Crab roadNew study reveals crabs can feel pain, and they retain a memory of it: "Scientists made the discovery by submitting hermit crabs to small electric shocks. They say it has important implications for crustacean welfare in the food industry. The researchers delivered electric shocks to wires attached to the shells of hermit crabs. Only crabs that received shocks vacated their shells during the experiment, indicating that what they had experienced was unpleasant. With less powerful shocks, below the threshold that forced them out, crabs remained in their shells but appeared to be waiting for an opportunity to move. When a new shell was offered to them, they were more likely to switch homes than crabs that had not received a shock. This suggested that the crabs retained a memory of the pain they had felt earlier, said the scientists."

  3. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST OF THE ANDES!!!!! Jacob Whipple read WIMPle is RETARDED!

What has suddenly transformed him from someone who gets that the homoHATRED of the Mormon Church must be consistently PUBLICLY CONDEMNED for the BIGOTRY it is into a impotent pansy armed only with gardening tools to "show" Mormons how much we deserve equality???? Is he being blackmailed. Is he from a Mormon family that have threatened to disown him, bar him from the next string bean casserole feed, if he doesn't stop?

ATTENTION: leaders and rank and file of the Mormon Church are PROFESSIONAL gay haters who align their salvation with stopping our equality any way they can. You could heal their sick and raise their dead right in front of their smilefucking eyes and they would still say anything, do anything, spend any amount of money to keep you a subhuman in terms of civil rights.

  6. That story about solar storms destroying the world seemed extremely alarmist. The whole thing was about how long it would take everyone to die and there were two paragraphs about what could be done.

I can't help but wonder if this is just a gimic viral pr stunt for that upcoming 2012 disaster movie. That story wasn't even listed on Nasa.gov when I searched for it.

    Thoughts anyone?

  13. Sigh, the British press *love* these "even fish feel pain" stories. For the record, that study is a shamefully sloppy bit of behavioral science and provides no evidence at all that crabs feel pain - a complex psychological subjective state. Rather, it shows that they are capable of behavioral responses to nociception, which is the perception of aversive stimuli, and any idiot with a little of knowledge of animal behavior would have predicted that.

Again, pain and nociception are not the same thing, and you need more brains to do the first than the second. Any study like the one linked that doesn't address that issue is lousy science, and unfortunately, there's a lot of that coming, especially from labs in the UK for whatever reason.

  14. I don't know why the e.o. wilsonites are taken seriously anymore...lasting impact on the biological sciences and psychology, for some reason. No, ants aren't people, and pain is a subjective mental state...which has its own problems...like epiphenomenal dualism.

  15. I guess I'll have to give up eating hermit crabs. I hope nobody does these studies on lobsters, blue crabs, or king crabs!

  16. Yeah, the LDS Church is a dangerous cult all right. Do you realize their members offer 10% of all of their income to help the poor and needy - and to build meetinghouses where their members are taught to serve other people and to keep the laws of God? They actually spend their time visiting the sick and those who have special needs...those ANIMALS! And when certain fringe groups accuse them of being homophobic because they want to preserve traditional marriage, they turn the other cheek and take it. When these groups protest their sacred places, vandalize their buildings, threaten lives of their members - they are so dangerous that they - they ask them nicely to stop! Those cruel beasts! Man! What a dangerous cult!

  17. Agreed. IF you look at their so called social welfare program, it only helps mormons, and it is at the discretion of mormons to determine who is in need.
