The Question Texan Republicans are Asking

Whitehouse

On sale at a booth hosted by Republicanmarket at the Republican state convention in Texas.

In related news, former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee warned fellow Republicans not to demonize Obama:

"'Republicans will make a fundamental if not fatal mistake if they seek to win the election by demonizing Barack Obama,' Huckabee told reporters in Tokyo, according to a report by Agence France-Presse. Huckabee praised the country for getting 'to a point where we did not see his color but we truly saw his charisma, his message and what he brought to the campaign trail...When people are really hurting — and they are right now — they're not looking at a person's race,' he added."

  1. If McCain is President, will we still call it America?

  2. Revolting button, but not at all surprising.

I agree with Huckabee, although I think it's a bit premature for America to be all self-congratulatory about race relations.

  3. This really isn't a surprise, the racist are still out and proud and part of the GOP, and Democrats as well to keep it real, as far as two bit Huckabee, didn't he come up with an assassination joke? He is as trifling on this issue as he is on gay rights.

  4. Too many people in this country are looking at race. I was sort of hoping the country would be past that point by now. How foolish of me.

  5. Accepting racists was part of the 2004 platform. I recall the GOP chair saying something along the lines of "...everyone has a home at the GOP."

    Posted by: Rad | Jun 18, 2008 11:09:39 AM

  6. the more idiots wear buttons like that, the more it helps Obama get elected. Independents and confused republicans see assholes wearing that and think - 'do i really want to be associated with these people?'

It's like the Phelps phamily, who in my opinion are among the biggest advancers of gay rights and acceptance in america.

  7. "...everyone has a home at the GOP."

For some, that home appears to be limited to the servants' quarters.

  8. That's a good one Jeff. I have to remember it.

  9. Why is Huckabee in Tokyo, and why does anybody there care about getting a statement from him?

    Posted by: Zeke | Jun 18, 2008 11:17:30 AM

  10. Stay classy, Republicans. It's why we love you.

    Posted by: David D. | Jun 18, 2008 11:30:23 AM

  11. Are you sure that was Mike Huckabee in Tokyo? I'm shocked he said something like that.

  12. Don't those type of Texas Republicans sort of think of it as the "Cracker" Barrell rather than the White House right now anyway?

    Posted by: patrick | Jun 18, 2008 11:46:18 AM

  13. terrible button. But of course race was gonna be used in the general. Obama himself had no problem using sexism to his advantage when it came to getting Hillary out of the race so I'm sure he is not too surprised by this.

    Posted by: daveynyc | Jun 18, 2008 12:13:16 PM

  14. DAVENYC, what were these sexist tactics you speak of?

God help me, I found the Obama button funny. Maybe because it's something I've joked about myself and heard other people talk about in a humorous and even celebretory way. I dunno, but my first response was laughter. Then again, I have a REALLY inappropriate sense of humor. And I can see how it'd be construed as racist, considering the source.

I thought the "Press 1 for English. Press 2 for Deportation" button was much more aggressively racist and offensive.

  15. I'm having a hard time coming up with sexism coming from the Obama camp as well. One time he said "the claws come out," and another time said that Clinton responded with attack ads when she was "feeling down," which are both kind of sexist, but not too shabby for almost a year of campaigning. Not that Clinton wasn't subject to a ton of sexism elsewhere, but I can't find much to attribute to Obama.

  16. DaveyNYC,

There are more pressing issues than the supposed sexism of Obama's campaign versus the quiet racism of Hillary's campaign. The main issue: making sure that McCain is not elected.

    Posted by: Tread | Jun 18, 2008 1:04:24 PM

  17. Again,

Deceptive, misleading title. Is this the kind of categorization and manipulation of the facts that we need? ALL Texas Republicans? C'mon....stop the games...

    Posted by: Ed | Jun 18, 2008 1:23:46 PM

  18. "...quiet racism of Hillary's campaign."

Great way to illustrate the "main" issue, TREAD.

As far as the button goes, it seems to me that White house turned into an outhouse 8 years ago...now we've just all that sh!t to clean up.

  19. "What kind of progressive American leader would stand silent, supporting with the cold reserve of ambition the disgracefully sexist, blatantly anti-feminist attack on a well-respected woman of the same party, a political foe perhaps, but a national Democratic leader?
    Barack Obama - so far.
Make no mistake, Obama's breakthrough says something wonderful about the state of racial politics in our nation - or perhaps the lack of racial politics - and the involvement of young people in politics. But his silence in the case of the cynical media lynching of Hillary Clinton by a national press corps obsessed with her gender is telling...his campaign's chilling acceptance of the gender bias stirred by our national media will also remind many of Ronald Reagan's acceptance of the race-baiting southern strategy - because if Obama accepts the presidency, at least in part, because of abject sexism, a brutal gender attack on a female rival - the most famous female Democrat in history - he will set feminism in our country back a generation."

  20. Aha! So Obama was COMPLICIT in the "disgracefully sexist, blatantly anti-feminist attacks" on Clinton.

In other words, "they" came for Hillary Clinton, and Obama said nothing because he was NOT Hillary Clinton.

This is how holocausts start, people.

Davey, thanks to you and "journalist Tom Watson," I have seen the light!

  21. "When people are really hurting...they're not looking at people's race."

SO good to know. Presumably that means that once the economy recovers, we can all start being shallow, racist jerks again. What a relief!

  22. What 24PLAY said.

  23. Obama is our nominee and we will all support him in the general election but LET'S GET REAL. I for one will not forget all the condescending "dears and "sweethearts" that have come out of Obama's mouth.

I certainly will not forget Barack Obama's decision to have Jay Z's song "99 Problems" played at his victory party in Des Moines- the same song that featured the lyrics on a loop "I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one" to the joys of all his supporters.

Let's not say Obama did NOT fuel the sexism that has plagued this country these past 16 months. I'm just a dude in my 20's so I can't even begin to imagine would it must have been like for women decades ago, what they had to face...but I did see a little of it recently, I think we all did. Obama could have stepped forward and said something about the way the media was depicting his fellow Democrat but he didn't. I REALLY liked him and I kinda thought he might a few times but alas it was silence from his camp. Let’s support him but let’s not pretend he’s perfect…sexism was out at full force. This country has a looong way to go when it comes to the way women are treated. Yes, Obama is to blame as well.

  24. Obama is proving more each day as his naive policy proposals come forth on the stump that he hasn't any sound solutions to solving this country's problems. Kicking off his latest campaign tour in North Carolina, he wants to "send out the stimulus checks again." How about some real world solutions to fix the problems instead of trying to buy votes with taxpayer money.

Windfall profits taxes on oil companies will do nothing but increase gas prices. They will pass it right on to the consumer to keep their stock prices and shareholder returns constant. Removing the off-shore drilling restrictions and proposing tax credits to off-set windfall profits provided that excess profits are invested in domestic drilling and/or renewable and alternative energy sources might be a plan. Robin Hood economics is all that Obama knows.

Rebuilding inner city schools so they can be vandalized, sprayed with graffiti and hopelessly wrecked beyond use is another waste of taxpayer money. Right here in Las Vegas it takes three security personnel 24/7 to guard each school during the summer to keep the gang bangers from defiling them. And isn't it interesting that every time they catch one he's black. They go after the new schools, even in their own neighborhoods. Look at the history of public housing and the billions wasted. The high rises are vandalized until implosion is the only answer.

Like it or not, Bush started the war in Iraq. Personally, I hate it and I think Bush is criminally liable. But the deed is done and we will have to deal with it for decades. If we pull out, Iran will seize the oil fields and block the Persian Gulf as they have promised. We would be facing a renewed war on a larger scale and lock out of oil shipments to the point that the price would be prohibitive for consumer use. Not a shot has been fired from North Korea since 1945 and we are still there.

At this very moment, Australia is preparing its military for domestic gas and food riots. We need to be doing the same thing here.

Obama is a joke. And the people who support him are a disgrace. If you can't see his true intent and how hopelessly unqualified he is, move to Kenya and take him with you.

As for Texas, Republicans have always controlled that state. I lived there for five decades. Only two Democrats have been elected Governor in the past 100 years and they were one term wonders.

    Wake up people!

  25. Johnny Lane,

We already know you hate black people.

Why waste time typing when you could be washing out your sheets before tonight's rally?
