Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart Feel F*cked Over by John McCain

Nancy Wilson of Heart told EW that she feels completely "f*cked over" after Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG sent a cease-and-desist letter to the McCain campaign over their use of the group's song "Barracuda" (presumably in reference to Alaskan governor Sarah Palin, who's had that nickname thrust upon her).

Nancy and Ann released the following statement last night after they heard it again following McCain's speech.

"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."

  1. "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women."

Right on, Ann and Nancy. (Like them, I was appalled to hear a Heart song in such an unpleasant context.) It's time for American women (and men) to stand up and show (again and again, if necessary) the hateful anti-feminist, anti-woman truth beneath the hockey mom stand-up comedy routine and Palin family melodrama, however entertaining that might be.

  3. They rock!

While I'm not thrilled with the way copyright law has been trending the last twenty years, artists still have a lot of say over the specific uses of their work. This could also fall under defamation law whereby it was implied that Heart endorsed the McCain campaign.

  4. Speaking of female musicians who detest McCain - I love how he had the stage reconfigured before his speech to be virtually identical to Madonna's Sticky & Sweet stage layout, especially considering how annoyed he is with her comments about him.

  5. MORE BREAKING NEWS!

    From Sully:

"Todd Palin's former business partner files an emergency motion to have his divorce papers sealed. Oh God."

That must be the ex business partner that the Enquirer alleges was tramping around with the Barracuda behind Todd's back.

Whatever could he (they? she? the Repubs?) be trying to hide from prying eyes—all of a sudden?

  6. 24 Play

yeah, I also read (need to find that link) that a judge ruled that the divorce records could NOT be sealed. :-) It is a sad day when the NE is the legitimate investigative newspaper in the US.

I would love to hear Bill's thoughts this. I bet he is grinning ear to ear. Sadly the repub hypocrites will screach that we must forgive her and love her unlike their witch hunt over Bill

  8. Oh, 24PLAY, I hope and PRAY that the latest Palin scandal is true. What's bad for John Edwards has got to be bad for an evangelical hockey ho'. Adultery on the tundra...oh, yes!

Am I being petty, vindictive, and small minded? Damn right! I want Miss Alaska Thang to have her own "Reverend Wright moment". The "religion & guns" public has latched on to her too quickly, and they are demonizing the press for asking questions about her. Damn they are "religion & guns" dumb...but we need their votes--so hush, Derrick....hush, Slim Jim.

Of course, if you're an evangelical Christian all you have to do is start to crying in front of the congregation and say, "I'm sorry, Lord". But the rest of us Catholics, main-stream Protestants, Jews and other heathens won't forgive her...lyin' hussy...I hope.

  9. Derrick

I'm with you except on Edwards.

I supported him after wanting Gore and pre the Iowa/ new Hampshire primaries (switched to Obama). In his case there is a child involved which makes his case different.

  12. I wonder if the elephant party have a backup song... maybe Meredith Brooks would be willing to allow them to use her song... (Palin did reference pit bull in her speech. So technically, she started it.)

  13. what happened to mike/joe/whatev? gone with his tail between his legs?

ever since mcAlzheimer chose that crazy cunt as a slap at hillary and obama, i have been beside myself. i have no patience for bald-faced cynicism. it is beyond time that the dems declare war on the rethugs.

will obama roll over and get raped in the ass like kerry without even being kissed? i hope not. i know hillary and bill would not.

sorry for the awful prose, but i've been in a bad mood for several days now.

DERRICK and JIMMYBOYO need to take me out for an attudude adjustment cocktail.

  14. @ Nic: please leave the c-word for McShame to use. I know you're beside yourself and she's a hideous person, I think it best to avoid sexist trash talk.

  15. @DAVID R.,

you may be right. i may have been indelicate. but answer me this: when is it time for dialogue, and when is it time for baseball bats? what you see as sexist trash talk, i see as evening out the playing field. after all, what are the repugs doing figuratively that they would not be doing literally, given the chance?

  16. I have no problem with vociferously attacking her positions, her lack of experience outside AK, or the fact that she has a large and difficult family to take care of (along with her husband), but I don't think that it helps us to use misogynist terms to describe her (person).

John McCain supposed called his wife Cindy a "cunt" at a meeting and I think that shows us what he thinks of women. I doubt that you're in the same boat as him.
