. We are gay. Always have been and always will be. Deal with it."
