Right-Wing Group's Secret Meet Against 'DADT' Busted by PFLAG

You may remember Elaine Donnelly. She's pictured here testifying at the July congressional hearings on 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'. She's seated next to Eric Alva, the first Marine to be wounded in Iraq, who came out of the closet in February 2007.

DadtDonnelly heads up the right wing group 'The Center for Military Readiness' and called upon Veterans Service Organizations to attend a "a private, off-the-record briefing" in Washington D.C. on Thursday intended to strategize on how to prevent the repeal fo "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" from going forward.

PFLAG obtained the letter sent to the VSOs which reads, in part: "Given your organization's long-standing commitment to military readiness and the high standards and sound policy that promotes it, I hope I can count on you in joining CMR to defend the law regarding homosexual conduct in the military. We need to talk about what can be done, and why, face to face...Due to this issue's urgency, this invitation is not transferrable to casual observers, interns or other non-executive support staff. This PowerPoint briefing, which includes short video excerpts of the July 23 House Armed Services Committee hearing on gays in the military, will cover everything you need to know to provide the type of principled, engaged leadership that only you can give. I would welcome new ideas and commitment that could turn the situation around."

According to PFLAG's Steve Ralls, "The briefing, featuring CMR executive director Tommy Sears, will be held at the organization's Washington conference room, at 1615 L Street, N.W., Suite 650, on October 2nd from noon until 2:30pm."

Wrote Ralls iin the Huffington Post: "Thursday's briefing in Washington is a last-minute, last-ditch effort by Donnelly to try and curry some small measure of influence on Capitol Hill. To do so, she is likely to give VSO leaders misinformation, as she has done with the press and the public, in order to mislead them on the issue and attempt to win them over to her side. As polls of military personnel show that young service members and veterans are overwhelmingly comfortable and ready to serve with gay colleagues, she is attempting to reach out to the older, more conservative VSO membership to try and rally support for her cause."

Watch veteran and Rep. Patrick Murphy read Donnelly at the hearings in July, AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. Is it okay to call her a c*nt? I'm not misogynistic in any way, but "bitch" doesn't seem to cut it.

  2. Obviously she doesn't have a gay hairdresser.

  3. Donnelly also screaches that women should not be in the military

  4. It is the Patrick Murphys of the world that are leading our country to do the right and honorable thing for gay service men and women. They are growing in number and will eventually repeal the disastrous DADT policy. Thanks Andy for re-posting this clip. The contrast is startling and changes minds in ways and numbers little else would.

  5. What the fuck is this lady's deal? Has she ever been in the military, or is she just a civilian? Did she have a crush on some macho military guy that she found out was gay? Or did some queen spit in her soup?

  6. What's interesting about Donnelly is that she is one of the few individuals left willing to speak out publicly in favor of DADT (outside election season, that is), and usually ends up being one of three or four possible representatives of the opposition to repeal whenever such representation is needed. Her presence is largely why the July hearings went so well, and this recent revelation only serves to make the opposition as a whole look that much more pathetic.

  7. I'm tellin yah people it's time to start thinnin the herd here. This "woman", I prefer brainless, spineless, and about as smart as dust, oh wait dust has more common sense doesn't it, needs to have the door slammed in her face when she does show up for this "meeting". Who the hell does she think she is calling a meeting and wasting the time of the VSO? Let alone a private meeting among the execs. Doesn't she realize she needs to crawl back under her pathetic little pebble, no one would give her a whole rock, and die? Any human being that gives these hatemongers any reason whatsoever to live needs to have their head examined and have their white sheets taken off their clothesline and ripped to shreds.

  8. I hope that the readers in the D.C. area will convene on the CMR's offices in Washington when this meeting takes place to PROTEST! The details are given above, but just in case you skimmed over them:

    1615 L Street, N.W., Suite 650
October 2nd from noon until 2:30pm

Have there been any plans for a protest at all? Are the PFLAG people organizing anything?

(I'm not in DC, but I will be sending this to all my friends there - if you think about it, it's rather convenient - you can protest on your lunchbreak. Throw sandwiches, or something.)

This is EXACTLY the kind of event where queer men and women should be convening and staging a public demonstration against unfair, illegal, homophobic policies, which affect all of us in setting up precedents that are dangerous to freedom of all Americans.

  9. I think it is pretty obvious what happened to make Ms. Donnelly so bitter and dried up. She's spoken often about her Dad's military experience. Clearly she walked in on him getting nailed to the mattress by some young buck, or on his knees saluting the flag pole face first and she simply can't deal with the fact that dear old straight arrow Dad was a big ole bottom in bed. The rest of this boring story can be filed under the chapter headings "Denial" and "Transference". There is really no other logical explanation for her irrational animus against gays in the military, so per Ockam's Razor, there we have it. But let's do have some empathy for the dangerously unbalanced dear. Just seeing how she's staring at Alva in that photo with a mixture of disdain, admiration and the pent-up lust of a thousand lonely nights in her empty bed makes me want to hire her a man-whore to clean the cobwebs out of her peesh and fuck some sense into her. Any one have Jeff Gannon's number?

  10. Almost needless to say, we'll need the support of str8 veterans to repeal DADT (and allow gays to serve openly). It's alright for Alva to tell everyone how wonderful he is, but he needs his CO to testify on his behalf to really seal the deal.

She's more of a paid hack, invited in by congressmen who support DADT to spout off on anything to avoid repeal. Oldest trick in the congressional book after lying.

  11. Donnelly is a Phyllis Schafly acolyte who not only believes women should NOT serve in the military, but also believes that women should return to their "traditional" roles as housewives and mothers and refrain from competing for jobs that would otherwise be done by men. Donnelly also believes that women should always be subservient to men. Donnelly, like Schafly, is a dangerous wing-nut but she is part of the Republican "base". I wonder what the LCRs would say about DADT? They probably agree with Donnelly.

  13. Don't be so harsh on the Logs: LCR actually has been tremendously supportive of repeal for DADT, being a major player backing both the Call To Duty and12,000 Flags on the Mall projects, as well as initiating LCR v. the US in the 9th circuit, which, of the three lawsuits challenging DADT has lasted the longest at the trial level.

Now, not that I'd ever disapprove anything making Donnelly look ridiculous, but why is PFLAG dipping its toes in DADT, other than Rahl's former affiliation with SLDN?
