Sally Kern Calls for Anti-Gay ‘Great Awakening’

The Oklahoma Gazette reports on the “Clouds Over America” conference of the John Birch Society in Oklahoma, at which gun-toting Oklahoma legislator and homophobe Sally Kern “called for a new ‘Great Awakening,’ referring to a period of religious revivals from the 18th century considered precursor to the American Revolution.”

Kern_2Kern laid out various points of a “homosexual agenda” in which gays would ultimately triumph by convincing the world that homosexuality is a “superior lifestyle.”

Said Kern to choruses of “amens”: “You know, I’ve done a lot of reading on this. I wish I could describe to you their behavior. I will not because I would be redder than this suit. It’s their behavior that we oppose. The theme of equality and freedom is the approach that the homosexuals are using today — totally perverting the true intention of what our Constitution meant. The homosexuals get it — it’s a struggle between our religious freedoms and their right to do what they want to do…The solution is another Great Awakening, folks. We need a spiritual revival, and that will only come if God’s people, especially you pastors, will stand in your pulpits and vocally preach the word of God and thus declare the Lord this sin, and preach it in love, only then does our nation have a chance of overcoming the scourge of AIDS, HIV and the devastating destruction that the homosexual lifestyle is bringing on your children and our grandchildren.”

God help us all.

If that bitch isn’t our call to action, I don’t know what is. Hitler anyone? Seriously, this kind of shit isn’t a joke, Oklahoma or not. These kinds of people destroy nations.

  2. says

You know what? We don’t need any help, from God or anyone else, when it comes to this woman.

No one, and I mean NO ONE, listens to this bitch unless they have already fully subscribed to her bigoted ideology. She’s not convincing anyone of anything… she’s just preaching to the already-bigoted choir, telling them what they want to hear.

Seems like Mrs. Kern has turned into a one-note act these days… but I guess when all you have is a hammer, everything ends up looking like a nail.

  3. says

I’m way behind on my “devastating destruction” quota for 2009. I have been too busy cooking for my Mother, doing home improvement projects, and working- you know, the sort of things the vast majority of homosexuals do every day.

  4. Ed says

As Sinclair Lewis once said, “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”
This woman and people like her are dangerous. Extremely dangerous.

  5. says

Keep at it, Sally! If she’s indicative of the direction of conservatives in this country, then the “Great Awakening” will be the “Great Death Knell” for their movement. Her kind of living-in-the-past desperation is a last-gasp attempt to hold onto all the rubbish she feels slipping out of her hateful grasp. So keep blabbing, Sally, you might bring some more people over to our side.

  6. Mark in NYC says

So that’s what all the hatred is based on; envy? She hates and fears gays because of our supposed “superior lifestyle”?

Girl could use a few therapy sessions…and a new stylist.

  7. GayRepublican says

I’m not really sure that this woman is that dangerous. Maybe 20 years ago she would’ve been, but today her nuttiness just helps our side. Yes, she must be challenged, but I think it’s safe to also laugh at her.

Oh, and Sally, if you happen to ever read these comments (and your ego is so big that I’m sure you read stuff posted about you on the net) , as a Christian who also happens to be gay, let me just say, FUCK YOU, BITCH.

  8. JerzeeMike says

The beauty of people like Ms. Kern is they actually do more harm to their own cause than anything else. Ms. Kern and her followers will get all whipped up and put great efforts into antigay policies that will ultimately fail because Americans by and large do not subscribe to fanaticism. The population of the U.S. is not homogenous enough to support their rhetoric beyond their current base and the fact that the youth of America finds this sort of thing distasteful ensures their ultimate demise.

  9. says

But I do lead a “superior lifestyle.”

Becuse for me, the only options I have are the life of an openly gay man or the life of a closeted gay man. I don’t think that sexual orientation is accurately described as a “lifestyle,” but the choice to be closeted or out certainly is. And yes, “out” is “superior.” I said it.

Sally should consider coming out of the closet herself. It’s dark and scary in there.

  10. says

Until the media stops swarming around people like her, Rush Limbaugh, Joe Wurzlebacher, etc… screaming for soundbites, it’s just going to keep rolling. And you never hear these people publicly called out; all you hear is just how much they have a support base.

Like tuning into Nancy Grace’s idea of BREAKING NEWS to find out what Kaylee’s mother said this morning while she was taking a crap in jail. There IS an audience for all this garbage.

  11. Disgusted American says

I say let Ms Kerns and those Like her – have thier own state…”wall it up”..and keep her kind IN, and the SANE people from Entering! Lets give her OklahomO…or say N.Dakota…let them live together and kill each other!

  12. bryanD says

Oh Sally, the great awakening is the world finally realizing that religious zealots like her and so many others are responsible for more deaths, more cruelty, more oppression than any other force in this world. Sally’s a religious terrorist and should be treated as such.

  13. GayRepublican says

Disgusted american, as great as that fantasy sounds, just imagine the poor gay kids born into such a situation. I wouldn’t wish that on anybody. Kind of ruins the fantasy.

  14. Sportin' Life says

False history. The idea that the first Great Awakening was some sort of “precursor” to the American Revolution is pure propaganda. Voltaire and Diderot, Deism, anti-clericalism, revolt against the “Divine Right of Kings”–the revolutionary age was secular and rather anti-religious, in fact.

At long last, we have a full-fledged fascist movement in the US. It’s time to stop pretending that we don’t. The Sally Kerns of the world shouldn’t be mocked or made fun of any longer, because they’re dangerous. They need to be politically destroyed.

  15. Mercurys Wings says

I think Kern is fringe, but I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss the reach xenophobic talk. Remember the McCain-Palin rallies… xenophobic talk just agitates those crazy neocon religious zealots who think liberals and progressives are trying to pervert them and “their America.”

The economy’s in terrible shape. Middle America is really hurting. Religious zealotry is up and more political than ever. Our right have already been stripped/denied in many states.

If CA taught us one thing, it was not to get caught sleeping. The Christian coalition is using our backs as a big step ladder.

  16. Yuk says

She’s read BOOKS? Is reading a book the same thing as getting it from the horses mouth (ie actually finding a gay person and having a civil conversation with them?)

This person is a zealot and (thank god) pretty extreme for this day and age.

I can’t help but wonder how many people in this church have been forced to stay in the closet because of their (parent’s) church’s bigoted ideology??!!

  17. todd says

    what a cuntbag!
has she turned on the tv lately to see what horrible things heterosexuals are doing???
    Prisons are full on heterosexuals?!
divorce courts are full of heterosexuals?!
the news is full of heterosexuals doing terrible things?!
sexual orientation has nothing to do with ALL THAT?!

  18. says

Kirk and Madsen, folks. It’s what the wackos rely on when they talk about the “gay agenda.”

And in fact, that assimilationist agenda finds eerie echoes here every time somebody complains about transgender folks or drag or leather or anything that doesn’t work with a white picket fence.

  19. PM says

    Creepy lady is creepy.

Some people are just so strange – also sad, demented, horrifying…
Thank goodness ancient is on that list too !
Mother Nature ; I could kiss you – if you were just, you know, a guy.

    Sportin’ Life is correct.
It was great men like Founding Father Thomas Paine, who was a deist that inspired our forefathers to sacrifice their lives in the American Revolution. You can find more info here: http://www.ushistory.org/paine .
I am also a deist and Ms Kern will have to put a bullet in my head before I would ever pray to her hateful false god.

  21. Jay Original says

What’s funny is that the last Great Awakening in the United States called for equality of ALL PEOPLE under the eyes of God regardless of race, gender, class, etc. It was a huge determining factor in the abolitionist movement, the women’s suffrage movement, and galvanized a lot of African Americans to believe that they were more than just the cursed “Children of Ham”. Ignorant Christians are the best!

  22. says

One of these days, some LGBT person who has lost a child, home, spouse, pension, and/or job to federal inequality will put a bullet through the heads of people like Sally Kern, Mike Huckabee, Rick Warren, etc,. and others who are obsessed with EXCLUDING our families from U.S. law. ALL of the above horrors have already happened to many due to marriage inequality alone. Why isn’t this HATE against our family seen as the VIOLENCE that it really is? Cause and Effect. Laws have consequences. So does hate. THE AGE OF THE SISSY IS OVER. Haters will need to take responsibility for the suffering THEY create. [equality tax revolt]

  23. mike says

Don’t anyone here dismiss Ms. Kern outright. She might seem passe, but I tell you she has MILLIONS of fans out there. Those people who got all excited about Sarah Palin are the same people who would, and do, listen to Sally Kern–with righteous anger and religious fervor in their hearts. Wing-nut talk radio (Rush, Sean, Laura, Glenn and others) has given her nothing but praise, for Chrissake! I think we all need a reality check. The biggest threat in the minds of these people isn’t terrorism, the stock market, losing their jobs, or a natural catastrophe like Hurricane Katrina. No, their biggest fear is that gays and lesbians will be accepted as equal participants in American civil society. They will kill to prevent this from happening.

  24. TANK says

It’s a filthy, crude job dealing with this trash. It’s not fun and requires no imagination or intellect to send these memes packing and disprove these lies. Beat these people back into their trailers…back to their cheap booze, meth and domestic violence.

  25. Jen says

Some people rant about and vehemently condemn the very thing they are hiding or struggle with. Would be interesting to delve into her past or be a fly on her wall in those quiet moments.

  26. mwf says

    “….their behavior….”

Apparently she doesn’t know many heterosexuals.

They are by far THE WORST.

One that immediately comes to mind is the senseless beating and murder of one’s own child.

Don’t know about you, but I don’t know of ANY gay person that has beaten or murdered their own child.

  27. RP says

“it’s a struggle between our religious freedoms and their right to do what they want to do”

She is right; in that, it is her religious right to believe in a mythical magical man in the sky and our right to FREEDOM!

Also, why has she “done a lot of reading on [homosexuality]”? I don’t think everyone that is a homophobe is a closet case… just those who are obsessed with it (especialy gun-toting dykes with Indigo Girls hair from Oklahoma).

  28. Bob R says

Don’t take this woman and her followers/supporters lightly. There are millions like her in every town and city this country. Just recently it was reported that 55% of the Republican party would like the party to be more like Sarah Palin. We saw very clearly the type of crowds Palin drew her rallies. The shouts of “kill Obama” and “he’s not like us” were loud and clear. Hate strikes a very loud drumbeat. Palin, Kern, Rick Warren, James Dobson, Pat Robertson to name a few, plus more than a few members of Congress agree with much of what Kern says, although perhaps not so openly. More and more Kern clones are running for local public office and school boards. Kern, at least is visible. You can see her coming. The danger lies with those who silently nod in agreement or quietly whisper “amen”, or send their financial support to right wing organizations. I hope no one doubts for a minute that if they could, these folks would be more than willing to rid America of what they perceive as the homosexual menace. We’re the key that unlocks the door a widespread purging of America. If the homosexual can be controlled, then it’s easier to get rid of the liberal intellectuals, the non-Christians, the people of color, etc. Kern and her “Christian soldiers” cannot be reasoned with they must be confronted, exposed and ridiculed at every opportunity. This woman and her followers would have no qualms about imprisoning or executing gay folks if they could get away with it. Oh, and you Log Cabinettes out there, don’t think you’ll get off because you’re a member of the party. The best you can hope for is a few weeks as a Capo.

I agree with those who find this very alarming. It looks increasingly possible that we are heading into the 1930s/Great Depression 2.0. That level of mass hardship and social dislocation was what lead directly to the rise of Fascism globally in the 1930s. People whose lives and worlds are crumbling, are angry and looking for scapegoats, and they become very open to these kinds of messages. Before the third Reich, Germany had been the birthplace of gay rights in the 1880s, and by the time of the Weimar Republic was in many ways more open, advanced, and tolerant of gay people than America is today . And a few short years later under Hitler they were shipping us off to the camps along with the Jews and the Gypsies. This a also why I find the vicious anti-gay statements of the ex-Hitler-youth Pope alarming .
And why I find it alarming Obama doesn’t say much about us, or take the time and political risk to publicly differentiate his views from Rick Warren et al.

Who is it OK to hate? Who is most politically vulnerable? Who is expendable?

  30. clint says

This is nothing new for Oklahoma, either the bigotry or the blatant misreading of history. She’ll keep getting elected, unfortunately. I’m just glad I don’t live in her district.

  31. gwyneth cornrow says

Hank, your comments are spot on. I’d love to know if the religious revivals Kern is citing in fact had anything to do with the American revolution. I thought the revolution in the US had to do with unfair taxation.
But religious revivals were very popular during the Great Depression. There were a lot of religious hucksters around then.

  32. bill says

The saddest part of these folks is that they do not look us as human or ‘normal’ like they are ‘normal.’ They see sex and sexuality, not love, kindness, normalcy in other aspects. I work with a fellow whose son is gay, his fixation is on butt fucking. His kids as well as him are all on medication. All mental messes!
