  3. Well, that'll be two states with very handsome governors: California to come and Massachusettes already.

Shallow? Ask me do I care....they're gorgeous.

  4. Yea! I knew he was planning a run. I recently heard him speak in West Palm Beach, and he is just wonderful. Best of luck to Mayor Newsom and to California. I will be rooting for you.

  6. It's about time he announced it!
Thinking about what he can do for my home state makes me tear up a little,
    I'm definitely happy.
    He made my day.

  7. Newsom's not perfect anymore than any of us. But there's no better evidence of his sincerity than the fact that he keeps defending marriage equality even after it made him a pariah in his own party [did you see him on the Convention platform last summer? No!] and may cost him the governorship [and nearly cost him his life—over 1400 death threats in 2004 alone].

Young but not too young, handsome, sexy, charismatic, a born speaker, smart, able to talk ad lib in detail about any issue ... I am certain of nothing more than that the Democrats would already be grooming him to be their 2016 Presidential candidate if they weren't such cowards about marriage equality.

  8. How did Susan Powter put it? "Stop the Insanity."

The man can't run a city, let alone the largest state in the union. All the fawning over his looks is pathetic.

  9. Awww, now I wish I was still living in CA! Oh, well, I suppose I'll just busy myself preparing for the inevitable fight for marriage equality in NJ. Good luck, Mr. Newsom!

  10. So that must mean that DieFi must have decided not to run? Gavin has been an amazing mayor and would make an incredible gov. Bravo.

  11. I do not think marriage equality will kill his campaign. His handling of dumping criminals to San Bernardino County and the sloppy sanctuary city policy that allowed a repeat offender who is an illegal immigrant to murder a father and his two sons.

Republicans are going to have a field day with this if he becomes a front runner. Gavin needs to save his money and run for the 8th State Senate District instead when Yeland Yee is termed out.

  12. please, no.

  13. "All the fawning over his looks is pathetic. "

A good laxative will help...unless you've been messin' with some Iranian glue.

  14. I made a funny about murdered gay Iraqis. Ain't I cute?

  15. I see the hags are out early, sharpening their fangs.

So he's telegenic, big whup. I am sure both Democrats in San Bernadino County will vote for him.

I think he is as electable as Jerry or Villaraigosa. The rabid xenophobes don't vote Democrat anyhow. I don't agree with him on all issues (including immigration), but he's not afraid to take a stand and he is a friend to our community.

Whoever the Dems nominate will likely prevail against a weak, divided, GOP who keep running ideologues who lose statewide races.

Witness their recent war over the last budget and general hatred of Ahhnold.

Whoever becomes governor will inherit a mess and could no worse than "how hard could this be, I bankrupted a restaraunt" Ahhnold.

  16. "I made a funny about murdered gay Iraqis. Ain't I cute?"

Yeah, real pathetic. You sound like someone who really cares about gays of color--like a real Log Cabinite.

  17. Good luck to him. Sounds like an interesting primary. From what I've read, I'm hoping Loretta Sanchez runs, as I think she's more of a coalition builder than Newsom could ever hope to be. I really don't see the Dems choosing him, but 2 years ago I never thought Obama would be president!

  18. Is Derrick from Philly schizophrenic? He wrote an abhorant comment about the gay Iraquis being killed, and is now bashing himself about it.

Truly Towleroad gets curiouser and curiouser.

  20. As a San Franciscan, all I can say is: please, go away.

    Posted by: Brad | Apr 21, 2009 8:40:31 PM

  21. As a San Franciscan, THANK YOU, Gavin, for being our mayor and advancing not just LGBT equality, but green initiatives, health insurance, and creating housing for thousands of homeless.

For doing this while swimming through a constant river of mud as evidence by Ms. Brad above. You've been called every name this side of the AntiChrist but the proof of your popularity among the majority of San Franciscans and the hollowness of your ruthless opponents is that they couldn't even come up with a serious candidate to run against you for reelection, while your original opponent, who apparently lied then to the press about his financial security growing up, chose to help America by becoming Ralph Nader's running mate in 2008.

  22. Gavin Newsom = Twatter

  23. Finally! It's about time that someone is running for governor on Twitter. Twitter has needed a governor for so long now!

When I read the headline, I wondered if Gavin Newsom Announced He's Running for Governor on Twitter or if Gavin Newsom Announced On Twitter That He's Running For Governor of California.

  24. Newsom hasn't got the chance of a rat in a pit full of snakes. The Bay Area isn't popular in the rest of the state to begin with and you have to add to that his history with gay marriage (a loser also outside the Bay Area). Furthermore, I'd say he has even lost a lot of his popularity in San Francisco because he has been running around campaigning while the city was misgoverned. I doubt he could be re-elected mayor again (if he could run).

Then consider the various scandals--messing around with a subordinate's wife, his divorce, his new wife caught drinking with him when under age (21). Most of this stuff would have ended his political career anywhere but SF. But he's pro-gay. Yay.

  25. Gavin Newsom has a chance if a) Dianne Feinstein doesn't run and b) the California Republicans continue their long tradition of nominating unelectable candidates from the wackier, Limbaugh-infested fringes of the right. (Arnie only got in because he didn't have to run in a primary - the guy they ran the year before lost by something like 10 points to Gray Davis. GRAY DAVIS.)
