EU Called on to Look at Moldova Following Gay Pride Terror

Moldova

UK Gay News reports that MEP Raul Romeva has called on the European Union to "reconsider its relations" with Moldova following last weekend's terrifying assault on a bus filled with participants observing Gay Pride festivities there. I posted about the incident on Monday.

RomevaAccording to UK Gay News, "Fifty participants of the parade were blocked in a bus surrounded by several hundred aggressive protestors shouting 'Beat them to death' and 'Don’t let them escape'. After being forced by the neo-fascists to destroy their pride materials – colourful balloons, posters with anti-discrimination slogans and flags of the EU – Pride participant’s bus was eventually allowed to go. Police forces merely observed the violence and attacks and did not bother to intervene."

Said Romeva: "It is unacceptable that Moldova exposes its own citizens, along with foreign visitors, to such violent attacks. Perhaps the European Union should reconsider its relations with a state so gravely breaching International Human Rights Obligations."

  1. Can I just point out that once again, the homophobic thugs are total cowards, while their gay and lesbian fellow-citizens are the ones risking so much by coming out? ? Look at them covering their faces! Real tough guys.

  2. The scary thing is that they're all networking, and with Western right-wing support. The logo used here can be found across E Europe and especially in the ex-USSR (Latvia, for example).

The same posters were used in Romania proper in 2006 and 2007 in the Noua Dreapta (New Right, i. e. Neo-Nazi) marches "Ban Homosexuality -- towards Normality".

So our religious right anti-gay folks are probably funding E. European Neo-Nazis.

  3. Its a disgrace that such attitudes still gain political traction in Eastern Europe, an area of the world that people were perscuted for thier beliefs for decades, and suffered under horriably under the Nazis! I have never understood Polish or Russian neo-Nazi's.

There is only so much that the EU can do. We could put additional conditions on aid and development, ensuring that human rights are respected (though I think thats already done). The issue is that other Eastern European nations in the EU still have a rather backward attidue to gay rights. This includes Romania, the country which along with Russia, has the greatest sway over the nation.

Maybe we should just let all the gay and lesbian Moldovians leave, its a god awrful backward and poor nation anyway. Like Alabama with more snow.
