Kanye West: 'That's So Gay' Should Be Used as a Compliment

Kanyewest_3

Kanye West tells Details magazine that the phrase "that's so gay" should be made a compliment.

KanyecoverSays Kanye: "Titles are very important. I like to embody titles, y'know, or words that have negative connotations, and explain why that's good. Take the word gay—like, in hip-hop, that's a negative thing, right? But in the past two, three years, all the gay people I've encountered have been, like, really, really, extremely dope. Y'know, I haven't, like, gone to a gay bar, nor do I ever plan to. But where I would talk to a gay person—the conversation would be mostly around, like, art or design—it'd be really dope. From a design standpoint, kids'll say, 'Dude, those pants are gay.' But if it's, like, good, good, good fashion-level, design-level stuff, where it's on a higher level than the average commercial design stuff, it's, like, gay people that do that. I think that should be said as a compliment. Like, 'Dude, that's so good it's almost . . . gay.'"

Adds Details: "West's friends and professional adjuncts, who quietly pass in and out of his loft throughout the day, start cracking up, and he leaves his chair for a bit of stand-up: 'Dude, that's so good it's almost gay!' 'Dude, you pay real attention to detail—that's almost, like, gay!' 'You had a whole conversation with that girl without bringing up sex? That was, like, gay!'"

  1. I... I don't have the words. Would someone please just shut him the fuck up?!?

  2. He's obsessed with the gays, yet I really couldn't care less about him. He's constantly patting himself on the back for his deep thoughts about (and apparent obsession with) the gays, but he just sounds like an idiot.

It's a real relief to know I won't have to worry about seeing him at a gay bar, despite the dope conversations we might have.

  3. Dear Mr. West:
    Please shut up.
    Thank you,
    The Gays

  4. Some of us have good conversation skills and aren't primitive at all!

We're almost like REAL human beings.

I'm so glad some one famous is finally standing up for us. A quiet minority as we are...

    *sigh*

At first I tried to humour Kanye but this is just taking the piss.

  5. Calm down, fagolas. There are far better targets for your vitriol.

  6. Oh man. This is really at least somewhat charming. These PSAs may have good intentions but they come off as being more than a little kneejerk 'phobic and somewhat backhanded. I know he's trying not to come off as close minded, but he's not quite there yet is he? "Thats so gay" is a slur that drives me up the wall, and while I'd be happy if it disapeared of was turned into the positive euphamism I see it to be, heh attaching the concept that all gay guys have to be into design and high end fashion to claim the right... is just another stupid stereotype to knock down later.

  8. Kanye,

You're a total douche bag, talentless and idiot. Consider that a compliment.

Me, gay but not as gay as thou.

  9. This just screams, "Some of best friends are black!"

    Seriously,shut up Kayne.

  10. oh the levels of his stupidity have hit an all time high.
And the amount of sterotypes he spits out are insulting. Not ALL gay people are into fashion, art, interior design, and being fashion forward. The same way that not all african americans are poor, drug dealers, uneducated, crime driven individuals, or for that matter "rappers".

Instead of promoting equality and recognizing that no matter our sexual preference we are all unique individuals, this idiot promotes the same racism that all his life hes probably been subjected to.

Why is he so reluctant to go to a gay bar? What is wrong with a group of gays socializing at a bar? C'mon Kanye, and u call urself the voice of ur generation! Dont be a hypocrit and accept everyone as individuals, the way u would like to be accepted!

  11. What a f#$king moron. I know a four-year old who's more sensible than this chump.

  12. I love Kanye -- I'm truly a fan, but watching this transition -- from homophobe who would drive quickly through West Hollywood to person who "is now comfortable socializing with gays" to this new "homosexuality is cool"-thing makes me think he needs to come the fuck out already.

I appreciate what he's trying to do, and maybe it's just in the questions he's being asked, but THE TIME HAS COME for him to just come on up out of that closet if he's in one...

  13. Poor thing. He just sounds so lost. Nobody around to put his head straight. Like Michael Jackson, Britney & Co.

  14. CLOSED MINDS, IGNORANCE AND HATRED IS CERTAINLY RAMPANT IN THE PRECEDING COMMENTS - you'd think the community would know better. Here's a high-profile artist from a demographic that notoriously homophobic trying to put a positive spin on the phrase [sic] "that's so gay" and what does the GLBT community do?

Crucify him for expressing himself. I thought self-expression was something the GLBT community cherished?

It's no wonder the rest of the world only sees us as nothing but limp-wristed bitching queens - that's the only face we put out there most of the time.

Why are you all so bitter? Sheesh.....

Kanye - THANK YOU for trying to reach out to understand us. And I think that using the term "that's so gay" in a positive manner as you described is a great idea!

We need to embrace our negatives - just like black people re-claimed the 'N' word....

  15. I dunno guys, you're being a bit harsh. Yes, he's not all the way there, but are we really going to say "shut the fuck up" or call him a "douche" because he's not? I found his comments charming, trying to reclaim "that's so gay". I also think he's brave in a way, because of course he risks being called a faggot himself. And in the hip-hop community "faggot" is about as NICE as it usually gets. In the gangsta community you can expect to be bashed, and In the Dancehall and Jamaican community singers repeatedly brag about BURNING and BEATING gays and call for the MURDER of all gay people! So in this context, cut the guy a break, he may be a bit silly and run his mouth but at least he's a well-intentioned ally...

  16. i love kanye. sooo sexy

  17. He's an idiot, but I truly believe he means well here. Kinda like that big dumb dog you had as a kid that you'd throw the ball at and it would just hit him in the head cause he didn't get the game? Then he'd jump and slobber all over you cause he just couldn't contain himself? It's like that - a bit messy, but you feel the oddly misplaced love.

  18. Thank you so much, CAMERON. I didn't think I could comment on this thread without showing intense anger and using a few racial slurs at those who posted before you, but you calmed me down.

For the last couple of years Kanye West's message has been that it is NOT good to hate gay people. He's gone against the anti-gay beliefs of Rap culture (a culture which influences middle-class white boys also). He has spoken out against violent gay-bashing. When he's been accused of being gay by his ignorant peers, he has challenged them rather than going on a homophobic diatribe against gay men to "prove his masculinity".

So, thank you again, CAMERON. You're comment eased my mind...stopped me from spittin' and cussin' on my keyboard.

  19. You guys are so obvious with your fucking double standards that it makes me want to ralph all over your Jeffrey Sanker VIP passes.

What a total bunch of classist snobs.

You hate on every Black person that you get a chance at. Yet, you same Weho/Chelsea trogs drool over every straight white boy who takes his shirt off regardless of whether or not he has ever expressed one word in support of gay people.

TO WHIT: BRODY FUCKING JENNER! You bitchez don't care that Brody has never done anything, but, let Andy post a picture of him shirtless with his board shorts falling off his flat ass and you act like Jesus himself was in the dj booth.

Even the killers and gay bashers on here you fantasize about, you twats leave comments like "he's hot" or "I'd do him".Thank God "The Queen" seems to have fallen to the guillotine. Bore.

Let me tell you something, Kanye West has the potential to do WAY more than some twink on Survivor or ,dare I say , Lance Bass (my personal fave D-List Celeb) to advance our causes. And yet you fucks can't wait to bag on him.

    Shut the fuck up.

I can't figure it out. I refuse to believe you are all just a bunch of knee jerk racists. I am sure you all love your "Big Cock Black Thug" porn when you're high, and I have yet to meet a white guy who didn't confide to me that his fantasy is to be gang banged by a group of black guys (Really? That's SO original.) so, what's your damage Heather?

Are you just such a bunch of old snobs that you don't speak "hip hop"? Or young ones who "don't mind Black guys, I just dont't 'do' them"?

Are you like my dad when we visited Portugal, screaming into peoples' faces, "why don't you understand what I'm saying? I want a cheeseburger! Don't you understand English?!" Learn the language.

I could care less about Kanye, I do know that I am impressed that he bothers to try to expand his vision. Maybe if some of you would actually venture past the Target at San Mo and La Brea you would find out there's a world out there.

You are the one's living in your sad cocktail and "Crunch Fitness" ghettos. Kanye is sitting front row in Paris and meeting and EXPANDING his woldview.

Too many homos sit around in their bubbles like new immigrants in their insular worlds never bothering to leave their comfort zone. You're no better than the old Korean lady whose entire view of America is seen through the Korean tv channel though she lives on Beverly and Hobart right in the middle of L.A.. Your worldview is a dance floor filled with Abercrombies & Bitches who for some reason can't keep their shirts on in a public place. When you do turn on the tv, it's a Logo/Here utopia where no Black people exist, and you're damn skippy with that.

Give the guy a fucking break!

  20. That's so Kanye.

    Posted by: latebrosus | Feb 17, 2009 2:35:38 PM

  21. Thank you CARIBTONY

It is important to remember this is coming from a person from a community that reclaimed a negative word for empowerment reasons. If there is a group that understands the importance of labels, it would be African Americans.

  22. Derek, thank you. Right on.

  23. Let's speak plainly: at least from one who does not sit in front of his tv in an insulated bubble: Kayne comes across as a homophobic piece of shit trying to be cool. Now that's decided, let's move on.

  25. Derek, you used offensive gay stereotypes in your defense of Mr. West using offensive gay stereotypes.

Just thought I'd point that out.
