Prince Harry in Trouble Over Video Containing Racist Remarks

Harrykiss

Prince Harry has been caught up in controversy after a 2006 video shot while he was at Sandhurst Academy surfaced:

Harrykhan"In the film, the 24-year-old prince calls an officer (his friend Ahmed Raza Khan) from the Pakistani army, who was on the course with him, 'our little Paki friend'" and, when he sees another officer cadet wearing a camouflage veil, exclaims: 'Fuck me, you look like a raghead.' He also mocks the Queen - the commander-in-chief of the British army - during a pretend mobile phone call. Last night, St James's Palace issued an apology for Harry's behaviour in the film, obtained by the News of the World. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said last night: 'This sort of language is not acceptable in a modern army.'"

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has demanded an inquiry.

MORE: "Later Harry, wielding the camera again, asks another member of the squad to talk through the exercise they have just done. He asks for 'your ups and downs in the exercise. Highs and lows. Good people, bad people. Good points, bad points.' Off camera, he adds: 'How do you feel? Gay? Queer on the side?' Then Harry asks another cadet: 'Anything you want to say? There’s no secrets here. Quickly just tell me what the f ** k is going on?' ... Other scenes in the video diary show Harry enjoying party nights out with his pals on manouevres. In one scene the Prince—now on the wagon—mockingly mouths to another soldier “I love you” before kissing him on the cheek and licking his face."

A spokesman for the Royal Family apologized for Harry's statements: "Prince Harry fully understands how offensive this term can be, and is extremely sorry for any offense his words might cause. Neither the army nor the armed forces tolerates inappropriate behavior in any shape or form. The Army takes all allegations of inappropriate behavior very seriously and all substantive allegations are investigated."

Watch the video (which doesn't include the gay references), AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. Mind yourself, Harry. There only room for one Queen in the palace and it aint you-yet!

  2. Ick on so many levels, I guess he really is his Grandfather's spawn, well, maybe....

  3. YAWN.

So he's a 20-something asshat. And rich and cute. Really...the world is full of 20-something asshats who are rich and cute (25% of reality programming on US television is based on this fact.) Every country's military is a particular hotbed of 20-something asshats -- who, frankly, are trained to hate the different so they can more easily kill and oppress them. The fact that his grandmother is a political figure doesn't really make this any more interesting.

The "furor" around these tapes is like someone getting up on a high horse about misbehaviour by Nancy Pelosi's grandson. It's offensive and not appropriate, but it's hardly worldwide news. And who of us would really want tapes of our behaviour when we were in our 20's floating around and commented on by the world press?

...and to be honest his joke phone call to his grandmother (say hi to the corgis! God Save You) IS funny.

  4. Buster -
    - when you are a minority its not funny. I dont appreciate been called a raghead or Paki...
    - the Queen's grandson is not at the same level as Nancy Polosi's grandson...big difference

  5. Raghead is not a derrogatory term, now towelhead, maybe....

  6. I still want him.

  7. Buster, he may be "cute" to you, but, when you are part of the minority being attacked, it hardly makes it any more palatable how the person looks who is throwing the slur. It never ceases to amaze me how some gay men will let "cute" get away with anything, the same ones who let it pass when they spew homophobic slurs and give beat downs are the same ones who laugh off the racial ones, as if the "cute" guy would want them. Cute gets you a pass at being a bigot, whew, when will this sort of thinking ever cease????

  8. The important knowledge to take away from all this is that Harry's pubes are ginger as well.

  9. Buster:

I'm guessing that Nancy Pelosi's job is not being Nancy Pelosi's grandson. The monarchy is a grotesque anachronism which is offensive to reason when there are poor British people. This fucking moron does not understand the genetic lottery that he won, and this video rubs his arrogance in people's faces. It is proof that the British people need to step up negotiations for the Windsor family to sign over the majority of its wealth to the country and get the fuck out.

  10. Wow, Shan and Tim -- learn to read ALL the words.

I said that Harry was cute and rich (which is basically why he's reported on in this blog and elsehwere, like any number of celebutards) and that his COMMENTS WERE "OFFENSIVE AND NOT APPROPRIATE" (but not worthy of worldwide reporting because he's basically a pointless celebrity with no real power or importance, except what we give him by reporting on/reading about him).

Sigh -- this is why it's not worth writing things that contain more than one thought. Anymore, most people can only follow quips.

  11. I am shocked, SHOCKED I say *clutches day pearls with a gloved hand, yet without spilling nary a drop of "tea"* that this product of generations of inbreeding, most recently of the Aryan strain, would make stupid, racist, and offensive comments. He will surely not be invited to another one of my candlelight suppers.

  12. landon bryce

    LOL

Yeah he is lucky that the particular sperm from James Hewitt that made him popped into his moma as vs popping into some poor commoner Hewitt was stewping on the side while they were cheating on charles (who was cheating with camilla).

The Queen should just confront the schmuck and threaten to oust him from the family with no money since he really isn't family.

  13. I'm a minority (Columbian) and gay and I really don't know why there's such a big furor over this. Yes, what he says is offensive and I'm sure in person he's probably a spoiled brat who thinks quite highly of himself. But in the scheme of things with what is going on in Gaza as well as our collapsing economy, some ramblings of a 20-something is hardly news. And lay off Buster. Read his whole post first before you attack.

  14. Just because you're a "minority" doesn't mean you can claim the authority on racist comments and if they're newsworthy or not.

Isaiah Washington's name was dragged through the mud for months for dropping the f-word(not even aimed at a homosexual). If no one had a problem with that then no one should have a problem with this.

The double-standard that it's ok for a "cute" white guy to be racist or that it's not newsworthy when they do it, but all hell breaks loose when a "minority" does it needs to stop.

It's all or nothing, one way or the other. Either it's ok for everyone to spew racial/homophobic slurs or no one at all.

  15. Thanks, Landon.

Another point: Americans can vote Nancy Pelosi (or whoever) out of office. Gordon Brown is only the head of government, the Queen is the head of state and UK taxpayers have to help support her and her wretched family. If her relatives want to behave like council estate scumbags they should renounce their titles and take themselves off the Civil List.

  16. Wow...to be from the highest level of your society's aristocracy and still behave like trash. Wait a minute. We just had our own version of that in the White House for 8 years...ending a week from today...wow.

  17. Thank you, NOWAYJOSE.

  18. Nancy Pelosi isn't the Head of State. And her grandson isn't going to inherit her title by virtue of being Italian and born to the right to mother.

This isn't the first time Prince Scary has gotten in trouble for racism. Remember the time he showed up to a party in a Nazi uniform? Or when he referred to certain indigenious peoples as "spear chuckers"? And sadly, this isn't the first time the Towleroad readership has shamelessly defended a habitual racist because he's a "cute" white boy.

    New President.

    Same America.

  19. Hey Buster, perhaps you need to say he is "cute" to you, now, his Dad, Hewitt that would be cute, this young man is just a two bit bigot.

And, thanks NOWAYJOSE for keeping it real, there are plenty of gay men who really need to heed your wise words.

  20. How would you like it if absolutely everything you said and did from the moment you were born was taken personally by most of the current or former English-speaking world, and you were never EVER allowed to grow up or have an imperfect decade of your life? Do you really think that's worth all the palaces and cars and press coverage? Have none of you ever had a scumbag moment or phase ever in your life, let alone in your 20's, in the military for goodness sake? Have you never made a racist or derogatory remark about someone who has threatened your person, property or friends? Harry is in a war zone in Afghanistan; people who wear "rags" on their heads shoot at him and his comrades in arms EVERY DAY, is he not allowed to be an insensitive asshole concerning his assailants while in a combat zone because "he won the genetic lottery?".
Why are you guys so easily offended? I'm only offended if I really believe that the offending person really means to deprive me or someone like me of something, whether it be liberty, self-worth, or my life, or whatever. If you can prove to me that Harry really wants to deprive "ragheads" of something for any other reason than many of them were trying to shoot and kill him, then by all means be offended, and I will too.

  21. Omy gosh that's really really bad.. I never liked this guy before, and never I dont even care if he exist! but thats too bad.. God its watching those actitude, and that happend when life give them that kind of opportunities, having money in that way, and those advantages, from other ppl, and they act like they are the kings of kings,

Lord its the only one the King of Kings, and The best from the beste.. He should be thanksfull everyday for what he got..

Completely Racist... Nothing against any ppl on the world we all are equal.

  22. I can understand people being upset but the "paki" comment, but I think Harry deserves a little latitude. I've been in the army and when you're out in the field with your mates, you can get a bit loopy.
For the record our higher ups used to refer to the Arabs as "towel heads" too. It's just the military mentality. I'm not excusing his comment, but stuff like this happens.

    Posted by: Ruben | Jan 12, 2009 9:04:32 PM

  23. Well, this should be no surprise.

A long line of Royals have shot off at the mouth: The Duke of Windsor (Edward VIII), was constantly putting down Jews.

The Duke of Edinburgh (Philip) has constantly been in trouble with his comments time-and-time again.

At least Harry is the better looking of all these guys.

Posted by: Sean from Vancouver, BC | Jan 13, 2009 1:57:57 AM

  24. So, if "Paki" is racist, are we still allowed to say "Pakistan" or "he is Pakistani?" Fucking ridiculous.

    Posted by: shane | Jan 13, 2009 7:49:38 AM

  25. Nowayjose, I don't know what planet you have been living on, but "minorities" usually get a pass on what they say (because to criticize them would be racist) and "white guys" don't (because no matter what they say, it has to be racist).
If Isaiah Washington had been a white man who made a comment about a black or hispanic man, all hell would have broken loose. Instead, he made a comment about a fag, and that's still okay in some circles.
