McCain Takes $2300 Contribution from Owner of Gay Sex Site Manhunt

You may have read about Manhunt.net founders Larry Basile and Jonathan Crutchley (above right) in Michael Joseph Gross' OUT article entitled "Has Manhunt Destroyed Gay Culture?"

Crutchley's political leanings are pointed out near the beginning of the piece:

"Crutchley, a liberal Republican with a tight white beard, admits that he felt anxious during Manhunt’s first years, before his and Basile’s initial investment of $800,000 bore fruit. Now, seated at his desk and surrounded by giant photographs of body builders’ glutes, Crutchley says the company brings in at least $2.4 million per month -- almost $30 million a year -- not counting ad revenues, and prospects for growth are strong. Manhunt’s success measures the extent to which online cruising has changed gay urban social life. Is it changing gay politics too?"

Crutchley's right-leaning ways have been reported on before, in the Huffington Post, which reported on a contribution he made to the McCain campaign. Last week, Crutchley defended his contribution in the comments section of an April 2007 interview (which he apparently monitors) with Online Personals Watch:

And here's the amount, via Open Secrets:

It appears John McCain has accepted the maximum individual campaign donation from the owner of America's largest gay sex hook-up website.

After one of our irate readers emailed Manhunt informing them that they had cancelled their account, he received the following email from the company:

Dear Sir,

We are always happy to hear from our members, thank you for taking the time to
express your concerns. The subject that you have brought to our attention is a personal matter and is
not representative of MANHUNT. We thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely, Team MANHUNT

  1. Regardless of whether McCain or Obama wins little will change for the LGBTQ community: We have suffered under Democratic Presidents, Republican Presidents, a Democratic Congress and a Republican Congress.

However, one thing is certain: after the election Jonathan Crutchley still will have more money than all of the combined democratic idiots posting on this message board.

P.S. Those using violent imagery and wishing for Mr. Crutchley's death demonstrate that the soul of the Democratic Party is little more than vindicative and bitter bile. I suggest that you all get yourselves a manhunt account, get laid and stop vomiting your sexual frustrations here.

  2. When my membership is up I will not rejoin. I'm sick to my stomach that I've given that fat piece of shit any money at all.

  3. This guy is pathetic. He only cares about his own personal financial welfare. And why he thinks Repubs are better for that is a mystery considering his finances are sexual-freedom based is beyond me. And the "liberal" crack is especially nauseating. Everything he's gained in his pathetic life is because of the liberalness and openness we have worked so hard to achieve in this country over the last 40 years. Can I say the word pathetic again?

  4. Yep, time to hang up those account dollars. Spend them on beer! Socializing! Reading! Making acquaintances!

  5. Aside from the political ramifications, which I think are abhorrent, I can't believe manhunt makes THAT MUCH MONEY and the interface sucks so bad! And no iPhone version! Half the reason people spend as much time as they do there is because it takes so many clicks to see/do anything on there.

Now that I know how much money manhunt makes, and where the money goes/does NOT go, I'm cancelling, too.

  6. Come on and let's be honest here!

How many of you are going to drop your Manhunt subscription because he is Republican and probably supports many conservative causes (privately), hmmm, let me guess at the number less than 20.

The entire internet sex site sell yourself to the highest bidder is so over done that it is simply pathetic and tragically childish.

The need to "get off" is greater than the gays so called principles and beliefs. Gay men still think with their dicks and asses and if you do something that stimulates one or both no matter who and what you are matters.

Now if you cannot do anything that gets the gay men off then it is all out ATTACK!!

There is FAR too much porn and "hook ups" in the gay community and each person should really work hard and reducing their comsumption.

  8. Am I the only gay guy who, before the Out article, had barely heard of Manhunt, much less never even visited the site at all?

    Posted by: Chris | Aug 13, 2008 1:53:02 PM

  9. Makes sense to me. Manhunt thrives on men seeking men for sex. More men hooked up in civil unions or marriages means fewer customers for Manhunt, even accepting that a certain percentage of men in relationships will still be trolling the Internet for anonymous sex.

Oh, and the attempts by Congress referenced by OTTO, above, to restrict speech on the net in the name of "protecting the children" will persist whether Democrats or Republicans control Congress or the White House. It was a Democrat who signed the original COPA into law.

  10. The question remains how much porn and sex does a gay man need in their life. I think every gay man should print out a few copies of the article and/or send the link to friends. Knowledge is TRUE power to make a more self-aware choice versus confirming to the same standard of everyone else.

  11. Crispy's right! Hideous!

But can we put this into perspective? The idiot donated $2300. No doubt some of manhunt's many employees in Massachusetts are Obama supporters, and if just one donates $2300 -- poof! idiocy canceled out.

It's not as if ALL the profits from manhunt are going to the McCain campaign. That WOULD be a cause for a boycott.

  12. Is this guy really that naive (or stupid) to support McCain based on the tired comparisons that both candidates are against gay marriage? The real key are the judges the next prez will get to appoint to the Supreme Court.

  13. if mccain continues to sell his soul to social conservatives mr crutchley will have to kiss his lucrative site goodbye (censorship). more reason for online gays to support planetout aka gay.com(since they are having such tough times).

  14. Bottom feeder. Although I wish him no ill, society would clearly be better off if he was dead or had never been born. What does he really offer to the world?

    Posted by: DJSauvage | Aug 13, 2008 2:01:05 PM

  15. I will be cancelling my subscription to Manhunt as soon as I can rush home after work.

There are many ways to use online hookup sites (of various stripes) that do not involve lining the pockets of those whose political activities are in direct opposition to my (and your) civil and human rights.

Cancel the account, guys. Just do it. There are lots of other options.

  16. I can't believe their investment was $800,000! Shit I should have gone to school to be a computer programmer.

And their owners are NO different from the "lovely" fellows that own the West Side Club and East Side Club here in NYC. Elitist white guys who could care less about the OD's and spreading of HIV and STD's in their establishments while they enjoy their weekends in the Hamptons.

Maybe M4M4Sex will clean up their user interface and make a comeback. Or we could all run to Gaydar. A4A and any other "Free" site attracts too many sketchy characters (no face pics, someone else's pics, phishing).

  17. And another thing, deep down I feel like this Presidential race is more fractured along a generational divide. Like Bush/Quayle v. Clinton/Gore in '92 -- it's the "Greatest Generation" unable to give credit to the Baby Boomer experience.

The Republicans keep throwing war and terror at us, as if America were marching to the battlefront this very minute. This "war on terror" is just a charade to keep us on edge, chasing a phantom enemy that pops up whenever and wherever it's conviently needed. Crutchley, has apparently, drunk the GOP kool-aid... Put your liberties aside for "the safety" of the country.

So many people have been brainwashed into thinking that war is the only answer, without stopping to ask the real questions: Why all this warmongering? Can't we find better solutions than international conflict? Can McCain's war experience really be more valuable than Obama's intelligence and advanced education?

I would think in "this dangerous age" as Crutchley calls it, we would be better served by an intelligent leader and diplomat, than another hotheaded warhawk.

    Yes. Yes, you are.

  19. KevininVT:

Agreed, a couple thousand bucks won't change the world. But that coupled with the snarky, nasty remarks make me think that those couple thousand bucks are just the tip of the iceberg. It strikes me as naive to think that this is the only money he's sending to the Republicans... it's just the only money he has to report.

Color me suspicious, but I smell a fart.

  20. Didn't McCain get shot down multiple times, and then spend the majority of the Vietnam war in a camp? Kudos to him for surviving... that took grit... but let's not fool ourselves into thinking that he's some sort of talented soldier. He got shot down and captured. Not exactly an indication of a successful military experience.

Posted by: The Milkman | Aug 13, 2008 2:09:21 PM

  21. Where are the gay principles now to stand up against the Republican machine...now some gays are back peddling because theydo not know what they are going to do if they can not distract themselves with sex. Typical reaction: I guess he means us no harm and it was only $2300.00 to McCain. That is why so many organization do not want to grant gays rights because it is so very conditional.

    Posted by: thevoice | Aug 13, 2008 2:11:46 PM

  22. You guys should really read all of the pieces and the crap he is spewing. He is a gay man who is making money off of the gays and could care less as long as he can live in an exclusive manner and purchase porn stars to support the notion that he is desirable...much like Nelly and other artists selling "pimp juice" in the inner city all the while saying that there is NO HARM done.

I made up a few fake accounts and emailed all of these links to about 400 members so far and will do more. I encourage anyone with a memberships to send this information to many people. The gay men should know who they are giving their money to and what they think about them also.

Did you know Manhunt.net is owned by a Republican and he has given money to McCain. Be sure to read all of the articles.

  24. He deosn't believe you are valuable or talented enough to serve your country.

He doesn't believe in granting equal status to your relationship.

He doesn't believe in your right to adopt or protect your family.

He doesn't even WANT TO SEE YOU -- ask the Log Cabin Repubs.

But he will take your money and use it to further oppress you once he's elected.
