SC Senate Candidate Mick Mulvaney in Sick Robocalling Scheme

South Carolina Republican state senate candidate Mick Mulvaney has created one of the most disgusting robocalls of the election season, attempting to connect his Democratic opponent Mandy Powers Norrell, to a "scary" gay group.

MulvaneyA gay group that doesn't even exist.

The call is intended to send voters rushing to Mulvaney using that old chestnut, the frightening homosexual agenda.

In the call, the fake group, called the Alliance for the Advancement of Gays and Lesbians, says:

"Hi, this is Alison calling from the Alliance for the Advancement of Gays and Lesbians. We are a pro gay rights, pro-choice grassroots organization. I'm calling to let you know we're supporting Mandy Powers Norrell in the race for state senate. A proven Democrat, Mandy Powers Norrell supports homosexual unions and abortion rights. We can count on Mandy Powers Norrell to promote a progressive agenda in the state senate and to fight the right-wing fringe at every turn. Again, this is the Alliance for the Advancement of Gays and Lesbians asking you to vote for Democrat Mandy Powers Norrell on Tuesday, November 4th."

Listen to it, AFTER THE JUMP...

  10. Despicable as this is (and it's amazing how cynical I've become this election cycle since nothing surprises me at this point), if the voters are gullible enough to vote for this guy because of this message, they deserve this scumbag. It's like if Alaska still elects Ted Stevens, they deserve him. Remember, South Carolina elected Strom Thurmond to the Senate six years after he was probably dead.

  11. PS - His campaign slogan is "Principles not politics." Another fucking hypocrite.

  12. Here is the good news

Robocalls are ILLEGAL in South Carolina (like Indiana and a few other states)

SC police are already investigating it and at the very least 1 or a few campaign workers for Mulvaney if not Mulvaney himself will be dragged before a judge in handcuffs on SC evening news right before the election.

  13. ...also charming how "AAGL" resonates so delightfully similarly to NAACP. You can't accuse them of not knowing their market.

  14. Mulvaney's office is claiming it was third-party hoax. Uh-huh.

    Posted by: rascal | Oct 29, 2008 10:00:40 AM

  15. Rascal

That is probably because of the illegality of robocalls in SC.

I'd bet big on the nit wits didn't know about the illegality till police started investigating. Look at their top of the ticket = mcshame = total incompetence. nobody can argue on behalf of repubs running smart and well organized campaigns this cycle

Anyway; somebody is going to jail over this. LOL Totaly loving SC law at the moment.

  16. Mulvaney's BS response to my email is below:

    ---------------------------

    Thank you for writing.

I know absolutely nothing about the calls to which you refer. The robo-call that we did this week was from my wife. It was a very positive message. It is the ONLY ROBO-CALL that my campaign has run. Period. We do not run negative ads, robo-calls or advertisements in this campaign.

I understand that even though these calls went out only just last night, there is already a very substantial webpage set up against me. It strikes me as curious that it was up so quickly after the calls went out.

I encourage you to consider another possibility: some third party opposed to me sent out those calls, so that they can then try to blame them on me. That sort of thing is not uncommon (unfortunately) in politics, nor would it be inconsistent with all the negative campaigning you have seen against me up to now.

You have seen nothing negative from me. Nor will you.

Anyway, at the end of the day, all I can say is that I can assure you this was not my campaign.

    Mick Mulvaney

PS: Unfortunately this sort of thing is not unheard of in SC politics. See:

    http://www.fitsnews.com/2007/09/18/fitsnews-exclusive-phony-phone-calls-in-lowcountry-campaign/

The campaign consultant mentioned in that ad --- Rod Shealy --- has been associated with my opponent’s campaign this year.

  17. The Milkman

    Seriously?

Then please forward it to the SC attorney General offices.

Positive or negative, robocalls are illegal in SC.

His "The robo-call that we did this week was from my wife. It was a very positive message. It is the ONLY ROBO-CALL that my campaign has run. Period." an admittance to illegal action. positive or negative doesn't matter, all robocalls are illegal in SC

    LOL

He admits to some sort of illegal action. LOL Like I said, repubs= total incompetence

  18. Milkman... I just received the same reply from his office.

    Posted by: A.J. | Oct 29, 2008 10:33:48 AM

  19. I wrote Mulvaney again to ask: "Aren't robocalls illegal in your state ?"
    Mulvaney replied "no".

  20. I'd love it if Mandy Powers Norrell got a few more votes out of this!

  21. I GOT THE EXACT SAME RESPONSE FROM HIM! THIS MAN IS COPYING AND PASTING A LIE TO EVERYONE WHO EMAILS HIM!

  22. Try him also at jmm@alturagroup.com - his personal email.

And at 803-547-0525 (home); 803-246-1001 (cell).

  23. I got a very sincere response and we have written back and forth a couple of times this morning. From my correspondence, I believe that he's not behind these calls.

    Posted by: Frank | Oct 29, 2008 11:26:52 AM

  24. Here's the bad news: "robo-calls" are protected by the first amendment.

    Posted by: anon | Oct 29, 2008 12:46:17 PM

  25. Anon = nope sorry they are not.
The supreme court has never ruled on such. The Indiana supreme court did and upheld that state's law banning robocalls. It has NOT been appealed to the Us Supreme court.

    A.J.

Write him again and add in

" SECTION 16-17-446. Regulation of automatically dialed announcing device (ADAD). The law bans all robo calls in the state of South Carolina specifically, “ADAD calls include automatically announced calls of a political nature including, but not limited to, calls relating to political campaigns.”

Also ask him why SC state police are investigating if they are not illegal.

    Again

" SECTION 16-17-446. Regulation of automatically dialed announcing device (ADAD). The law bans all robo calls in the state of South Carolina specifically, “ADAD calls include automatically announced calls of a political nature including, but not limited to, calls relating to political campaigns.”

All robocalls wether positive / negative whatever are ILLEGAL in the state of SC. they are also illegal in indiana and a few other states
