You know what chaps my ass? Is the fact that this douchenozzle uses people’s ignorance to history as a weapon. He said that we should not allow gay marriage because it is 5000 year old unchanged institution. Right. Women were treated like chattel up until the early 1900’s. Rarely did women have a choice in their spouse. Also, as Lisa and Silver Fox pointed out, when white racism against blacks was envogue, it was stated that marriage would rot and fall apart if the races were allowed to unite. Also, civil unions do NOT come with equal rights…all I gotta say is where are the FEDERAL TAX BENEFITS and INS equality if they are so effing equal??

I’m in love with Lisa Bloom! That’s it, boys, I’m switching teams and marrying into the Allred family, which may now be easier to do since my current marriage hangs in the balance.

  3. peterparker says

    I *love* her!!!!!!!

However, I must point out that this is not about respect, dignity, etc… It is about having the same legal protections as the rest of America. Civil unions and domestic partnerships do NOT provide the same rights. Neither are they portable to other districts/cities/states in the same way that marriage is.

Can we please, please, please refrain from incitement to violence in the comments? Joe.My.God’s blog was being monitored last week. It does nothing for our cause and just gives us bad press.

  5. ERB says

I agree with SAMI. Right now, we are peaceful, and the number of protesters is becoming greater and greater. You will not get moderates on our side with threats of violence or rioting. The more we show the parallels of LGBT’s plight to that of other minorities, the better off we are. Let the radicals be the ones protesting funerals of the soldiers who died for our country with signs saying “God Hates Fags”. The LGBT community is and should remain above the fray.

You just know that Tony Perkins is one of those girls who go home change into a little black dress, conservative pearls and go riding around town looking for someone to blow.

You can see it in his eyes.

  7. Gregus says

So glad they had Lisa Bloom on. She’s smart and can articulate our case with ease. She does a much better job than some of the gay commentators who get invited on TV show. Very glad she’s on our side!

Face of a sad old closet queen… like Ralph Reed.
RE: the history of marriage, an illuminating read: “Same-Sex Unions in Premodern Europe” (Random house/Villard, 1994) by eminent Yale historian John Boswell. Same-sex unions were blessed by the church until the 14th century. And marriage wasn’t a sacrament.
This whole Christian family values thing is a modern invention. These people are so ignorant. They have to erase history to try to support their agenda.

Tony Perkins needs to STFU and read about state law and civil rights. This happened to African-American’s and the courts stepped in and over turned that legalized bigotry. Now it’s happening to homosexuals (which is NOT a choice, get real). I LOVE Lisa Bloom, good on her! Civil union “scheme” Perkins?! Really?! It’s “not discrimination”??? Protecting a 5,000 year old institution? Not really, the Church didn’t recognize marriage until 400-500 years ago, seems Perkins needs to focus less on his own internalized homosexuality and read a book on history before he opens his ignorant mouth. Sanctity of marriage, bitch please. Let’s ask Guilliani who cheated numerous times on his wives, or the Palin family and their pregnant unwed daughter. They can all kiss my gay ass.

WOW She’s one sharp tack! STUDY up the “Redefining” argument, it’s full of holes. One is that “marriage” in AMERICA is NOT 5000 years old. Stick to that argument, i.e. we’re talking about America. “Marriage” has not been defined by anyone group for 5000 years, Perkins is using the Bible as his authority and America is NOT a Theocracy. Keep those 2 simple points in mind.

  14. says

Lisa is awesome. Anderson needs to bring up the point she mentioned – Why don’t we redefine civil marriage to be civil unions for everybody? IF they won’t let us have marriage under the law, they shouldn’t have it either.

  15. Leland Frances says

“This is Anderson Cooper, reporting from Auschwitz. 5000 more Jews arrived today. Looking dirty, starved, half-frozen, and frightened, camp officals assured me they’d be treated well, though I did see the sick, elderly, and children being herded to a separate line. What? Am I Jewish? Sorry, I never talk about my private life. Tonight on Larry King…..”

I really think many of the leaders of the evangelical hate agenda are a bunch of old closet queens, (like the catholic church, only possibly meaner and more twisted.) Once enough of them fall out of their closets, in due time it will come to be seen simply as an embarrassment that they were able to hijack the national political agenda with their unresolved personal baggage.

Andy I think you should take down when people post fantasies of violence, it plays right into the hands of Perkins et. al.

  17. Craig says

As you watch that freak Tony Perkins, never, EVER forget that the Family Research Council is designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. WTF is ANYONE in the legitimate media interviewing HIM for?

With all the coverage of Barack Obama’s election, did anyone race to get the Klan’s reaction? There’s not one shred of difference: they’re both hate groups!

Don’t hesitate for one second to bring that up to your straight friends and allies. Would we wait around denying African Americans their rights because the Klan wasn’t up to speed yet? Why in heaven’s name is the Family Research Council being legitimized this way?

The 37% or so gay voters who went for McCain: are you aware this is the freak that helps form the Republican party? Would wealthy blacks have

  18. says

She’s fantastic! Tony, of course, was wrong on so many things it’s hard to keep track. Civil rights should not be subject to the whims of the majority, and they’ve always, as Lisa pointed out, been achieved thru the courts. (And what does Obama’s election have to do with interracial marriage cases decades ago?) And, contrary to Tony’s lie, marriage has not been a static institution for the past “5000 years”. It has, of course, continually evolved, and the parallels between same sex marriage and interracial marriage are undeniable to anyone with a basic knowledge of history.

If Tony thinks these peaceful protests are “riots”, he really is a pansy.

would you patronize an establishment that funded something that takes away the rights of certain group because they were black, latin, brown, polk a dot, plaid?

Perkins is an utter dickwad douchebag… what a major LOSER! How he can sit there and call himself a ‘Christian’ when he lies as much as he does about Marriage and its origins (to keep the ignorant kool-aiders sated and in line) is absolutely beyond me!

Lisa, on the other hand, is sharp, to the point, on message (accurate and truthful) and shows up this putz to be the fucking idiot that he is!

Thank you, Lisa, for being such a great ally and such a great proponent of equality, a concept that the far religious weirdo right just have NO CLUE about!

I am honestly sick and tired of this shit. No more Mr. Nice for me. I’m tired of trying to be patient and go through proper channels. Let’s hit them where it’s going to hurt. In their pocket books, check books and change purses. I have come to the conclusion one can not overcome their fundamental ignorance and hypocrisy. They will continue to blindly follow whatever flock leaders they choose to lead them. It is time to make a stand.

This country was founded to escape from a domineering and repressive church. When this battle was fought 232 years ago it was the Church of England. Today it is the Church of Christ. Different names but the same oppression, discrimination, hatred and bigotry as 232 years ago.

Our forefathers tried peaceful demonstrations and protests but they didn’t work. They kept trying throughout the Revolutionary War to settle without violence but the British wouldn’t listen. From 1776 to 1783 we fought and died for freedom and equality. We were beaten time and time again but we continued to get back up and fight until we had won.

Even after the war the Constitution as we know it threatened to tear the country apart because of its similarity to the British government. Even the original founders of the Constitution were at odds with each other. The Federalists and the Anti-Federalists negotiated the end document we know today with the Bill of Rights and the original 10 Amendments because they wanted to guarantee future generations would not be subjugated by another domineering and repressive church.

We owe it to our nation’s founders to NEVER give up until we have won the battle. It can be civil and it will be civil until civility no longer works. This is the New Revolution… The Rainbow Revolution!

    TV: more heat than light.

It’s nice to think that this was all the fault of right-wing bigots, but 52% of CA is not going to be evangelicals or Mormons. We are simply not that well liked or important enough for mainstream str8’s to grant us marriage rights, whatever the excuse is. People don’t want their str8 marriages associated with gay marriages–they want them to be “special” and somewhat “exclusive”.

Just think how great it’s going to be when this hypocrite is caught leaving a gloryhole. He’ll slip up. It’s just a matter of time and he knows it. You can see the fear in his eyes.

And thank you, Lisa Bloom. Your levelheaded reasoning and eloquent argument left your opponent’s outdated, bigoted rhetoric sounding totally ridiculous.

It’s so funny that the religious groups always say – don’t redefine marriage. Oh geez, why not we don’t redefine how we travel? Jesus didn’t use a car, Jesus didn’t have a microwave, Jesus probably didn’t pay taxes!!!! How is it redefining?! Caucasian or Westerners didn’t use to eating rice and now rice is redefining them?! It’s more than 5000 years that Indian eat curry and now caucasian are changing their eating habit – oh no, SIN!!! Untraditional! How daring!!!!!

People didn’t used to flying and now planes have redefined traveling! Geez, is there something we can do because I don’t want us redefining traveling!! It’s more than 5000 years of tradition where I could walk or ride a horse!!!!!!!!

  26. ChrisM says

Never has there been a better and more important time to come out than now. It has been proven repeatedly that people who know gay people first hand are more likely to support equality. Does this mean that everyone who knows a gay person is going to support marriage equity? Nope of course not, but it is much more difficult to discriminate against and demonize someone you know, trust and/or love and even a few more supporters here and there will eventually build to the needed majority. I realize that many who don’t come out do so for personal reasons but if you think it through once we’ve all gained a legal level of respectability then there would be less reason to try and keep your sexual orientation a secret. And please don’t think it can’t or won’t happen – I’m old enough to remember when there was even a thought of gay marriage and look where we are today. No, it’s not yet possible for everyone but it wasn’t too long ago that it wasn’t even considered an possible option for any of us.

  27. Leonard says

Ms. Bloom was fantastic! I especially enjoyed when she said, in response to Tony Perkin’s argument that civil marriages and civil unions were the same, that if so, then straights can have civil unions and gays can have marriage. Way to point out the obvious discrimination in civil unions.

She destroyed that fool on every level.
