Elaine Donnelly Steps Up Crusade Against Gays in the Military

Elaine Donnelly of the anti-gay Center for Military Readiness (you may remember reading about her testimony at last July's hearings before the House Armed Services Committee) has rounded up a group of 1,000 anti-gay retired military officers to get behind her bigoted crusade.

Donnelly The AP reports: "A statement issued by the retired officers Tuesday said passage of that bill 'would undermine recruiting and retention, impact leadership at all levels, have adverse effects on the willingness of parents who lend their sons and daughters to military service, and eventually break the All-Volunteer Force.' Among the signatories were Gen. Carl E. Mundy, Jr., a former commandant of the Marine Corps; Adm. Leighton W. Smith, a former commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe; Gen. Charles A. Horner, who commanded U.S. aerial forces during the 1990-91 Gulf War; and Adm. Jerome L. Johnson, a former vice chief of Naval Operations. The retired officers said they strongly supported the principle that 'homosexuality is incompatible with military service' and warned that repeal of current law could jeopardize morale and 'unit cohesion.'"

Both Servicemember's Legal Defense Fund (SLDN) executive director Aubrey Sarvis and Unfriendly Fire author Nathaniel Frank criticized Donnelly.

Said Sarvis: "The signers of this petition are mired in the fears and politics of the past. More than 75 percent of the American public, including most younger service members as well as many active duty flag officers, realize the question is not if 'don't ask, don't tell' is repealed, but when and how."

You may remember Donnelly held a secret strategy meeting last October in Washington DC with Veterans Service Organizations which was busted by PFLAG after they intercepted a letter from Donnelly to the VSOs. It appears this is what has come of that meeting.

PFLAG's Steve Ralls wrote then in the Huffington Post: "Thursday's briefing in Washington is a last-minute, last-ditch effort by Donnelly to try and curry some small measure of influence on Capitol Hill. To do so, she is likely to give VSO leaders misinformation, as she has done with the press and the public, in order to mislead them on the issue and attempt to win them over to her side. As polls of military personnel show that young service members and veterans are overwhelmingly comfortable and ready to serve with gay colleagues, she is attempting to reach out to the older, more conservative VSO membership to try and rally support for her cause."

Watch former Army officer Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Penn) grill and chastise Donnelly at the hearings last July, AFTER THE JUMP...

  2. What IS this dried-up old cunt's problem?

The world is falling down around everyone's ears, and all SHE cares about is that somewhere, fags and dykes are drawing breath and not being executed for the crime of existing.

Fucking whore is just mad that her pussy is so nasty that not even Rush Limpdick would tap it.

  3. man, she dumb as hell. so she must really think every gay person out there is going to band together and attack someone.

i wonder if she could name more stories like that. maybe she could, but i know damn well there are plenty of women who have been sexually assaulted by men in the army, etc. guess we shouldn't have troops that are men? or maybe we shouldn't have women? would love to know her take on that.

  6. I would love to see her prosecuted for undermining the military and the security of this country.

At a time when the military desperately needs qualified individuals, she is preventing that from happening. She's sabotaging our nation to fulfill her own sick biases.

It's alright with this anti-American scum if the military has to scavenge through prison populations and recruit drug addicts and violent offenders to fill their ranks, because that's what suits her preferences.

She's also actively denying civil rights to millions of law abiding Americans. Do we need to file a class action lawsuit against this woman?

  7. It is only a matter of time until DADT is repealed. I do not believe that Obama is stepping up to make good on his promise and he is beginning to get a little taste of what Clinton received when he tried. It was the first campaign promise he back peddled on, or the second, as he sets about "studying" the situation again!

However, regardless of polls, studies and public opinion, did anyone here really believe that the country would allow DADT to just be dismissed without a fight? Is there anyone here that didn't see people like Donnelly coming? We are facing an uphill battle that includes a president that now has too many issues like removing private business CEO's to take up our cause.

  8. Obama doesn't have to "take up our cause" our State Representatives do. They are the ones who will write the bill, not Obama. The only thing he will have to do is sign it, once the legislation is passed. So, if you want the repeal of DADT then stop worrying about Obama, and start putting pressure on your Senators and Congressmen...they are the ones who are ultimately responsible for the long over due repeal of this discriminatory and useless policy.

Yes, it would be nice if Obama at least gave some lip service and showed a little support...but I'm not going to hold my breath.

  9. The fears of Nathaniel Frank and others, including myself, have come true: Obama's inexplicable and indefensible refusal to immediately and publicly frame the narrative for repeal of DADT has allowed the ruthless enemies of equality to plant their fascist flag in an abandoned battlefield. Make no mistake: Congress will never seriously consider DADT repeal without Obama's personally lobbying for it as he has other issues.

It's not surprising to see this assault’s design knitted together by the Antigay Industry’s own Madame Defarge, nor her charge led by the apparently still venomous and virulently homophobic Carl Mundy. As Commandant of the Marines in 1993, Mundy matched Colin Powell’s insubordinate deviousness with more direct action, distributing countless copies of the notoriously homohating, semi-pornographic video “The Gay Agenda” throughout the Pentagon. Pray his VCR isn’t warming up again.

Mundy comes from a long line of shameless Marine bigots. When racial integration of the services was being debated in the ‘40s, Marine Commandant Thomas Holcomb declared, “If it were a question of having a Marine Corps of 5,000 whites or 250,000 Negroes, I would rather have the whites.”

Within months of helping force Clinton to surrender with his barrage of gay terrorist tapes, Mundy was forced to apologize for remarks on “60 Minutes” suggesting that black Marines were inherently inferior to their white peers. He claimed his comments were edited out of context but offers no such disclaimer for recycling his rancid homophobia and willful ignorance.

Continuing to ban out gays from the military is not the only poisonous personal prejudice he’s attempted to paint over with his perception of what “American society” wants. In 1992, he said “I do not believe the American people want [women in combat because combat is] debasing”—a similar, persistent obsession of Madame Defarge er Donnelly—proving once again that the root of homophobia is ancient sexism and atrophied gender role expectations.

Admirers of Mundy frequently quote his well-worn Marine “Core Values” speech:

“At the foundation of our core value system is honor. A person cannot be a Marine without honor. It's the bedrock of our character. Honor is integrity, honesty, and responsibility. It's the quality that guides Marines to exemplify ethical and moral behavior; never to lie, cheat, or steal; to abide by an uncompromising code of integrity; to respect human dignity; and to have respect and concern for each other.
We subscribe to a creed that an individual is entitled to be judged on his or her merit as a Marine . . . . The Corps cannot foster or tolerate discrimination . . . or any other form of mean-spirited behavior.”

By his own definitions, by his actions in 1993 and today, by his continuing to defend a policy that forces gay Marines to lie, that discriminates against them regardless of their merit, Carl Mundy has tarnished the very service and servicemembers he prides himself on honoring and loving.

One can only hope that he one day realizes the difference. And that our Commander in Chief will cease being Missing in Action.

  10. It would be interesting to find if all 1000 of these names are knowing signatories to the letter. My guess would be some are not. Do we even know if all 1000 are still alive?

  13. I see Elaine Donnelly on this, and other blog, quite often. She's always testifying or speaking against gays in the military. I always wondered why?
Before I commented, I wanted to look up some information on her.
She's never been a member of the military. No college degree is listed, just appointments under Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II. Married with 2 daughters. Her Military Readiness group is a group consisiting of her, the husband, and someone else.
I think it speaks VOLUMES that the one person so vocal about all this is a person who has NEVER been in the military or knows what military unit cohesian and cohabitation is. She speaks her opinion, but it's an outside of the military opinion.

Maybe someone should look into why she's so against gays in the military: did one of her daughters join the military, then come out? Did her first love go off to war and come back openly gay? Does she blame gay military servicepeople for something that happened in her own life? One has to wonder.

  17. Let's get real. Narcissists think they have a right to punish you just for being the way you are. Think, don't you have the right to be the way you are? Do you have to be some character in the narcissist's fiction that conforms to his or her specifications?

Does that make any sense? That's as hateful as the crime against humanity of attacking people just for being a certain KIND or nationality.
I don't care how "threatened" any of that makes the poor, twisted narcissist feel. His/Her perverted feelings are HIS/HER problem, not yours. Like Osama bin Wanton, he/she will never run out of twisted excuses to irrationalize his attacks on you, so get off the guilt trip. His/Her perversity is not YOUR vice.

In some cases, the narcissist has stolen something of value from you, like your job or reputation or personal welfare or health - something you definitely have every right to get back from that monster.

  18. When are they going to learn their civics that this country was founded as a DEMOCRACY not a theocracy? The GOD er GOP needs to wake up or they will go the way of the Federalists and Whigs!

They haven't learned anything from the Middle East where countries are run IAW their religion.

What these people really want is to run the U.S. as a theocracy. What they don't understand is you can not "cherry pick" the Bible to fulfill you prejudices in a theocracy. The Bible states that a woman should not have power over man, and that she should not speak unless spoken too. Sounds like the Middle East to me!

Wonder if anyone has told Donnelly or other extreme conservative women that!

  19. @Rick: I agree, I noticed that too in the video. According to his bio at Wikipedia, he held a rank of Captain and used to teach at West Point before deploying to Iraq. So he was indeed an officer.

And why shouldn't we? We certainly have more than one casus belli.

Oh yeah, I forgot, it's against the law. But that's the only reason. The only one.
