Bishop T.D. Jakes Speaks Out About Son's Gay Sex Arrest

JakesBishop T.D. Jakes, the homophobic Dallas megachurch pastor whose son was arrested last week after exposing himself and masturbating in front of law enforcement officers during a sex sting in a public park, released a statement over the weekend (which he also read to his congregation) distancing himself from his son's actions by pointing out that Jermaine Jakes is an adult. Bishop Jakes also says that his son is being shown a "restorative grace" indicative of his ministry.

According to the Dallas Voice, Jakes has said that he would never hire a sexually active gay person, has spoken out against same-sex marriage, and has called homosexuality a "brokenness."

Jermaine Jakes turned himself in to police last Thursday on an indecent exposure charge.

As parents, we occasionally feel that our children do not live up to our highest and best ideals. When they do not, we don't diminish our love for them as recompense for our disapproval. Like our children, we also are not infallible nor do we profess to be. Our now adult son Jermaine is 29, but when he was at home he was a recipient of correction, compassion and wise counsel. We hope that the light of what we believe will guide him through times of contradiction and moments of concern as he continues to mature.

In spite of the family pain we feel from this unfortunate situation, it has given us a chance to show him the same help, support, and restorative grace for which our family and church is noted. Through our ministry at The Potter’s House, as well as our own home, we have for years offered help in the time of need to all adults, our five children and other people’s children.

It is in moments like these that I am so grateful that we do not preach that we are the solution, but we look to Christ for resolution. So then, as a very human family with real issues, like many other people, we will draw from the same well of grace to which we have led others to drink and be refreshed.

Bishop T.D. Jakes

  1. Just like celebrities, we prop up preachers as "God-like" and figure that just because they are in the public eye they ought to be PERFECT. In this case, unlike other cases involving some mainstream preachers, the preacher himself did not directly involve himself in wrong doing but instead was the victim of humiliation through a child's act.

While no one can accurately state and rate the level of quality in parenthood the pastor displayed to his child, one can conclude that the actions of the child were WRONG and BROKE THE LAW, thus, the child should be prosecuted.

In this case, I don't think it's either fair or justified to blame the pastor for this incident unless one can properly point to delinquency on his part of being a parent. Coming from a black perspective, this was a black father that seemingly WAS involved in his child's life, which is a great thing to hear compared to the high rate of father-less black households. I come from one of them.

All of the comments above blaming the pastor or shaming the pastor, in my opinion, lack merit unless one can point to a lack of parenting quality that the pastor displayed while raising this individual. If none of you can point to such low quality, the only logical stance to take on this matter is that you had a young adult male that made bad choices on THEIR OWN that resulted in their OWN prosecution. If you break the law you pay the price, no matter WHOSE child you are.

As a side note, being gay or straight has nothing to do with this prosecution. The sexual make-up of the individual was not the basis of his arrest but instead was based mostly on that individual's decision of indecent exposure.

  2. I just love the "agree with what I agree with or else you're a bigot" doctrine. Do you want to see a true bigot? The folks who'd grab you and string you up or shoot up your household are the bigots. The racist cops who teargassed my uncle's house (he was 60 years old and it was the wrong house) and shot him up with his hands in the air (some of his fingers were shot off) in Arkansas were bigots. Because we hold varying opinions about homosexuality, divorce or Christianity does NOT make you or I a bigot.

  3. I agree with the Bishop, mainly on this note in the bible God said homosexuality is an abomonation in his eyesight. And you can not argue with the word of God.

  4. The chickens of his bigotry have come home to roost. Instead of his son finding a life partner, marrying, and having a normal life, Jakes' bigotry has put his son on a closet spiral into anonymous public sex and indecency. This dumb bigot should wake up.

  5. Jakes is just a money grubbing hack. No compassion or mercy. No wonder his son has turned out this way.

  6. Be strong and face the devil, You already won this battle, I don't care what ever type of antichrist designed by devil can say. The only thing is that, the fire is hot enough for them. I silence them right now in the Name of JESUS CHRIST. I encourage you(mom & dad), always trust in the LORD.

  7. Well i read a few comments by others castigating TD JAKES and the church. its good for all men to know that while parents must do all they can to mold their children up in the right way every child still has a choice in the long run. do you remember Lucifer who is now the devil or Jesus Christ and Judas. If you point a hand at someone someday others will point at you. Good children have evolved from very dysfunctional homes. Why is that? its choice.Judas and peter along with other diciplrs of Jesus were tempted equally to go the wrong way but Judas fell flat so did lucifer(now devil) fall from heaven without the kind of temptations and conditions on earth today. Adam and Eve fell from bliss because they were not content with all they had (the whole earth). dont blame nobody juct as God would act. Extend a hand of love and grace as JESUS did to Mary magdalene, Zacheus, the dieing thief on the cross, saul who became paul etc. A thief yesterday or today may become a saint tommorow. Adiues!

  9. A lot of these comments are so sad to read, as it shows the despair so many of these people are in. The commenters who so vengefully attacked Mr. Jakes over how he handled the issue with his son seem to have so much resentment and anger toward anything remotely connected to God and what's morally right. Sadly, that's testimony to where they're at in their own lives. Everyone's going to be accountable for their own actions, but bottom line is, God gave us commandments to live by and there's no distorting or getting away from that. Just because a person chooses to live their life immorally, they can't twist things around to make that immoral practice alright. I fear where our society is headed with all of the misguidance out there about what's okay to do. We better line our lives up with how God has told us how to live.

  11. how is this man just gay and let him live his life?He was masterbating in a public park in front of undercover officers. The man is nothing short of a very sick minded perverted person!!!

  12. This is a private matter that should be handled privately. All of us as parents only hope our children make good choices. However we are not responsible for the choices they make. God bless them and give them wisdom as they handle this private matter.

  13. how sad that the average person has deceived themselves into thinking that God changes His mind and now will accept homosexuality. the fact remains that God is the same yesterday, today and forever. His laws don't change. Homosexuality IS A SIN! if td jakes allows this MAN to live under his roof, he may create more havoc in the family. this young man knows the gospel and is being fooled by the DEVIL.

  15. Wonderful statement by Bishop T.D. Jakes.

I was actually trying to locate an article about this situation and was led to this site.

I find it interesting how so many homosexuals and their supporters on the comment section of this site accuse Jakes of hatred and bigotry, then express some of the most intense hatred imaginable.

This is clear hypocrisy on their part. Indeed the bigotry and lack of compassion suit the want to put on Jakes, is actually tailor made for them! LoL.

Jakes' loving, forgiving, prayerful, corrective and restorative approach is exactly what the Word of The Lord calls for.

May the power of the Holy Spirit break the chains of sin in the life of Jakes' son...with the loving arms of God waiting for his son's return...with God's help.

  16. You know....in Japan by far most hypocrites, pedophiles, and so on are at least nominally Buddhist because that's the dominant faith in Japan.

In Arab countries most hypocrites, rapist, pedophiles, and so on are at least nominally Muslim because that's the dominant faith.

In Israel most people guilty of bad behavior are at least nominally Jewish, because that's the dominant faith.

In some societies and sub-cultures where atheists and agnostics are numerous, you'll corresponding find many people nominally agnostic or atheist guilty of bad behavior.

In North America and Europe where Christianity is the dominant faith(s), you'll find most guilty of bad behavior are nominally Christian.

  19. Dear Bishop Jakes, I read the article regarding your son. I offer you my encouragement, love, and may your faith continue to grow by things of this nature in abundance. (We know that this is a satanic attack). I especially appreciate your statement "In spite of the family pain we feel from this situation, it has given us a chance to show him the same help, support, and restorative grace for which, our family and church is noted." And you went on to state, "It is in moments like these that I am so grateful that we do not preach that we are the solution, but we look to CHRIST for solution." Yes, Bishop keep on drawing from the same WELL of GRACE to which you have led sooooooooo many, many others to drink and be refreshed. God bless you, your son, your entire family, and your congregation of which you are shepherd is my personal prayer for all of you and all of us(the entire world). Keep your head up, do not stop teaching us the actual facts/commands of GOD'S WORD, we need it more today, than on yesterday.

  20. Yes Bishop Jakes please continue to preach the Bible’s holy word:

Leviticus 19:20 = " 'If a man sleeps with a woman who is a slave girl promised to another man but who has not been ransomed or given her freedom, there must be due punishment. Yet they are not to be put to death, because she had not been freed.

Leviticus 25:44 = " 'Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.

Ephesians 6:5 = Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.

Colossians 3:22 = Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord.

1 Timothy 6:1 = All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God's name and our teaching may not be slandered.

Titus 2:9 = Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them,

1 Peter 2:18 = Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.

  21. The Bible says, "Touch not my anointed and do my prophet no harm." Like it or not, TD Jakes is believed to be a prophet of God. If he speaks what the Bible speaks and stands on the Bible, you can disagree if you like, but it is what it is.

One of the reasons this world is in the shape it is in is because we go to great lengths to justify our sins. We often know things we do are not right, but we will make up an excuse to place us in the clear. If everything we did was right, Jesus would not have had to go to the cross for our sins.

You all keep talking about how God is love and kind and gracious, and He is. If God love you, the LGBT community, are you so narrow minded to think that God does not love those who differ from you? You often speak about people not being tolerant of you and wanting everyone to accept you, but do you tolerate others and accept them?

  23. Maybe the lad wasn't exposing himself as much as he was the rebellion against his upbringing. He is an adult, and he knew the risks of what he was doing in public. I don't much care for his father's interpretation; I would like to hear his son's deeper thoughts on who he really is and what he wants.

  25. My heart goes to you Bishop Jakes. it is only those who have never had kids that will castigate you in this manner.Am a parent and i know that you can not follow your kids to every where they go to, neither can you make hundred percent decisions for them especially when they are grown ups. The enemy (satan) is only trying to taint your testimony. Keep praying and loving your son just as christ loves and forgives us despite our house load of sins. God bless you and your family.
