Morning Joe Debate on Rick Warren

Buchanan_capehart

Joe Scarborough, Pat Buchanan, and Jonathan Capehart spar as the Rick Warren debate continues on Morning Joe. Capehart is outnumbered and bullied into a corner as that old Huckabee chestnut "the violence threshold" rears its ugly head again. Frustrating.

Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP...

  2. That assault was painful to watch. And the condescension! "I love your fashion sense"??? "Are you okay?"

I hope these people will be embarassed by this footage years from now.

  3. Gotta love two cranky old out of touch white men lecturing a Black gay man about the Black Civil Rights Movement.

Scarborough and Buchanan are delusional windbags obsessed with the sounds of their own voices and committed to their bigoted views.

Capehart did a good job defending LGBT rights, but this was clearly a set up. This is another example of why it is so critical important that we all come out and articulate why we are fighting for equal rights.

  4. OMG what a brace of bigots. And Pat looks crushed that he can't own slaves anymore.

And why are people who are so upset about "radical appointed judges" so willing to have it go to the Supreme Court? Those judges aren't elected either.

And who is the ventriloquist dummy next to Joe with the face-lift stretched sour puss? what a bitch look.

and why are straight white guys always "the authority" on civil rights??

"Why impose your minority views on the majority who doesn't believe in them"??? Let's bring back slavery and strip women and blacks of the vote.

  5. Capehart was entirely too reasonable when faced with blatant untruth, prejudice and contempt. Those people were being intentionally ugly and unreasonable.

So where's his own passion, his fight back? He should have given what he got.

  6. Could someone please send Joe & Co some news about our people getting the short end of the stick in matters of housing, in matters of violence? With all due respect, I'm not sure he reads your blog, Andy.

  7. AHHHHH! The foul party-line slime being flung from Buchanan and Scarborough makes me want to scream!! In addition to many other distortions and lies in this segment, I can't stand it when Buchanan et al. use the arguement that gays are telling conservative christians not to impose their views on everyone else while trying to do the same thing. ACTUALLY, you asshole, the passage of gay rights does not affect your rights or life at all, while the passage of Prop 8 and similiar amendments around the country DO infringe on MY rights, and DO DIRECTLY interfere with what I am and am not allowed to do with my life in this country. Ugh, this all makes me so MAD!

  8. NICK,

if it is any consolation, i am as pissed off as you. i am bitterly disappointed by obama's selection of warren, and the disappointment is aggravated by talking heads who want to excuse his choice as a clever political move. i am sick of politicians saying that my feelings don't matter, that my sensibilities are being kicked down the road like an old tin can. the song goes on to say, "that's no way to treat a friend." obama, what is your mealy-mouthed rationalization for this? why would you insult your friends? ultimately, that is a measure of a man. you don't betray a friend for expediency. you do not measure up.

  9. Wolf

The Scarborough time slot is fox lite . Always has been. Scarborough is a repub. A former Repub FL rep. A failed repub politician (voted out) who moved into the media

  10. Scarborough and Buchanan are blowhards who have no understanding of what gay rights is all about. Pat is so out of touch with reality that I wonder how he continues to be asked to screaming matches on national television. I used to like Morning Joe but lately I think his dickster/trickster has distorted the value of his show. And, in addition, Rick Warren should stay at Saddleback ot whatever and wherever is his Sunday gathering place and leave the inauguration to someone who has lived and preached a life of inclusion.

  11. Hey Joe: I'm pretty sure that Matthew Sheperd and Lawrence King can't live anywhere they want. The right is trying to portray the gay community as a bunch of spoiled brats. We need to remind them that our people are getting beaten and killed and that their hate speech only adds fuel to the flames.

  12. PAUL T.,

indeed, we do have a responsibility. gay men and lesbians contribute so much to society. we cannot let bigots control the conversation.

  13. Buchanan: "...only imposed by judges...unelected, anointed judges distorting their constitution."

Hmmm, the California Supreme Court justices are first appointed by a sitting Governor, then they are up for elective office for a full term after their initial appointment expires.

Example: in 1998, Ronald M. George received 4,654,671 votes (75.5%) to retain his position as Chief Justice.

Methinks this old "unelected Judges" crap has to stop!

  14. Capeheart is a fucking idiot!

The federal courts for decades and decades refused to enforce the 14th and 15th amendments. Their perverse reasoning provided cover for Congress not to enforce them either. It is sheer folly for Capeheart to proclaim he has no problem with activist judges doing whatever they want.

  16. Let's hope for a better late than never X-Mas gift and pray that gift comes in the form of the Vatican, Rick Warren, and others being hit hard by the Madoff scandal. I really hope one of them gets hit by this and loses millions. It is so sad to see these awful people use such distorted reasoning against us. This isn't a theocracy! Also the excuse that this has been the tradition in every culture is false. Wasn't there a news story that revealed that gay unions were part of some societies back in the day? Also gay relationships and transgender people were very accepted and even deemed divine in alot of cultures until the radical colonist from Britian took over their countries(the main example being India). But none of this every gets discussed or mentioned. Often times our movement seeks to find a way to elicit compassion from the other side. I feel that whats missing from the other side isn't compassion, it's reason. Most of these people just have no idea and just can't relate. And religion adds to that blinder before their eyes, making it even harder to see the truth. One can only imagine what the U.S. would be like today if history had taken a different turn. Would there be public lynchings of gays/lesbians? Would we be allowed to even get on the bus? I think this issue should be talked about as well on t.v. and elsewhere.

  17. I try not to watch Buchanan at all so can anyone tell me if he says the same sort of things when he's on Rachel Maddow's show? Or does he conveniently hide his homophobia just so she'll consider him her "friend" and continue to invite him back on as a commentator?

  18. So our rights are not being violated until we get a track record of being abused daily throughtout the nation? We can accept that we are allowed to live, work, and eat meals where we want quietly; BUT expecting marriage equality is not an option.

  19. Yes, Buchanan is completely time warped. And yes, Joe isn't the go to guy to fight for gay rights. But I am pretty sure he would have voted against Prop 8. For anyone who has taken the time to watch Morning Joe, they would realize the nuanced postions and intelligent discussions that take place on the show, carefully disguised by crude jokes and banter. What everyone here forgets is that the majority doesn't sit around their kitchen tables with the same mindsets as we take sitting around bars and cafes talking about these issues. What we have understood as fact is still thought of as opinions. All of the panelists know these are facts, even Pat does, though he does his best to conceal it so he can be consistent on his positions in public. It does us a service to be able to reason out our positions in a way that brings nervous straight people into the fold, on shows like this. It helps to put yourself in their shoes, and imagine what life would have been like if you were born straight. Truly think that through, as if you never had to reason out these ideas, as if you never had to come out, as if the gay world was completely external to your personal experience. Too often we forget that. I think that even though Joe might on the surface take a hard stance, he is ultimately trying to provide access into the gay mindset by playing devil's advocate and ultimately bringing us closer to the center. I wish we could just force the majority's hand through the courts, but I dont think today's political climate gives us the same opportunities that the radical upheaval that the late 60's and 70's provided. I'm all for a hard stance on this, but I think that public debate, especially for a light morning show (albeit one that does a fantastic job of laughing at republicans, morning joe is no fox lite), needs to be accessible for the majority while quietly bringing them into the fold through logical reasoning. Just look at the last 30 seconds of the clip, where Joe calls out Pat for his flawed logic. Also, look at Pat's smirk where he sees he's about to be called out. These people aren't stupid, they just use stupid people for political power. Come on guys.
