David Archuleta Has a Crush...on Someone

When I was a teen and beginning to question my sexuality it was hard to come to terms with the fact that I had crushes on the boys around me rather than the girls. I remember asking myself, 'why do I keep running from the truth?'

Interesting then, that the video for David Archuleta's new single Crush tracks Archuleta's attention on the boys almost as often as the girls. Others have noticed as well. And if Archuleta is playing to a bigger audience than the female teen/tween crowd, kudos to him.

  1. I'm amazed at David's likeness as a very young Captain Jack Harkness (who's gay in real life and on the screen).

  2. This caption and article is a bit of a stretch - if you watch the video, the look to the guys is one of disbelief that David has that the guys did not help the girl out of the water. Who are these others that are noticing as well? one other webblog? Come on!

  3. Hmmm, well as much as I'd like to believe David is a young gay man and his video is show's attention to both the boys and the girls, I just don't see it. The only interaction is between David and the blond girl, and she is the only one of the group who reacts to him. No one else does, as if he weren't even there. Oh well, wishful thinking.

  4. It’s a stroke of marketing genius, really. While the video is subpar in every way, i.e. utilizing every cliché in the Music Video 101 manual, its seeming portrayal of the confusing sexuality of a teenager is somewhat of a revelation (although I can’t imagine anyone over the age of 18 feeling anything ‘sexual’ for Archuleta. Cute, yes, but the boy looks 13. Actually…I can see certain folks doing just that…). You could actually see the yearning in Archuleta’s eyes for the boy he’ll never have (which isn’t a stretch of course). I doubt the makers of this vid had the smarts for such deft storytelling, and perhaps I’m over-analyzing, for sure, but what else is one to do when watching this pretty dismal video?
For fun, you should visit some fan sites (one disturbingly creepy one in general) to witness the over-the-top deification of lil’ David. You’d think he was Sinatra!

ROBOCUB – you’re right! I once compared the two in one of my AI articles.

  5. yea, it's pretty obvious the 'crush' is the blonde chic. I don't know, I liked the song...it was sweet.

  6. Yeah, I don't really see it. But that little David Archuleta is adorable. All I want to do is pinch his cheeks and put little bows in his hair.

  7. The only thing I noticed in the video is that he wouldn't stop squinting the entire time. Someone please buy the boy a pair of sunglasses.

  8. I have to agree; I just don't see it in the video, either. Very "Tiger Beat" teen girl oriented. I just did not pick up any gay subtext in the video; no long, languid gazes at the other males, no "longer than necessary" touching or hugging. Just mooning over the girl.

He's a cutie, though. Some day, maybe he'll do something substantive.

  9. That sound you here is the entire membership of NAMBLA getting a major boner!

  10. i kept waiting for any sign of homoerotic tension or attention in this video, only to be very disappointed.

I think you are seeing things that aren't there.

  11. Maybe this is Andy's version of seeing the Virgin Mary in a pancake.

    Posted by: Sandol | Sep 9, 2008 10:52:01 AM

  12. Nope...no gay vibe in the video whatsoever.

  13. Sorry Andy, but I think this is a case of wishful thinking and projection. I wish I could see it, believe me I wanted to, but I can't. The entire vid is focused on him watching the blonde girl. One second of the other boys does not sexual ambiguity make.

  14. I popped over to the World of Wonder website, and a few of those comments are very Claymate-esque in their furiously protective devotion. Oh, no!

However, unlike Clay Aiken, David Archuleta doesn't have a shrewd or manipulative bone in his body.

    Posted by: Turtle | Sep 9, 2008 11:03:30 AM

  15. I don't see it either.

    Posted by: David | Sep 9, 2008 11:08:44 AM

  16. Yeah, talk about wishful thinking. In the (very thin) plot, his looking at the guy is out of jealousy, not lust.

Freud called it "projection," guys. Just cause you lust after the adolescent doesn't mean David does.

And, honestly, if Clay Aiken still keeps up the charade, you think David is going to be the one to go there. Aren't his parents super-religious conservatives?

In any case, David sounds great. And it's a well-done formulaic pop song. Has it been on Gossip Girl yet?

  17. Poor jeffreychrist. Your strained attempts to sound like a snobbish intellectual are betrayed by the fact that you are an American Idol junkie, and by your incapacity to form a grammatical sentence. You have been casting your foul aspersions at Archuleta's older male fans since Day One, and never fail to include an unnecessary and inappropriate snipe at his own sexuality, about which you know precisely zero. There is nothing creepy about having crazed, devoted fans. But then you'd have no way of knowing that.

  18. The video keeps getting pulled. I'll replace it as I can.

  19. Uhh, RASCAL, I won't partake in your vileness here at Towleroad – I’ve been reading and commenting on Andy’s site for years and I refuse to waste my time with you (but not-so-ironically, one seeming negative word about your boy-toy and you come out swinging). I had to endure your pretentious blather before I struck back at Rickey's site.
But, I just gotta respond to a few things - I don't pretend to be an intellect or that I am grammatically perfect. I'm far from it - shit, I never even went to college. Not too much thinking goes into my comments on blogs (unlike your Archuleta blog). Hell, as I write this I’m sure there are misspellings and more grammar errors. Who cares?

I admit to watching Idol every season – where's the betrayal? What, smart people don't watch and comment on reality TV? I think it's the pot calling the kettle black when an 'intellect' as yourself (and your lengthy, almost Freudian repartee with your readers on Archuleta tell me you feel yourself as just that) devotes his time and energy on an Archuleta “devotion” blog. So before denouncing me, there’s a mirror you need to see.

One last thing - I never casted "foul aspersions at Archuleta's older male fans" - ever. Only derided their disturbing sexual proclivity for a teenager. That’s all.

End of discussion. As I said, I won’t turn Towleroad into debate platform with you. So, leave me out of your comments here at Towleroad, okay? Promise to try?

Andy - sorry about the length of this – it won’t happen again. This guy’s been vilifying me for months and every so often I actually care enough to respond. I'm over it already~

And I don't see the gayness either.

  21. Hey Andy – the video keeps getting taken down because it’s not released yet (as you know). Rumour has it that the label actually tried blaming us here at MTVN for leaking it…when we actually hadn’t even acquired it! It was watched in the acquisitions meeting, but so far no one’s acquired it. But I’m sure they will…the song’s a hit, despite its quick descent on the charts...and his fans are clamoring for it.

  22. >> I never casted "foul aspersions at Archuleta's older male fans" - ever. Only derided their disturbing sexual proclivity for a teenager. That’s all. <<

jeffreychrist you are hilarious! Do you even read what you write?

And sorry but no, I will not let you off the hook when I see you spewing your slime about David wherever I find it.

  23. Hey Anon! There's room in the alphabet for the two of us, pick another e-mail address!

There are a lot of great vids on YouTube that show teenage male-male crushes in action. They are very sweet sometimes. Not the least bit like porn. That said, even str8 boys can develop real affection for each other, so lets not overdo the implications of close male friendships.

  24. I don't understand why everyone has it out for Archuleta. He seems like a nice guy and he has an incredible voice. Live and let live folks...

    Posted by: Mattthew | Sep 9, 2008 2:07:04 PM

  25. Who has it "out" for Archuleta? If anything, towleroad was pretty darn supportive of him during the contest. Questioning one's sexuality doesn't not equate to 'having it out' for someone.
